This family claimed to be descended from George, "lawfully descended of Owen Perrot being the third brother of the house of Perrot in Pembrokeshire" (Woodcock 1984). This Owen has been mistakenly identified as Sir Owen Perrot of Pembrokeshire. Such a relationship is not possible, as it would require the grandfather and grandson to be the same age (Perrot 1988). Thus this line is more likely descended from the Perrots of Woodstock, founded by descendants of Thomas Perrot (Turvey 1990).

The main branch in Northleigh descended from Simon, son of Robert, and had its property on a hill overlooking Northleigh. This family became known as the 'Hill Perrots'. A second Perrot family in Northleigh was founded by James Perrot, and lived west of the church. These were the 'Parsonage Perrots.' (Barnwell, 1867).

The Hill Perrots became intimately intertwined with the various colleges of Oxford University. Among these was Robert Perrot (No. 2 below). Robert's line is also supposed to have given rise to the Perrot baronets, though supporting evidence is not available.

  • 1. George Perrot of Haroldston/Haverfordwest was born in Yorkshire.

General Notes: Claimed to be the 3rd on of Sir Owen Perrot of Pembrokeshire, by both the Herald and Sir John Perot; but this is not possible, given they were contemporaries. More likely he was son of John from Haverfordwest, 2nd cousin to Sir Owen (Turvey, 1990).

"There is no evidence to support George's claim to be descended from Owen Perrot, and the description of Owen as the third brother of the Perrot family, is certainly erroneous. However, this lack of evidence need not disqualify George claiming descdnt from the Haroldston branch. In terms of chronology and his original residence in Haverfordwest, George may well have been a cousin of Sir Owen, but he was certainly not descended from his near contemporary. It may be ventured that George may have been the son of John Perrot of the Woodstock line, and as a result, a secon cousin of Sir Owen and third in descent of the Haroldston line." (Turvey, 1990).

As to John Perrot of the Woodstock line, Turvey (1990) writes: "This cade branch, the Perrots of Woodstock, .... was founded in the 1460's by John, the youngest son of Sir Thomas Perrot (c. 1398-1461) of Haroldston near Haverford West. Although largely ignored by both historians and genealogists, the Revd. E.L. Barnwell does briefly note John and his immediate successors. John first makes his appearance in March 1462. Of all members of the minor Perrot lines, his is the best documented life. It is known that he acquired property in the town of Haverfordwest, to which his son and heir transferred the family home after the death of John in June 1493.

His son and heir was also called John but little is known of his life and activities after 1495 other than the fact that he was firmly established as a burgess of Haverfordwest."

George married Isabella Langdale of Langdale Hall. Isabella was born in Yorkshire.

General Notes: Arms: Sable, a chevron between three estoiles, argent.

The child from this marriage was:

+ 2 M    i. Robert Perrot was born in 1478 in Yorkshire and died 20 Apr 1550 in Oxford at age 72.

    2. Robert Perrot (George of Haroldston/Haverfordwest1) was born in 1478 in Yorkshire and died 20 Apr 1550 in Oxford at age 72.

General Notes: Got the grant of arms in 1549- the 3 pears of the Welsh families + a star to show descent from the 3rd son.

First appears in Mary Magdalen College, Oxford, as attendant of John Stokysley, later Bishop of London. Apparetly Stokesley ot too friendly with Robert's wife, and the record indicates he had to pay him off with 20 marcs in 1506/7.

-1510: Robert becomes instructor of choristers
-1515: made organist; applies for license to study degree of Bachelor of Music; was asked to compose 1 mass and 1 song before proceeding. He must have obtained his degree, as there used to be a window of St. Peter in the East, depicting him with the inscription, "Robertus Perrot, Baccalaureus Musices."

-1529: was a proctor of the Guild of St. George in the church of St. Michael, Oxford

From PSOC 19(4):188: "His son, Simon, wrote in the family register that 'My father Mr. Robert Parret (sic) was born in Hachness in the Countie of York, his fathers name was George Parret, his mother's name was Isabell Langdall -- ' He also states tht his father was 72 years old when he died, thus b c 1478." This passage has led to speculation that the Oxfordshire branch of the family was derived from the Yorkshire branch.

Note: Barnwell lists an additional 3 sons (Robert, Thomas and William) based on "good authority" although they do not appear on the register (Bodl. MS Trinity College B 83 p. 111d), which also states there were only 10 children (pers com B.S.)

Robert married Alice Gardiner, daughter of Robert Gardiner and Alice Orpewood,. Alice was born in Sunningwell, Berkshire and died in 1588 in Oxford.

    The Perrot Oration

"This Oration is delivered in Hall on the Monday prior to St. Mark's Day, at the conclusion of dinner, and nowadays after the Choir has sung Grace and the Hymnus Eucharisticus. It is given by a Classical scholar in Latin and provides an annual account of the principal events of the year, including the retirement of Fellows and the arrival of new ones. The auditors consist of all of the Scholars, Demies and Sacristans of the College as well as the Fellows, Lecturers and their guests.

"Simon Perrot was a 16th century benefactor who left £1 to be divided among the President and Fellows present at his commemoration, 5s 4d to be divided among the Choristers and 1s 4d to the Choir Master. He also provided for the sermon which is delivered in the Chapel on the Sunday closest to St. Mark's Day."

From: British History Online, Source: North Leigh: Manor and other estates. A History of the County of Oxford: Volume XII, Alan Crossley (Editor) (1990):

"A branch of the Perrott family had lived at North Leigh for almost a century before the acquisition of the manor in 1676 by James Perrott. Simon Perrott (d. 1584), an Oxford lawyer related by marriage to Sir Thomas Pope, began to acquire copyhold land in North Leigh when, in 1559, he was appointed steward by Sir Thomas's widow Elizabeth. By 1581 Simon had a house at New Well End, a cottage at East End, 2 ½ yardlands, said to comprise 77 a. of arable land, a small meadow, and 6 closes."

Had homes in Northleigh and Oxford.
Pers com from B.S., 2013.: First of the family to move to Northleigh. Bought land there 1555 "This presumably happened because he was connected by marriage to Sir Thomas Pope who had bought the manor of North Leigh in 1544. (Simon's wife Elizabeth was the step-daughter of Sir Thomas Pope's sister.)"

Note: The manor of Sir Thomas Pope was later purchased by <a href=oxfordshire-silver pears.shtml">James Parrott</a>, from a different branch of the family.

Also Pers com from B.S.: "It is acually stated in Simon Perrott's Register (Bodl. MS Trinity College B 83, p. 111d) that Simon and his brothers and sisters were born in Oxford."

Simon married Elizabeth Love, daughter of Edward Love and Alice Arden, 28 Sep 1550. Elizabeth was born 1 Mar 1529, died 24 Dec 1572 at age 43, and was buried in St Peter's in the East, Oxford.

General Notes: Step niece of Thomas Pope, who originally owned the Northleigh property that went on to become Perrot property.

Note that son Robert appears to be born just 5 months after Ann his sister. As per Beryl Schumer: "I took those dates directly from Simon Perrott's Register, and it's probable that, since the New Year then began late in March, those in the 1st three months of the year should be, by our reckoning, a year later \endash i.e. Robert born 11 Jan 1553/4, Simon b 14 Jan 1554/5, Alice b 23 Feb 1555/6 ."
