Schoharie still focused on the Parrott House
    6/13/2018, By Jim Poole

"Frustrating but optimistic" is the way supporters of the Parrott House describe their feelings about the Schoharie landmark's recovery.

And that recovery may take a while, as those close to the project continue to seek a buyer for the flood-damaged former restaurant, bar and hotel.

"It keeps the fabric of the village whole," said Schoharie Mayor John Borst. "It's one piece that's critical to Schoharie."

Ever since Hurricane Irene in 2011\endash\endash and maybe before\endash\endash the Parrott House story has been one of starts and stops.

Dennis and Ruth Coughtry bought the Parrott House in 2015 and started restoration. But they moved out of the area, and although the project stopped, the Coughtrys still own the building.

It was almost exactly a year ago that Village of Schoharie officials planned to use grant money to buy and restore the Parrott House.

Those plans fell through, and now Madison Wellman, who works for the Schoharie Community Development Corporation and the Schoharie County Industrial Development Agency is looking for a buyer.

Mr. Wellman has had a few leads. Developer Carver Laraway was interested but decided he needed a partner before going forward, Mr. Wellman said.

Two others are interested in the property, he added.

The general idea is to restore the building to its former heyday as a restaurant and bar on the first floor and hotel rooms above.

"For generations, it was the center meeting place for banquets and big affairs," said Mayor Borst.

"But more importantly, it was a place to get people out of their backyards and homes and get together."

Those times may be coming again\endash\endash if the numbers work.

"The next step is to determine whether an investor can get a return if he turned it into a hotel," Mr. Wellman said.

"There's a question of keeping it filled. I'm feeling confident it could because there's a shortage of hotel space."

A study done last year estimated restoration at $7 million.
That price seems too steep, according to Nan Stolzenburg, a planner and board member of the Community Development Corporation.

She cited an earlier restoration estimate of $1.5 million.

Cost will depend on its use. John Wilkinson, chair of the Community Development Corporation, said the foundation is sound, but there's electrical, plumbing and roof work to do, along with heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

Although price is the key issue, the importance of the Parrott House is undeniable, Ms. Stolzenburg said.

Schoharie's comprehensive plan, done in 1995, identified the building as essential to Main Street and the village's economic development.

And for the long-term recovery plan after Irene, "the number-one thing people focused on was getting the Parrott House back," Ms. Stolzenburg said.

A half-dozen years later, people still feel that way, she added.
"We all hope that it will be kind of what it was," Ms. Stolzenburg said. "We need to find someone that has the vision and sees the long-term value."

At the same, though, she agreed with Mr. Wellman by adding that "restoration's got to make economic sense.
    "We're frustrated but still optimistic."

    4. Mathies Parrott (William1) was born on 11 May 1837 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., New York and died on 22 Apr 1900 in Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan at age 62. Another name for Mathies was Matt Parrott.

General Notes: Bio- Parrott Talk 11:49. Became a prominent journalist in Iowa

Matt. Parrott is a native of Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York, and was born on the 11th of May 1837. He is a son of William and Maria (Beck) Parrott. William Parrott was a baker by trade, with quite as many children as he could supply with bread, there being ten in all, our subject standing third from the head. At thirteen, in the autumn of 1850, Matt. Entered the office of the Schoharie " Patriot," then published by Peter Mix, and received his first lessons in the art of printing. In 1854 he left this office, a full-blown journeyman printer, and took his first " tramp." Obtaining a situation in the job department of the Troy, New York, "Traveler," he remained a few months; returned to his native town and worked in the "Republican" office until early in 1855; went to Utica, and obtained a situation on the " Morning Herald "; in July, 1856, started for the west; spent a few weeks on the Chicago " Democrat," published by John Wentworth; went to Davenport, Iowa, in August, and worked in the "Evening News" office until about the 1st of February, 1857, when he connected himself with the office of Luse, Lane and Co., who were then printing the debates on the new constitution. The following summer, he found a situation on the Burlington " Hawkeye." In December of the same year he went to Anamosa, Jones county, and entered into partnership with C. L. D. Crockwell in the publication of the " Eureka," a paper then in its first year. In the autumn of 1863 we find Mr. Parrott once more in the office of Luse, Lane and Co. (this time in the position of foreman), then the largest job- printing and publishing house in the state. He remained in that situation until 1869. In February of the year just mentioned, in company with J. J. Smart, he purchased the office of the " Iowa State Reporter " at Waterloo, Black Hawk County, a paper originated as a democratic organ, and which had died of the political measles at the end of about eight months. Two months later the "Reporter" was revived as a republican paper; a bindery was added in June, and the business of manufacturing blank books for counties actively commenced. In 1872 James L. Girton became a member of the firm, and the name was changed to Smart, Parrott and Co. In January 1876, Mr. Smart retired, and J. P. Sherman took an interest, and the firm name was changed to Parrott, Girton and Sherman. The "Reporter" has a spacious and inviting home of its own, forty by eighty feet, built by Smart and Parrott. Mr. Parrott has been in the council of Waterloo two or three years; was president of the school board of East Waterloo independent district in 1873 and 1874, and is now mayor of Waterloo, being elected in March, 1877, and reflected on the 4th of March, 1878, after a unanimous nomination and an almost unanimous vote, receiving all but seventeen in a poll of eight hundred and eleven. These positions all came to him unsought, and were accepted only after repeated solicitations from his neighbors and townsmen. In January 1878, Mr. Parrott was a candidate for state binder before the general assembly, and after a lively canvass, with two competitors in the field; he was nominated on the first ballot. His official term will not commence until the 1st of May 1879. Should his business take him to Des Moines, even temporarily, he will be missed in Waterloo. Mr. Parrott has been a member of the Masonic fraternity since 1860, and has held various official positions. On the 25th of October 1859, he was married at Davenport to Miss Frank M. Field, youngest daughter of Isaac N. Field, and they have three boys. Mr. Parrott has gray eyes, a florid complexion, an unwrinkled face, a young look, a pleasant disposition, and the cordiality of a sincere, honest and warm heart. He is five feet and eight inches tall, weighs one hundred and. ninety pounds, and has very symmetrical proportions.

    -----------
He went on to serve in the Iowa State Senate, and was Lieutenant Governor of Iowa from 1896-1898.

    MATT PARROTT DIES IN IOWA
Ex-Lieutenant Governor of Iowa Passes Away at Battle Creek, Mich., After Lingering Illness

Waterloo, Ia., April 22.--[Special.]-- Former Lieutenant Governor of Iowa Matt Parrott died last night at a sanitarium at Battle Creek, Mich. The cause of his death was Bright's disease, of which he had been a sufferer fro some time. On the advice of his physicians early in January he went to Eureko Springs, Ark., and about a month ago was taken to Battle Creek with the hope that the ravages of the disease might be overcome. His death, while expected, has proved a shock to this community and to the State at large.

Mr. Parrott was born in Schoharie County, New York, on May 11, 1837. At the age of 18 he began work at the printers' trade in his native town. A few years later he came west and worked in Chicago on the old Democrat when John Wentworth was the editor. In 1869 he came to Waterloo and purchased an interest in the Iowa State Reporter, which with his sons, he conducted since that date.

    Printing Firm Marks 100th Year

Matt Parrott Established Family 'Dynasty' With Historic Effect on Waterloo and Iowa

    BY PATTY JOHNSON

Printing and Parrott have been interrelated since 1850 -- and in Waterloo for a century.

The 100th year of the liaison between the two will be marked, appropriately enough by 100 guests next Thursday when Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Parrott entertain at a dinner in the Walnut Rooom of the Elks Club for employes of Matt Parrott & Sons Co.

Robert Parrott, grandson of the founder, is now chairman of the board, with Harrington Buck as president.

Among the special guests invited to the event, in addition to retired employes, are Matt Parrott, son of Lou G. Parrott, an Jay Parrott, son of James S. Parrott. Lou and Jim were among the original owners.

    Third of 10 Children
The first Matt was a native New Yorker, son of William and Maria Parrott, English immigrants who settled in Albany and later in Schoharie, where young Matt, third of 10 children, was born in 1837.

At 13, he began his printing career at the The Patriot in Schoharie, where he worked until 1854 to become a journeyman printer and pressman. After two years more of work in New York, he came to Chicago to work for the Chicago Democrat. Then young Matt tried Iowa, where he found a home. After working on the Burlington Hawkeye and serving as foreman of a printing company, interspersed with a period of co-ownership of the Anamosa Eureka, he and Jay Smart purchased the Democrat Organ in Waterloo in 1868.

    Political Switch
However, the paper was not to Parrott and Smart's political tastes. They changed the name to the Iowa State Reporter after two months and then a couple of months later added a bindery and the manufacturer of blank books for Iowa counties. Both facets of the business thrived. So did Parrott, who became a civic leader as well as a newspaperman and printer. By 1884, the business was wholly a Parrott project, Smart having retired in 1876 and other associates between 1880 and 1883.

In 1859, Matt had married Miss Frank M. Field at Davenport and the couple had three sons: William, L. G. (Lou) and James S. Parrott. When Matt took over the firm in its entirety as Matt Parrott & Sons, William and Lou became associates. By then, in a building 40 by 80 feet in size, the Reporter considered its facilities as spacious and well-equipped as any in the state.

Parrott himself was on his way to becoming known throughout Iowa. A Mason and a Whig, he was one of the founders of Christ Episcopal Church. He also served on the Waterloo City Council for three years, was president of the East Waterloo school board in 1873 and 1874 and was elected mayor three times in 1877, 1878 and 1879 when he received all except nine votes in a total of 1,050.

His business and political career went hand-in-hand. He served as state binder from 1879 to 1885 and was nominated that year by acclamation as a Republican state senator and elected that November. He served eight years, plus two as lieutenant governor from 1896 to 1898.

    Dad Took Over
When he died in 1900, his son, William Field Parrott, later known throughout Iowa as "Dad," became president of Matt Parrott & Sons Co. He'd been brought up on printer's ink and had traveled by horse and buggy through the area selling printing supplies and Reporter subscriptions. The firm was incorporated in 1908. After the newspaper was merged with the Waterloo Courier in 1914, the company continued its printing and commercial sales work.

"Dad" Parrott also was given credit for the completion of Hwy. 20 from Dubuque to Sioux City as part of bus campaign for better roads. He was a co-founder of the Iowa Good Roads Association, a member of the Black Hawk County Republican Central Committee for more than 50 years, secretary for 10 years of the National Editorial Association and a frequent observer at sessions of the Iowa legislature.

    Children Shareholders
L.G. Parrott, who'd been an editor of the newspaper, died in 1911 and was succeeded by Dad until its sale three years later. Then Jim and Dad bought out Lou's estate and continued the business until Dad's death in 1945 when Jim became president and Dad's three children: Robert, Elizabeth Parrott Wenner and Frances Parrott Pearson, were equal shareholders of their father's stock, Before Jim died in 1948, Robert had purchased his interest and later those of his sisters.

The dinner Thursday will include Waterloo relatives, as well as officials and directors from throughout Iowa.

    Planted the Seed
Although the newspaper facet of Matt Parrott's enterprise no longer exists, he planted the seeds which grew into the present plant at 514 Bratnober St., third location for the business, and now including commercial printing, business and governmental supplies, advertising layout and design, office furnishings and office planning services, the latter housed at nearby 319 Broadway.

Matt Parrott began life as the village baker's son, but the family empire he founded rose from his own conviction that a man gains in stature by more than what fills his stomach. Matt Parrott created his own successful recipe for enriching the mind.

Rugers military instructor leaves to-night to rejoin 27 infantry- George Nuttmann in charge.

Captain Ralph B. Parrott, who was detailed at Rutgers College by the War Department as instructor of military science and tactics, has now been ordered by the department to join his regiment, the Twenty-seventh infantry, which is in Newport News, Virginia, preparing to join the army of occupation in Cuba.

The captain expects to leave New Brunswick to-night.

He has been here since the college opening, taking up the drill work where it was left off when Captain Smiley left the college last Spring. The military work in the college will be conducted by George W. Nuttmann until another army officer is assigned by the War Department. It is likely, of course, that the army will be ordered home from Cuba in a short time, in which case the probabilities are that Captain Parrott will return to Rutgers.

    Parrott Makes His Mark Abroad
Ross N. Hood, of Philadelphia, who served as a Y.M.C.A. secretary in France, was a visitor in New Brunswick to-day. Mr. Hood, while abroad, had the good fortune to meet Col. Ralph Parrott, a graduate of Rutgers College and a former Metuchen resident. Mr. Hood was greatly impressed with Col. Parrott's military career in war, and like everyone who knows him, believes he is the ideal soldier.

Col. Parrott now has the important position of Provost Marshal of Paris, and is regarded as one of the coming men of the United States Army. Those who claim to know state that had the war gone six months more, Col. Parrott would have been given the rank of brigadier-general.

Col. Parrott was in the Argonne drive with the First Army Corps held in reserve, and was frequently under machine gun fire. He was in the last drive made by the Germans the Sunday before armistice was signed. This was between the Seille and Moselle rivers, just beyond Pont-A-Mousson. Col.
