Because every lineage has unique Y-DNA, Y-DNA testing can help fill in the gap where paper records are not available. Thus far, most of the Y-DNA testing has been of the Southern families, which has made it possible to determine which family lines are related to each other as part of a larger family. Y-DNA testing is most lagging for the Northeast and Midwest families. Nevertheless, already, it is clear from Y-DNA testing that the USA P-rr-tt surname [derived from the French for little Peter, i.e., Peterson; alternatively a dweller near the Perrott river] is a name adopted by many unrelated families. To participate in this study, make sure the test is a Y-DNA test! There are now many types of DNA tests available. The tests sold by Ancestry and 23&Me are primarily atDNA tests, which are excellent for some purposes, but cannot pin down family lines the way Y-DNA does.

Espirit François (grandson of Albert and nephew of Jacques) moved from Quebec to Clinton Co., New York, ca. 1837. His descendants remain in the area and surrounding states. Current spelling of surname = Parrott & Parrotte. #FFFFFF
This group is the 5th largest Parrott family in the US today, accounting for about 3% of all Parrotts. Many descendants are still in Maryland, but most have moved throughout the midwest. The main group is one of the first wave of Parrott families that arrived in the 1600's. A second branch arrived in the 1800's.
This is a family group descended from Frederick Parrott, who settled in Shendandoah, Virginia. This family founded Parrottsville, Cocke Co., Tennessee, and gave rise to many of the Midwest Parretts/Parrotts. This is the largest of the families that arrived in the 1700's. Today, Frederick's descendants are the 3rd largest Parrott family in the US.
Note: There is an earlier group in Edgecomb county. It was founded by John Perritt, b ca 1690, but the records are very poor, and the family soon disappears from the record. Nevertheless, it is probable that the Parrotts currently in Edgecomb & Nash counties are descended from this first group:
This family left Ireland ca 1952, and settled in Lawrence Co., Illinois. Desdendants have spread from there.
There is enough of a paper record to suggest that these families are really branches of other families listed above. However, the necessary paper trail needed to place them in their correct groups is still missing. DNA testing could help make up for the missing paper trail.

His son Jacques moved from Quebec to Clinton Co., New York. His son Joseph later moved from Canada and settled in Grand Isle Co., Vermont, while his son Theophile's son, Theophile Jr., did likewise and settled in Burlington Co., Vermont. The story goes that John Parrott had stolen two shirts in England, and therefore, was sent to American colonies to serve 14 years as an indentured servant. His descendants moved to Fountain Co., Indiana, and from there spread mainly to Illinois, Iowa and Missouri.

Even so its origins are unclear, as the 1880 US census gives the birth place for Bryant as North Carolina, while the 1900 census gives it as South Carolina. His son Wesley's death certificate lists Bryant as being born in Darlington Co., South Carolina. SC census records have the brothers born in North Carolina. Today, the family is primarily identified with Darlington county in South Carolina. There are other African-American Parrott families in the county, but thus far, the paper record does not connect them. Only a Y-DNA test will be able to tell if they are related or not.
