Joseph, the founder of this lineage, has unknown origins. He was born in the early-to-mid 1700's. Overall, this family is extremely poorly documented, particularly the early years, so use this information very cautiously. A branch of this family ended up in Leake Co., Mississippi, where an unrelated Parrott family also ended up. Another thing to consider is that Nash residents likely never really moved at all. The counties of Edgecombe/Northampton and Nash happened all around them over time.

Three other Parrott families originated in these adjoinging counties, raising the possibility that they are all part of the same family. Given the absence of paper records, Y-DNA tests will be required to either verify or exclude the possibility.

The best known of the North Carolina Parrotts from this region of the state is Francis Parrott. Volumes have been written trying to connect him to contemporary Parrott families in Virginia and Maryland, but no attention has been paid to possible relationships with the other Parrott families living near him and his descendants.

The North Carolina Parrotts settled on what was then the western frontier of the Colony, and moved west as the frontier expanded. It is not known when Francis got his land, but he was in the area by 1691. His land was on Salmon Creek, on the west side of the Chowan River. A contemporary, John Perritt, bought 640 acres in 1710 on the north side of Bridger's Creek near the Roanoke River, some 80 miles to the west of Francis. George Pollock, son of Col. Thomas Pollock, Sr. had land adjacent to both of them. Thus, Pollock would represent a connection between John and Francis. Alternatively, it could simply be a coincidence.

By 1755, there is a Thomas Parrett, in Edgecomb Co., on the south side of the Roanoke river, who was a probable son of John. He crossed paths with the Razors -- Francis's widow married a Razor, again suggesting that John, Thomas, and Francis were part of the same social group. There are no Parrotts alive today who have a paper trail back to John. However, other Parrotts show up in nearby counties, and they may well be John's descendants. Records for the time and the area are incomplete. Joseph, founder of this Nash group, bought land in 1773 in what is to become Nash county. A William Parrott, patriarch of the Granville Parrott branch, is in Granville county by ca. 1800. More Parrotts appear in Pitt county by the mid 1850s, beginning with Benjamin. From where they expanded into Beaufort county.

The maps below show the locations of the various Parrott families mentioned here.

  • 1. Joseph Parrott Sr.

    Notes: From Janice McAlpine:

Joseph Parrott probably married Annis Tucker. Joseph had land and other dealings with the Tuckers in Edgecombe and Nash and Annis Tucker was listed as "Anas Parrott" in her mother's 1795 will.

Joseph was on Edgecombe records until 1777, when part of Edgecombe became Nash Co. He was on the 1790 census in Nash Co. with what appear to be 3 sons:

    1790 > NORTH CAROLINA > NASH > HALIFAX DIST Series: M637 Roll: 7 Page: 19
    Joseph Parrott 2, 3, 4

I believe one son was William, and another Joseph.

Notes: Cherokee County District Clerk Fatally Injured
RUSK - The Cherokee County District Clerk, William Thomas "Bill" Parrott was killed Saturday morning when the tractor he was driving overturned on a Cherokee County Road near Reklaw.

Parrott and an employe, Roscoe Sessions, went out around 9 a.m. Saturday to clear some small trees and brush from Parrott's farm. He was using a one inch steel cable attached to the rear of his medium tractor, passing the cable around the saplings he was uprooting.

Investigating Department of Public Safety Highway Patrolman Dan North said Parrott had pulled three saplings up before the accident occurred. On the four sapling, the tree would not come out. The tricycle-type tractor came up o (sic) its rear wheels, the center of gravity shifted, and the machine overturned - pinning Parrott underneath.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Rusk County Justice of the Peace C.R. Stockton. It was first thought that the accident had occurred in Rusk County; but susequent investigation revealed it occurred several hundred feet inside Cherokee County.

The accident has not yet been classified as a traffic fatality by the D.P.S. Parrott was on a county roud when the accident occurred, though the trees he was attempting to remove were on his own property.
