This family was founded at Morton on Lugg in Herefordshire by John (#6 below) from Scotsborough, itself a branch of the main family from Pembroke. Altough the Hereford branch started rather humbly compared to their Pembroke relatives, it grew in wealth and prominence over time. The family came to acquire holdings in Wellington, and became known as 'of Wellington'. The final triumph in terms of wealth and prestige came when Sir James Perrott, last of the Pembrokeshire line, left his estate, including Haroldstone, to Sir Herbert Perrot (#62 below), of the Herefordshire line.

Nevertheless, Barnwell (1867) questioned if this family was really related to the Pembrokeshire branch. He stated that Sir James left his estate to Sir Herbert, solely through similarity of name and not through any blood connection. Others felt likewise. Woodcock (1984), Somerset Herald, upon reviewing their pedigree noted that "the immediate conclusion is that this claim should not have been allowed without further evidence showing the descent." Apparently the contemporary Perrot's agreed; Thomas, descended from the Carmathenshire Perrots and a grandson of Sir Owen, filed a suit with the Herald's Court alleging the Hereford Perrots were not entitled to bear the traditional Perrot arms. (Barnwell, 1867). The Herefored Perrots were able to prove their ancestry entitled them to arms; they won the suit, and retained their right to use them.

Further evidence of their relationship has come to ligth since then. According to Turvey (1999) the relationship between the two, while admittedly distant, is verified by the NLW roll 135 pedigree, and by the fact that the will of the first Francis Perrott (below) indicates the family had considerable land holdings in Pembrokeshire.

So, while Sirs James and Herbert were related, whether Sir James knew about the relationship remains a point of discussion. They were more closely related by marriage via the Bromwitch family, which might explain the bequest.

According to Barnwell (1867), this branch of the family did not use the usual Perrot arms until they obtained it from Sir James Perrot, last of the Pembrokeshire line. Instead, they used quarterly per fess indented or and azure. This arms was one of the ones quartered on that of Penelope, daughter of the last Sir Thomas Perrot, and is also considered to be the original family arms (Nichols 1870) in Kent. However, according to the London Visitation, the line of this family (John/Thomas/Richard) said to have gotten their arms from Sir James apparently had maintained the use of the traditional Perrot arms all along, with a cresent for difference. However, another line of this family (John/Thomas/Roger) had their arms respited but not dismissed.

Burke's Peerage includes a James Perrot of Wellington as a member of this family. He marries a Dorothy Perrot, said to be the daughter of the last Sir Thomas Perrot of Pembrokeshire, and his wife, Dorothy Devereaux. This lineage was concocted so that Owens-Perrot descendants could claim a more noble lineage (see Damaris Perrot, below). Barnwell and other sources make it clear the existence of this James and Dorothy is ficticious. Nevertheless, the Dames of the Magna Carta have accepted the existence of James Perrot of Wellington and Dorothy Perrot.

Notes: Mansions and Manors conflicts with Turvey here, in terms of who married John Seabourne. Since Mansions and Manors specify the wife was a 'daughter of John Perrot', I think this is the correct place for John Seaborne.

Richard married Alice Bromwich, daughter of Richard Bromwitch of Hereford and Margaret Berkeley.

Notes: Turvey p 404 and other sources (including the Herefordshire Roll & Mansions and Manors) list her as Margaret, daughter of Thomas Bromwich, grand uncle to Sir James Perrot.

Sir Herbert specifically refers to her as "Alice the daughter of Richard Bromch Esq" in his will. I am taking her grandson's pedigree to be the more accurate.

    Children from this marriage were:

From Turvey: 'In his will dated 23 March 1638 Francis Perrot (d 1642) refers to his two surviving elder brothers John and Robert to whom he intended to bequeath £1 abd £10 respectively, within a year of his death. P.C.C., PROB., 11/190. It is possible that John my have been either incapacitated or handicapped in some way."

Sister Alice is also mentioned, along with Alice and Robert's children. John dsp. All begs the question-- why aren't brothers Richard and William mentioned?

He marryed Alice the daughter of Richard Bromch Esq and by her had issue John Perrot, Robert Perrot Richart Perrot and Francis Perrot of London Merchant, and Alice Perrot and by a second Venter William Perrot in memory of whom Sir Herbert Perrot of Wellington Knight, son of Robert Perrot aforesaid hath caused this brasse to be erected and here placed."

William married Eleanor Monnington, daughter of Edwarde Monnington and Frances Unett.

Notes: See Visitation of Herefordshire,1569, p 50 for more information. Mansions and Manors (p 250) lists her parents as Edward Monington and Frances Unett, but then describes her as 'daughter and heir' of William Perrot of Moreton.

    -From Turvey, p 380:
"matriculated aged 17 in July 1589 at Brasenose College, Oxford, from here he presumably graduated soon after in the early 1590's."

    -From Barnwell, p 122:
"It was against Robert Perrot, his brother Francis, and his son Sir Herbert, that proceedings in the Herald's Court were taken for assuming the usual Perrot coat, they were not entitled thereto. The plaintiff was Thomas Perrot, a merchant of London. ... The plaintiff sets forth that Sir Owen Perrot of Hardleston (Haroldston) had four sons only, and exhibits his own descent from that family, which he proves by the bearings and depositions of divers persons. Now, as all recognized accounts give only two sons to Sir Owen, namely his heir, Thomas, and Robert, reader of Greek to Edward IV (and who appears to have died unmarried), it is not easy to ascertain how the plaintiff proved his descent, without relying on additions Philpot's Stemmata before alluded to, and who do assign two other sons to Sir Owen, namely Richard, described as bailiff of Sandwitch, who died without issue; and John, father of Thomas, of the Brook (now Claymor), who was the father of another Thomas. These additions are thought by Mr. King to be in the same writing as that of the rest of the MS. ... The suit must have taken place prior to 1642, the year that Frances Perrot died; and probably did take place between that year and 1636, when Sir Herbert came into the Haroldston bequest, and, naturally wishing to assume the usual Perrot coat, might have persuaded his father and uncle to do the same. Whatever was the result of the suit, Sir Herbert did ultimately use the disputed arms, as proved by the seal of his will and the monument in Wellington Church. The fact, however, of the claim being disputed confirms the statement that this branch of the Perrots were not related, or could not make out their relationship to the Haroldston family."

Mentioned in his son, Sir Herbert's will:
"I also desire by executrix to cause another plate of brasse to be engraven and settled in the parish Church of Titley near Stanton on Severene (Arrow) in the county of Hereford for my father with this inscription deep and well engraved.
Here lyeth the body of Robert Perrot of Morton upon Lug in the County of Hereford Gent, who deceased the . A monument to Francis, bearing his bust and the standard Perrott arms, is on the north wall of the nave of St. Mary's Church, Monnington-on-Wye, Herefordshire. A photo is posted at

Francis saw service at sea with the Venetian Republic against the Barbary Pirates. The following inscription is on his monument:

Upon the death of Francis Perrott,
Stay passanger-- if thou hast one tear
beflow it on the noble dust laid here.
Here Perrott lies, whose great capacious mind
His native limits scorned to be confined
To the unknown dangers of enranged seas
And foreign enemies more dangerous than these
His valour he exposed Venice may boast
The aid he lent her to defend her coast
Gainst unbelieving Turks-- Thus wifely he
    Commits his credit to posterity.
The fading memory of wicked men
Scarce their dry funeral surviveth when.
Thoes who by virtuous acts chance this name
Live in records of eternal fame.

Francis is also mentioned in his brother, Sir Herbert's will:

"it is my will and memory that I doe alsoe desire my Executrix to cause another plate of brasse to be engraven and erected in the pugh of Woolchurch in the city of London for my Uncle Francis Perrot with good and deep letters containing this inscription "Here lyeth the body of Francis Perrot Gent : of London merchant who deceased the day of September I the [year] 1642. He was the third sonne of Richard Perrot of Moron upon Lug in the county of Hereford Esqr and Alice Bromch his wife. Hee was a very religious chartable and affable Gent. very kind to all his countrymen and Relacions. Sir Herbert Perrot of Wellington in the County of Pembroke and also of Haroldstone in the county of Pembroke being his nephew and executor of his last will and Testament hath caused this Brasse to be here erected and placed in memory of his dear uncle to whose love and care he was highly accountable for his breeding and educacon"

Notes: The Dorothy Perrot-James Perrot of Wellington legend

Mythical parents of Damaris Perrot Owens.

"Famed genealogist Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792 \endash 1872) developed the descent from Edward III, King of England to William Tucker Edwardes (1784 \endash 1858) of Sealyham, Sheriff for Pembrokeshire.

"Unfortunately the pedigree of Sir Thomas Phillipps and the subsequent works of Burke, Alcwyn Caryni Evans and others which reproduce this flawed descent have existed for so long that they have become accepted without question or further examination. The pedigree below is correct
at all generations with the one vital exception of Dorothy Perrot married to James Perrot of Wellington. These people simply did not
exist and were apparently invented to create this descent."

"Edward III, King of England (1321-1377) = Philippa of Hainault, Queen of England (1311-1369)

"Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence, 4th Earl of Ulster (1338-1368) = Elizabeth de Burgh (descendant of Henry III, King of England) (1332-1363)"

"Isabel Plantagenet (1409-1484) = Henry Bourchier, Comte d' Eu, 1st Earl of Essex (1406-1483)"

"Sir William Bourchier, Viscount Bourchier (circa 1434-1471 at the Battle of Barnet) = Anne Wydeville (died 1489), sister of Elizabeth Wydeville, Queen of Edward IV, King of England"

On this account it is supposed, that captain South was the more readily pardoned, after his condemnation, for stabbing Herbert in the back, as he turned from him in the passage of the Devil Tavern, Fleet-street, London; in which place he had vanquished South, and on his knees, delivered him his sword, bidding him to thank his daughter for his life."
