  • Augustine and his father, John, were from King George Co., Virginia, in the 1700's, where John was a Planter. Other than that, there is very little known about the origins of this family. Augustine moved to Mathews county, where the family of Lawrence Parrott was. However, it is not known if the move was purely coincidental, or if it reflected a family relationship.

The relationships shown here for the early generations remain very speculative, and have not been sufficiently proven. Use the information cautiously.

The town of Parrott, in Pulaski County, Virginia, was named after John Henry Parrott (1847-1930), grandson of Augustine, who starting in 1902 managed, in addition to probably being a shareholder of, the Pulaski Anthracite Coal mine there, although he never lived in Parrott.

    *****************************************************************

The sweet life of Mrs. Marie Louise Parrott Rutherford went out as quickly, August 20th, as the dew of the morning when kissed by the sunlight. Her master said "Come." and she vanished from sight. Mrs. Rutherford underwent a serious operation and many were praying in her behalf were very hopeful for her recovery, but God had something richer and more beautiful for his child than earth can afford. No more of the sufferings of this life will come to this one who has so faithfully filled the position as pastor's wife in the Baptist Parsonage, without murmurings, with cheerfullness, although the body was not without pain.

Mrs. Rutherford had a deep spiritual life, the fragrance of which will be lasting. The kind words spoken by her lips now silent, will linger as a benediction. The many stitches taken in the missionary society for those in need so cheerfully, by the hands now quietly folded, will inspire her sisters to greater activity of her work in the church which she loved, and the home which was so near her heart, It can be said well done. Mrs. Rutherford had lived among us but sixteen months and those who knew her had learned to love her. She was the oldest daughter of Deacon Charles Parrott, of Mathews, Va. and was forty years of age. On July 21st Mrs. Rutherford and her companion, the Rev. William Rutherford celebrated the third anniversary of their marriage which had been three years of joy.

Our little village Church will miss the dear sister, But it will think of her as a soul robed in white, by the Saviour commended. To the heart-broken husband we can only commend to the Father who counts the tears and deeply feels for and comforts his children. To the loved ones in the South land, we extend our sympathy.

The funeral services were held Wednesday evening in the Baptist church, with five brothers, in the ministry, presiding. Touching music was rendered by the choir. The floral pieces were very beautiful and showed a testimony of love. The body was taken to Mathews, Va., on Thursday by Rev. Rutherford and a friend the Rev. A. F. Johnson, of Port Jefferson.

    Sallie Augusta Parrott Obituary

    Deaths

    **************************************************

    Sally Augusta Parrott

On the 21st day of June 1918 Miss Sallie Augusta
Parrott, familiarly known as Miss Gussie Parrott died at Williamsburg, Va. Her home was Mathews but after the death of her mother about seven months ago, her health failed and she was sent to Williamsburg for treatment. So bound by Love the life of the mother, was the life of the daughter that her frail body was not able to endure the shock, and she pined away until only the frame of the fair and gentle daughter remained. It was Heaven's relief for a stricken mind and a sorrowing heart when the death angel came to bear her soul away to the Haven of rest.

She was born February 26, 1883. She was baptized by Dr. Owen into the Fellowship of Westville Baptist Church during his Pastorate there. Up until the time of her mother's death she was an efficient Sunday School Teacher in her Church. She leaves her aged father, one sister and two brothers to mourn her departure, the many friends and family and the former scholars and associates of Miss Gussie deeply grieved over her departure. May the Lord deal tenderly with the dear ones over who'se lives the clouds hang so heavily.

    Affectionately, Her Pastor

    J. R. Stodghill

    36. John Henry Parrott II (Jack (John Cromwell)5, John Henry4, John Henry Sr.3, Augustine Sr2, John1) was born on 2 Aug 1927 in Roanoke, Virginia and died on 18 Jan 2014 in Roanoke, Virginia, at age 86. Another name for John was Jack Parrott\.

Notes: John Henry Parrott II, 89, of Roanoke, died on Wednesday, January 18, 2017. He was the son of John Cromwell Parrott of Roanoke, Virginia, and Sarah Bulloch Parrott of Eufaula, Alabama, both now deceased. Jack was born in Roanoke on August 2, 1927. He grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg. On his return from serving in the United States Navy at the end of World War II, he attended Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1950 as a civil engineer. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps. of Engineers in Korea during the Korean War. He returned to Roanoke where he lived for the rest of his life. He was active as an engineer and builder and was involved in many construction projects in Roanoke and the region.

Jack is survived by his wife of 12 years, Anne Nimmo Dixon Parrott, and by his three children from his first wife, Brooke Morris Parrott, who died in 2003: son John Henry Parrott Jr. of Roanoke and his wife, Martha Field Parrott, along with their three children, John Henry Parrott III, Elizabeth Trout Parrott, and William Buckner Parrott; son Barton Cromwell Parrott of Charlottesville and his wife, Maryann Altman, along with their three children, Julia Buckner Parrott, Andrew Barton Parrott, and Lila Blair Parrott; and daughter Mary Brooke Parrott Sligh of Savannah, Georgia, and her husband Stuart Frederick Sligh, along with their daughter, Brooke Wilkinson Sligh. For decades he volunteered on a number of local government and civic bodies, including the Planning Commission for the Roanoke Valley, the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority, the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center Commission, and the Stadium Study Committee.

Jack had many friends and was known for his friendly and playful sense of humor. He was active and had many interests. He grew up fishing and hunting and loved the outdoors all his life. He was an accomplished builder, woodworker, and gardener. He painted landscapes. He liked to take things apart and tinker. He built and flew (and often had to repair) radio-controlled airplanes made of wood. For many years he designed and made Christmas presents out of wood in his basement workshop; no one ever wanted to get off his list. Jack lived a long and fortunate life and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

The family appreciates all of the affection and kindness shown for Jack since his stroke in November. They would also like to thank the staff of the Raleigh Court Health & Rehabilitation Center for their care and friendliness.
