  • William Parrott (b ~1775, probably in Virginia, though North Carolina is possible) is believed to be the earliest known ancestor (verification needed) of a Parrott family that settled in Granville county, North Carolina. A sub-branch later settled in Danville, Virginia. A publicly available complete family tree has never been assembled for the Parrott family of Granville, and some of the trees posted on-line are error-ridden. The results presented here are an attempt to assemble such a tree, and the information still needs to be verified.

A William Parrott, patriarch of the Parrott branch in this file, is in Granville county ca. 1800. In addition several other Parrott families also appear east of Granville. Specifically, Joseph Parrott buys land in 1773 in what is to become Nash county. More Parrotts appear in Pitt county by the mid 1850s, beginning with Benjamin. From where they expanded into Beaufort county. These other families are extremely poorly documented, and none have had their Y-DNA tested. The possibility that these families are related to each other needs to be further explored, with the caveat that proximity is not necessarily an indication of kinship.

However, William's descendant Y-DNA suggests common ancestry with a Moss family with members both in Virginia or North Carolina. A contemporary, Nathaniel Parrott [a grandson or other descendant of an older Nathaniel] was in Granville in the 1790s. Nathaniel's family is of interest as his ancestors crossed paths in Franklin Co., Virginia, with the Moss family, and would have provided the Parrott surname to William. This could have happened in a variety of ways, ranging from adoption or a Moss fathering a child with a Parrott.

The maps below show the locations of the various Parrott families mentioned here, for whom Y-DNA testing would be useful.

  • 1. William Henry Parrott was born in 1775 in Virginia and died in North Carolina.

Notes: William and his wife still need verification.

    Children from this marriage were:

Notes: Note: Mary Jane has been assigned to her parents primarily by the process of elimination. There were no other Parrotts in the county at the time, and she is the perfect age to be their youngest child. Also, William Parrott (her father?) was bondsman for her marriage.

Mary married Samuel Greenway on 30 Sep 1847 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Samuel was born in 1823 in Granville Co., North Carolina and died on 31 Dec 1863 in Washington, DC, at age 40.

In the 1870 census, he is with who must be his grandchildren.

Notes: Cliff Parrot Ends Life With Bullet After Calling Undertaker to Come for Him

Shoots Self Through Temple While Seated in His Automobile Near Luna Lake-- Had Eluded Vigilence of Friends After Brooding All Day Sunday-- Well Known Employee of Local Mills and Prominent in Fraternal Orders

Clifton J. Parrott, employe of the Riverside and Dan River Cotton Mills and prominent in fraternal orders, ended his own life last night at eleven o'clock, close to the entrance to Luna Lake, after brooding all of the day. He shot himself through the temple while seated in his automobile. His son, Bascom Parrott, alarmed over the threats of his father, and realizing that he had eluded the vigilance of friends who had remained with Parrott most of Sunday, heard the shot that killed his father as his car was in pursuit.

That the act was deliberate was unquestioned, since a few minutes before killing himself he telephoned to Thomas Fox, undertaker, directing him to send his hearse to Luna Lake, that he intended to end his life and that it would "all be over" in a few minutes.

Friends today were not able to explain fully the act, although they knew that Parrott, who lived on Claiborne street, had appeared to be distraught all day and had made a number of remarks which were construed as meaning that he intended to take his own life.

A revolver in the home was removed and hidden during the course of the day and various friends of Mr. Parrott remained with him largely for the purpose of restraining him from any act of self destruction. At the time John Siviter was there, Parrott fell asleep and Siviter, seizing the opportunity to go home, did so to tell his family that he might remain all night at the Parro's (sic) home. During the interval Parrott awakened, secured a gun and, unhindered, secured his car and drove away. He was not missed immediately.

Parrott drove to Bannerville and stopped at the home of Calvin Casper where he secured the use of the telephone and called Thomas Fox, giving the instruction to send for his body, saying that "everything would be over" by the time he got there.

Mr. Fox did not take the report seriously and was unable to trace the point of the telephone call. Within half an hour another call reached the undertaker, saying that Parrott was dead.

After leaving the telephone Parrott re-entered his car, dropped it down the sharp hill leading to the parking enclosure of the bathing resort, and shot himself almost before his car had stopped.

When his son and James Weadon arrived a few seconds afterwards, followed by Police Lieutenant O.S. Mayberry and Officer W.L. Hall, Parrott's right foot was still on the foot brak, illuminating the rear stop light and his other was pressed hard on the clutch. He had slumped backward and there was a revolver bullet hole through the right temple.

Mr. Parrott was a past grand sachem of Virginia of the Red Med and had done much to build up the organization in Danville, being a member of the Poquoson Tribe and invariably playing an important part in the organizzation's affairs. He was also prominent in the affairs of the Junior Order.

It was recalled today that his brother, Tom Parrott, several years ago, in a moment of aberration, also ended his life.

Where Parrott secured the revolver is not quite clear but he secured one sometime after 9:45 o'clock. At that hour he approached Police Offier A.C. Morgan, on duty at Craighead street, and asked the officer to lend him his service revolver as he wished to go out into the country.

Morgan says that Parrott appeared cool and collected. The officer told him that it was against service regulations for an officer on duty to part with his revolver and told Parrott that under any circumstance he would not let him have it.

"I reminded him of the time when another officer lent a friend his gun and in half an hour that man had committed suicide."

Officer Morgan said that Parrott looked queer as he made the remark, turned away and left without another word.

The funeral of Mr. Parrott will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at four o'clock from his late home on Claiborne street and wil be conducted by Rev. P.W. Hodge. The Red Men will conduct their services at the grave. The family has requested no flowers.

Mr. Parrott, who was 42 years of age, is survived by his widow, fomerly miss Mamie Murphy and four children, Hazel, Thelma, Eunice and Bascom Parrott.

Mr. Parrott discussed his own funeral arrangements with friends during the course of Sunday and said that a ltter would be found in his trunk containing full details. It was found today and it listed the pall bearers, priced the casket and made detailed arrangements for the interment.

Founders of Parrott TV and Appliance were 85 and 63

    By Jim Murez
    Mid-Valley Sunday

A father and son responsible for a mid-valley landmark died last month within a week of each other.

Harry Thomas Parrott, 85, and his son, Donald Wayne Parrott, 63, opened Parrott TV and Appliance in 1970 in Corvallis, and it has been a recognized business on Highway 34 between Corvallis and Tangent for more than a quarter century.

Donald Parrott started a TV repair service in 1968, using the knowledge he gained as an electronics technician in the Navy.

In those days, TVs needed their tubes repaired nearly every 90 days, so visits to homes were common. "They greeted you at the door with a cup of coffee and a donut," recalled Brenda Parrott, Don's wife, of those days in the business.

Two years later, Donald opened the store on Ninth Street with his father, selling televisions and appliances. Then, seizing an opportunity to expand the business, they relocated in 1975 to the corner of Highway 34 and Riverside Drive. Some folks questioned the move out of town, but Harry and Donald thought it better positioned the business in many ways. Brenda Parrott worked that first day at the new store, while others stayed behind at the one on Ninth Street moving supplies. When they called to check how business was going, Brenda told them she needed help.

"We got so many people," she said. Because desks and other furniture were still being moved, she used two washing machine boxes to write up orders, and sales were brisk.

The store also was the first on the West Coast to use the warehouse concept in retail.

"They thought that was the ticket," Brenda recalled. Harry and Donald bought in volume, belonged to a buying group and had low overhead.

In 1989, they built an addition to the store and added furniture and bedding to the line. Five years ago, they added a prominent sign to advertise the business.
"They were always looking for an edge," Brenda said.
It was a family business, with Harry's wife, Annie; Brenda; and her and Don's sons, Bob and Rick, also part of the store.

Notes: Deceased Name: Harry Thomas Parrott, and Donald Wayne Parrott: Father and son business partners die in April

Donald Parrott died April 23 in Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. Harry Parrott died April 17 in Good Samaritan Hospital.

Harry was born in Danville, Va., on May 10, 1916, to John H. and Pearl G. Stanfield Parrott. He married Annie Jones on March 3, 1938, in Danville, Va. He retired from the Army April 1, 1968, after serving for 33 years. During that time, he was a member of the first Officers Candidate School at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He received the Army Commendation Award in 1964.

He and his wife moved from Columbia, S.C., to Corvallis to join Donald in business.

He enjoyed gardening and sharing produce and flowers with many friends.

In addition to his wife, Annie, survivors include two grandsons; four grandsons; his brothers, Leon and Paul Parrott; and his sister, Rachel Horton -- all of Danville.

Arrangements are by McHenry Funeral Home. Contributions can be made to the Mennonite Home's Lydia House in care of the funeral home, 206 N.W. Fifth St., Corvallis, OR 97330.

Donald Parrott was born in Danville, Va., on Dec. 30, 1938, to Harry T. and Annie E. Jones Parrott. He grew up in Ruffin, N.C., and graduated from Ruffin High School in 1957. He was a veteran of the Navy and belonged to Rotary. He enjoyed golfing with friends, playing regularly with a group at Marysville Golf Course.

In addition to his wife, Brenda, survivors include his sons, Robert T. and Richard C. Parrott, both of Corvallis; four grandchildren; and his mother.
Contributions can be made to the Moses Cone Cardiac Unit, 1200 N. Elm St., Greensboro, N.C., 27401.

A celebration of life for both men will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Corvallis Evangelical Church, 1525 N.W. Kings Blvd., with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating.
