Letter to the Editor He Gave Oregon a Heritage of Music
THOMAS H. PARROTT, an eminent Oregon musican and teacher, was born in Hever, Kent Co., England, October 17, 1836. His parents, Samuel and Maria Everest Parrott and seven children embarking from England, landed in Oregon February 1853, while Thomas stayed to complete an apprenticeship in shoemaking. Arriving in Oregon April 1, 1857, Thomas joined his relatives on their Parrett Mountain land claim overlooking beautiful Chehalem Valley (Yamhill Co.), Oregon.1
There was little chance to make a fortune in shoemaking on Parrett Mountain so Thomas, like his father, uncles, and bothers, spent his time clearing and tilling the soil. He did not take to farming, however. From his mother's side of the family, in which notable muscicians were numerous, Thomas had inherited not just a talent but a musical ability akin to genius. He was never so happy as when caught up in the delightful world of music, in which he excelled. He joined his cousing John Everest's brass band when first arriving in the valley and played the sliding trombone.2
In 1861, Thomas married Ann Eliza Rhodes (daughter of Alphonso), and settled in a log cabin on Parrett Mountain. He continued living there for a time but became dissatisfied. He came to East Portland in 1864 and purchased a corner lot at 4th and "H" streets (now Union and Ash), where he erected the east side's sixth residence. He established his shoe business on the street level, and he and his family occupied living quarters above. He continued playing at every social occasion

THOMAS H. PARROTT
"Thomas H. Parrott, the eminent musician and teacher, who made his advent in Oregon, April 1, 1857, arriving in Portland, was born in Kent county, England, October 17, 1836. His parents, Samuel and Mariah (Everest) Parrott, were both natives of England and of English descent, his mother's family being notable musicians. In 1854, his parents and seven of their children emigrated to Oregon.
The subject of our sketch remained two years longer in England, completing his apprenticeship to the shoemaker's trade. He then followed the family to this State, where he worked for some time at his trade. He came to East Portland in 1862, when there were but three houses in the place. He then purchased a lot on the corner of Fourth and H streets, for $40, on which he erected his house and music store, where he has resided for thirty years, the property being now, in 1892, valued at $10,000.
His service as a musician became so greatly in demand that he finally gave it his entire attention, and has acted as musician for balls in several Territories and taught music for nearly thirty years. June 8, 1861, he married Miss Eliza A. Rhodes, a highly esteemed lady, and a native of Illinois, who is a daughter of Mr. A. Rhodes, a widely and favorably known Oregon pioneer of 1845. They have eight children, the eldest of whom was born in Yam Hill county, and all the others in East Portland. They are, Samuel H., Armond G., Thomas W., Walter Edward, George Clarence, Jennie L., Archie R. and Richard L. They have all been given a thorough musical education under the personal instruction of their father, and the older sons are now among the finest musicians in the city, making that their business. Two of the boys, Tom and Walter, are great ball players. Walter is playing and hired for three years at Chicago, in the National League.
The subject of our sketch can play on any instrument in a brass band and has made the teaching of those instruments a specialty, -- with violin, piano and organ. In 1889, he erected and opened his music store in East Portland, where he is handling all kinds of musical instruments, including several of the best made pianos and cabinet organs. He also keeps sheet music and instruction books, having the principal establishment of the kind in East Portland.
Besides his city property, Mr. Parrott has two farms in Yam Hill county, which he has rented.
Politically, he is independent, voting for the man who, in his opinion, is the best calculated to fill the office with ability and integrity.
He is a charter member of Multnomah Lodge, No. 1, Red Men.
His principal delight is in music, in which he excels, his ability in that direction being allied rather to genius than to talent, and which he inherits from his mother and her family, which numbers some notable musical artists. Besides he is a great sportsman, and many are the deer, bear, ducks and geese he has brought down with the gun. It does him good yet to entertain his friends as they call and spend a few hours, in rehearsing his exploits and hairbreadth escapes. He is now fifty-six years of age, and is able to, and does, bag as much game as any of the sportsmen in the vicinity where he resides."
Thomas married Ann Eliza Rhodes in 1861 in Yamhill Co., Oregon. Ann was born on 7 Mar 1846 in Fulton Co., Illinois and died on 23 Dec 1906 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, at age 60.
Children from this marriage were:

12 M iv. Jiggs Parrott was born on 14 Jul 1871 in East Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon and died on 14 Apr 1898 in Phoenix, Maricopa Co., Arizona, at age 26. Another name for Jiggs was Walter Edward Parrott.
General Notes: GREAT THIRD BASEMAN. Remains of "Jiggs" Parrott Brought Home for Burial.
Archie Parrott arrived yesterday forenoon from a hurried trip to Phoenix, Ariz., with the remains of his brother, Walter E. Parrrott, who died in the hospital at that place April 14, of edema of the lungs. The funeral of the young man will take place from the home of his parents, on East Fifteenth and East Couch streets, tomorrow at 12 M.
With the death of "Jiggs," as the deceased was familiarly known, was ended a carrer of considerable note in baseball circles of the United States. But for the fatal disease that fastened itself on his lungs about two years ago, he would dtoday probably have stood in the front ranks of the baseball fraternity in the Eastern leages. He was born in Portland, July 14, 1871, on the East Side, and his training as a baseball player beagan when he attended teh public schools of East Portland, where he attained quite a reputation by his good work with the local amateur teams. With his brother Tom, he was connected with the Willamette baseball club in 1886, a local organization, around which centered at that time much pride, and some of the members of the old club are still residents of this city. Mr. J.W. Beveridge was teh mange of the Willamettes. The local organization was dropped in 1890, when the Pacific Northwest Leage was formed. "Jiggs" Parrott, his brother, Tom, and Frank Burchiel, of the Willamettes, were signed by the Portland club. He took part in 94 games as third-baseman of the Portland club, and ranked high in the official average, in batting and fielding.
Hi excellend work led to his re-engagement for the season of 1891, when he again did splendid work at bat and in the field, anda gained such a reputation that his services became in demand by the clubs of minor leagues. His work at third base attracted the attention of visiting baseball men, and in 1892 he accepted an offer from the Minneapolis club. His departure from the Northwest baseball field left a vacancy that could not be filled. He took part in 88 championship games as third-baseman of the Minneapolis team, and the Chicago club, which was looking for a third-baseman, secured and signed him.
Anson, captain and manager of the Chicagos, formed a very high opinion of his abilities as third-baseman from the time he saw him play in that position, and it was through his efforts that "Jiggs" was transferred to the Chicago team. His work for the Chicago team at third base was exceptionally good, and his manly bearing made him friends wherever the team played. He did nto dissipate, and kept hiself free from every vice. His work was always conscientious and thorough. For a time that yera, 1893, Tom Parrott also played with the Chicagos, but was sold to the Cincinnati team, adn the two brothers became opponents. In the season of 1894 "Jiggs" was with the Chicagos, but his heavy work of the season before had begun to tell on him, and he was unable to do so good work.
The following season he was with the Chicagos, but owing to ill-health did not play very much with that team, but played some minor league teams. He was finally compelled to desist, and for over ayera he travelled about in Oregon in the hope that rest would restore him. His last trip was to New Mexico, and finally to Phoenix, Ariz., where is death occurred.

General Notes: THE PARROTT BOYS Parable of the Valorous Third Baseman and the Marvelous Twirlor.
Behold, a certain man had two sons, Tommy and Jiggs. Now Jiggs was a mighty man of valor on third base and when Tommy was the box the poeple were wont to rise up as one man and cry out, saying: "Good eye, Tommy!" and "Watch Tommy play the game!" But a certain man named Glenalvin became manager of the Portland team, and he gathered about him the fans and reporters and answered them, saying: "Go to, the Parrott boys are no good. They couldn't play in an Eastern league, and ought not to play in a Western league." And with that he laid them off. But when their time was fully come Jiggs was signed by Anson the Great, and the fame of his third base spread throughout all the borders of America, and the Chicago and Cincinnati league clubs were scrapping over Tommy. But Glenalvin was relegated to a minor league.
According to the Chicago papers, the fight over Tom Parrott is still going on. The Herald states that when the board of control had heard the testimony in his case, and had decided that as Cincinnati had paid $500 for his release, that club was entitled to the player's services, President Hart in reply sent this message:
"We refuse to abide by the decision of the board. We have a legal contract, and propose to play the man."
To President Brush at Indianapolis this message was ticked:
"We refuse to abide the decision of the board in the Parrott case, and will fight it out in the courts. In the interest of harmony, will give you McGill or Shaw if you will withdraw."
President Hart was indignant over the decision. "It was an unjust ruling," he said. "Parrott was released on June 10 and on the following day his release was sold to Cincinnati for $500. Meanwhile I had accepted his terms, and this while Linnehan sat in my office trying to strick up a sale for some of his players. Linneham made misrepresentations to the national board, which has not heard Parrott's testimony. He was working for $500, but he will not get it. I have notified Mr. Young that I would defend the case in the courts, and will play Parrott right along."
Linneham made the pleas that his clerk, through a misunderstanding of his orders, gave Parrott his release. Despite the fact taht the player was properly released, the national board decided in Linnehan's favor.

======================== 'Steadfast Kelsonian' Ernie Parrott dies Maybe Floyd Carpenter said it most succintly when describing his late friend Ernest Scott Parrott - "Ernie" to the generations who knew him - as "a steadfast Kelsonian."
"He'd done virtually everything in the city," Carpenter said of Parrott, who died on Saturday at age 90. "He was one that didn't have to be asked. Anybody that's been here for years certainly knew Ernie Parrott and respected him."
Starting with his arrival as a teen-ager in the 1920s and continuing for more than seven decades, Parrott was a local leader through community, civic, business and church groups. Among his leadership roles was a stint on the Kelso City Council. "I think he just loved his town... and he wanted to be a part of it," said his daughter, Veryl Anderson, Kelso's finance director.
"He was driving his car until about three weeks ago," Anderson said. She noted that her father broke an arm last month and only then resigned his last service position as a member of the Consolidated Diking Improvement District No. 3 board. "He went peacefully, and that is a blessing."
The only time Parrott was not active in Kelso was when he was drafted into the U.S. Army at age 34 and was sent to the East Coast during World War II. The day after he got his notice, his daughter said, the draft board lowered the maximum draft age to 28.
Among his many roles, Parrott kept active with his fellow veterans through American Legion. For decades, until just a few years ago, he played taps on his bugle at veterans' funerals in the area. "That was just his way of doing things," said Joe Halleck, a longtime friend, neighbor and fellow veteran.
Parrott spent five decades in local automobile sales and repair busineses, including his Parrott Motor Co. Halleck, a former postal employee, worked part-time selling cars for his friend. "I can't think of anybody who would be any more honest with you."
Another veteran, Hugh Ingram, agreed that Parrott's integrity was beyond question. But that didn't stop Parrott from being an ace salesman. In fact, Ingram still owns the 1962 Cadillac and the 1973 Dodge Impala that Parrott sold to him years ago. Ingram recalled Parrott summoning down to the dealership to take a look at the Dodge. Ingram didn't know he even wanted the car, but Parrott had the paperwork done when Ingram arrived. "He was a pretty good salesman," Ingram said with a chuckle.
Don Gregory, a former Kelso mayor and current City Council member, had known Parrott since attending school with daughter Veryl. "I can't think of a more contributing person to the community, a more wonderful person," he said. "The community certainly will miss a very energetic, easy-going fixture of the city of Kelson."
Gregory said Parrott always had a keen perspective on city issues but was forever the gentleman expressing his views. "He was always a source of history and a good source of wisdom," Gregory said. "If he had an issue, you really didn't hear about it ... unless you asked him. "I never heard a foul word out that man's mouth about an issue."

General Notes: Originally diagnosed as a tumor, Stanley Parrott was born in Portland, Ore., on Feb. 7, 1928, to the great relief of his parents. They were not surprised when he began playing piano, since he'd slept in a basket behind the instrument whenever the Parrott Band played. Through eighth grade, Stan, his nephews, niece and cousins attended the two-room Ladd Hill School. After leaving Newberg High, most settled near their great-grandparent's Parrott Mountain homesteads. Instead, Stan joined the Army/Air Corps at 17, serving in Japan and Korea. Back home, he worked as a railroad telegrapher until his quest for adventure led to reenlistment. While at Clarksville, Tenn., he married Mary Briggs, whom he met on a blind date. After daughter, Karleen, was born, they transferred to Sandia, N.M., where Stan worked as a radio operator until his father became ill, requiring a return to Oregon. Reenlisting in the Air Force in 1956, Stan was sent to France, where he worked on base during the week, played piano with a professional band every weekend, and welcomed the births of son Scott and daughter, Wendy. Transfers followed to Washington, Texas, Japan, and Mississippi before Stan retired at Elmendorf Air Force Base in1969. He worked throughout Alaska with the Laborer's Union, was a Charter Member of the Talkeetna VFW and served in the Alaska State Defense Force until Mary's health required a move Outside.
