Henry Blanton Parrott first appears in the written record in 1797 in Greene Co., Georgia. Based on the age of his children, Henry's birthdate has been estimated to be ~1770. His son later claimed Henry Blanton was from Maryland; there is no other documentation. Initial work on his family tree was compiled by William Houston and by Carolyn Bath, and a lot more information has been added recently. This is an attempt to collate the available information, so as to aid future research and to identify the family origins.

How Henry relates to other Parrott families has also long been a mystery. For a long time, it has been thought that Henry Blanton was related to one of the two other contemporary Parrott families in Greene county. A Y-DNA test from one of Henry Blanton Parrott's descendants shows that Henry was not related to any other Parrott family in Greene county, or for that matter, to any other Parrott family that has been Y-DNA tested. Nevertheless, Y-DNA points to Henry's origin, given it is a perfect Y-DNA (37/37) match to Flippen Y-DNA. Parrotts and Flippens had both lived in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, where other clues to to Henry's origins are found:

    • Among his children, some were named George, Dorothy, Elizabeth, and Nancy (see below for other records with these names)
    • Another descendant shares autosomal DNA with Flippens and people with Flippens in their ancestry
    • One of the two other Parrott families in Greene county came from Kingston Parish, Gloucester county via Rockingham county, NC.

With this information in mind, the Gloucester county Kingston Parish Vestry Book, 1679 - 1796 (C.G. Chamberlayne), has some entries of interest:

    • 065. 19 Nov 1764: To Thomas Newburn for a year to come Keeping Elizabeth Parrots, bastard, ---
    • 066. 28 Oct 1765: To Isabella Parrett to enable her to keep Elizabeth Parrets Child the Ensueing year 400 Tobacco -
    • 070. 23 Nov 1767: To Richard Longest for Keeping Dorothy Parrots Child the Year Last, to be paid to Revd. John Dixon 600 Tobacco:
    • 072. 12 Dec 1768: To Richard Longest for Keeping Dorothy Parets Child, 500 Tobacco
    • 074. 11 Dec 1769: To Richard Longest for Keeping Dorothy Parrets Child, to be paid to Thomas Flippen, 500 Tobacco -
    • 077. 29 Oct 1770: To Richard Longest for Keeping Dorothy Parrets Child, to be left in Church Warden's Hands, 1000 Tobacco -
    • 082. 25 Nov 1771: To Richard Longest for Keeping Dorothy Parrets Child, 500 Tobacco -
    • 085. 28 Nov 1772: To Thomas Flippen for Clearing the Parish of Nancy Parret, a Bastard Child, 500 Tobacco-
    • Richard Parrott, marries Susanna Flippin, 3 January 1762
    • George Parrott, marries Lucy Longest, 17 May 1772

Based on the timing, it is possible to assume that Nancy was the aunt, sister or sister-in-law of the Richard and George Parrott, as well as of Benjamin (b ~1730) who moved to North Carolina and then Greene Co., Georgia, which is where Henry Blanton Parrott first enters the written record.

Given the prevailing bastardy laws at the time, the weight of the evidence is that Henry Blanton may have been Nancy's child, fathered by Thomas Flippen, who had married Dorothy Brooks on 23 Feb 1769 in Gloucester Co., Virginia. Thomas & Dorothy had three children, who are listed in the Kingston Parish registry.

But, there was a fourth son, who appears in a guardianship page 1 and 2 record on 20 Apr 1790 Caswell Co., North Carolina (will book B, Pg. 332), across the county line from where Benjamin Parrott settled. "Henry Flippin, orphan son of Thomas Flippin, late of Gloucester Co., Virginia, chose Thomas Brooks as his guardian." The premise is that this Henry Flippin and Henry Blanton Parrott are the same person. Thus, 'clearing the parish' meant moving him out of the parish, and in this case, to Caswell Co., NC. If so, Henry may have named his daughter, Dorothy, after his step mother, and daughter Nancy after his birth mother.

A final clue comes from Armistead Flippens, the eldest son of Thomas Flippen and Dorothy Brookes. As determined by deeds dated 2 April 1804 pp 1 and 2, and 18 May 1811, Armistead Flippen was living in the same district of Greene county as Henry Blanton Parrott. Kingston Parish in Gloucester county, VA, seems to be the one place where Armisteads, Parrotts and Flippens crossed paths. It is a strong indication that a group of people from Kingston Parish ended up in Greene county.

Given this scenario, Henry Blanton got his Parrott surname from his mother, a member of the Lawrence Perrott group of families, though technically, he is a Flippen.

    ==========
Parrott Talk IX:87-88, 1990. Ancestors of William Henry Houston

    William Houston's notes:

Tax List: 1797 in Greene Co., Georgia.
Land Lottery: 1807 in Greene Co., Georgia. He died between 19-22 Dec 1812 in Greene Co., Georgia. His estate was probated on 22 Dec 1812 in Greene Co., Georgia.

Henry Parrott died about 1812, and Jeremiah Lumsden was appointed guardian of his five minor children on March 11, 1813. The children's mother was also deceased and their stepmother, Patsy Dolvin Parrott, whom Henry had just married, played no role in their future lives.

Guardianship records for Henry's children can be found in Will Book 2 of Jasper County, Georgia. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L93L-FLGT?mode=g&i=195&cc=1999178

Jasper county is where their guardian, Jeremiah Lumsden, moved soon after Henry's death. Descendants of Henry's son, Henry, who was less than five at the time of his father's death, recount that the family was orphaned and raised by a Presbyterian Minister. [some in Greene Co. as well].

The only record evidence for Henry's state of birth is his son Henry's statement that he was a Marylander, given to the census taker in 1880. A search of the records of the Curtis Parrott family of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia and Greene Co., Georgia (the other Parrott family in Greene county) reveal no connection to Henry Blanton Parrott.

    -----
Letter from H Joe Parrott in Parrott Talk IX:13, says that he started participating in the Georgia land lottery as early as 1803.

Henry married Wilmoth Lumsden, daughter of Jeremiah Lumsden and Elizabeth Belcher, in 1791. Wilmoth was born on 12 Aug 1779 and died on 5 Jun 1810 in Georgia, at age 30.

    Children from this marriage were:

+ 2 M    i. Obediah Belcher Parrott was born in 1792 in Greene Co., Georgia and died in 1859 in Calhoun Co., Georgia, at age 67.

3 M    ii. George W. Parrott was born on 5 May 1798 in Georgia.

    Notes: William Houston's notes:

In August, 1818 the Jasper County Superior Court filed suit against George Parrott, Jeremiah Lumsden, and Samuel Thompson to forfeit a bond of $500 each for George's failure to appear in court. It was alleged that George did, on the night of Sept. 13, 1817, enter "with force of arms" the storehouse of James Rodgers of Jasper County and steal six dollars in bank bills. Because he failed to appear in court, the state filed suit to retain the bond money. It is not known if the three men appeared in court on the third Monday in February, 1819, as ordered, to show why the bonds should not be forfeit. (See Records of Jasper County, Georgia by Robert Scott Davis, Jr.)

George received a bequest of one dollar in the will of Jeremiah Lumsden, signed in 1826, as did his brothers and sisters.

George has not been located on the census with any certainty. There is a George Parrott listed in the 1850 Census of Richmond Co., Georgia but it is almost certainly not the son of Henry Blanton. This other George W. married Margaret M. Walker, and had son Frank and daughters Sara and Margaret.

4 April 1825, Hancock County Inferior Court.
"Ordered That the sum of thirty eight dollars sixty seven & an half cents be paid to Mrs. Patience Hall for boarding George W. Parrott a criminal in Jail eighty days in the year 1824." - Hancock Co. Inferior Court Minutes 1809\endash 1833: 355.

    Notes: William Houston's notes:

James Spears may have briefly resided in Autauga Co., Alabama after leaving Harris County, Georgia in 1842, as the 1850 Census of Bradley County Arkansas shows the birthplace of his daughter Louisa as Alabama. The likelihood of a stopover in Alabama is increased as James' brother-in-law, Henry, accompanied him on his trek to Arkansas and settled near him in Bradley County.

5 F    iv. Elizabeth Ann Parrott was born ~1802 in Greene Co., Georgia. Another name for Elizabeth was Betsy.

Notes: JULIUS CZAR PARROT (1837-1913) Julius Czar Parrott, a native of the community of Parnell Springs here in Bradley County, picked up his musket in 1862 and struck out for Mississippi to join up with the Confederate Army. He served in Mississippi and was wounded in battle. After his recovery a series of events that would take him far from his home were set in motion.Julius was a part of the Confederate garrison defending Vicksburg, Mississippi, against General Grant's repeated attacks during the winter of 1862 - 63. Grant then besieged the city forsix weeks shelling it repeatedly. Julius later recalled that he and other soldiers ate mules and dogs in order to survive. When Vicksburg fell, Julius and his friend, John Moseley escaped and began the long walk back home to Bradley County. They survived on blackberries and whatever theycould forage along the road. Julius had little time to rest, however. About 14 days after arriving home, a band of Yankee soldiers who were gathering men rode onto his property. Julius saw them coming and went to the barn to get his white horse. As he was leading the horse away, the soldiers caught up with him. Julius replied that he was just going to give him some water. The soldier said, "Putyour saddle on that horse; you are coming with us." He was taken prisoner and transported byboat up the Mississippi River to a prison camp in Rock Island, Illinois. Conditions were badin the prison camp, and Julius later told family of seeing Southern prisoners dropping over dead with cholera. After he was imprisoned a year, the Northerners were asking for volunteersto guard wagon trains to the Western territories that were allied with the Union cause. Juliussaid that he might as well die fighting Indians as to die from the cholera. He rode with the wagon trains for one year, fighting off Indian attacks along the way. He later told family that they had to build their campfires with buffalo chips. When the war ended in 1865, the North presented him with an honorable discharge and allowed him to return to his Arkansas home. He also received an honorable discharge from the South. In 1866 he married his sweetheart Lucina Bledsoe. They had eight children. Julius Parrottdied at the age of 76 and is buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery in the Hollis Special community. He was the father of the late John Parrott of Warren. He is survived by his grandson Preston "Dick"Parrott of Warren and Mary Parrott Phillips of Cabot. His two other grandchildren, Gladys Parrott Carter and William Julius Parrott are deceased. He is the great grandfather of John C. Parrott of Warren; Juanita Parrott Forrest of Hermitage; Rosemary Ensign, Bobbie McDonald and Shirley Worthington, all of Hobart, Indiana; Janette Causey of Cabot, Peggy Parrott Schmidt of Portage, Indiana; and Judith Parrott Fairchild of Pittsburg, Illinois. Notes: Mrs. Nannie C. Parrott, consort of W. D. Parrott, was born in Louisiana in 1847; moved to Arkansas in 1868; was united in marriage to W. D. Parrott,
Jan. 27, 1881, and died Jan. 11, 1885. She professed religion in early life, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1869. It was my privilege during my pastorate on the New Edinburg circuit to visit her frequently at her home, where I always met with a warm Christian welcome
from her and her husband. Although she was much of the time in feeble health, I always found her cheerful and ready to minister to the necessities of friends. She was an earnest Christian woman, loving the Church and its institutions. The Church, the Sunday-school, as well as a large circle of friends and relatives, will miss her; but most of all her stricken husband, over whose life this great sorrow has cast its shadow and her step-son to whom she was indeed a mother. May they be so exorcised by this chastening that it may "yield them the peaceable fruit of righteousness."

A Double Tragedy Enacted in Cleveland County.

Clarles Parrott and the Huddleson Brothers Meet in the Woods and Settle an Old Score - The Two Latter Both Killed.

    Special to The Arkansas Gazette.
PINE BLUFF. - July 14. - News was received here this morning that Charles Parrott shot and killed C.L. and T.P. Huddleston, brothers, Saturday evening, three miles east of Orlando, Cleveland County. Both deaths were instantaneous.

This shooting is the end of a long quarrel between Parrott and the two dead men, and may be the beginning of a feud that will rival Kentucky's famous family quarrels.

Dr. W.S. Moore, Parrott's father-in-law, gives the following account of the affair:

Five years ago C.L. Huddleston, or "Cal," as he was called, worked for Parrott. In his contract with Huddleston, Parrott agreed to do his laundry for him. One day "Cal" Huddelston made a remark about the manner in which his clothes were washed. Parrott resented the complaint and finally made Huddleston leave his plantation.

Ever since that time "Cal" and his brother have been at enmity with Parrott, and many times the smouldering fires have been in danger of breaking out. Saturday afternoon Parrott and four other friends were on a hunting trip around Orlando.

The party got separated from each other. Parrott dismounted, and tying his horse at the roadside, started to go into the dense thickets at the side of the road, to rouse up game. He was about 100 yards from the horse, he says, when two horsemen came along the road. He heard one of them say: "Here is the ------------ horse; wonder where he is?" He immediately came out of the thicket and found the strangers to be the Huddleston brothers. "What do you want?" he asked them.

With an oath one of the brothers replied that they had come to "settle that matter between you and us." "You are two to one," Parrott replied. "Wait until I call my brother-in-law, who is near here, and I will whip you both, one at a time."

"Brother-in-law be ---------. Brothers-in-law are not needed. We are going to whip you."

Parrott had a double-barrelled shot gun loaded with buckshot in his hand, and warned them not to attempt it.
The brothers dismounted and advanced toward Parrott, who cocked his shot gun and awaited them.
"Drop that gun, ------ you," said one, throwing his hand behind him.

When the nearer one was within five feet of him and the other two feet further off, Parrott threw his gun the his shoulder and - bang! bang! Almost simultaneously the Huddleston brothers dropped dead, one with a gaping hole in his right breast, and the other shot through the heart. So quick was the second barrel fired after the first that persons 100 yards away imagined that but one shot had been fired.

Parrott gave hmself up to the authorities. A Coroner's Jury viewed the remains and gave permission for burial, and the two brothers were buried yesterday. The Coroner's Jury will continue the inquisition next Wednesday.

The Huddlestons are wealthy and brave men. Four brothers remain and they will press the case even to a vendetta. The Parrotts are equally desperate and rich. the fight for and against Charles Parrott will be a desperate one, in and out of the courts.

Charles Parrott is married and has several children. Neither of the dead men were married. Dr. Moore, Parrott's father-in-law, and several lawyers left Pine Bluff this morning to look after Parrott's case.

    THAT CLEVELAND VENDETTA.
A Revengeful Father May Carry the Tragedy to Further Trouble

    Arkansas Gazette Correspondence.
NEW EDINGBURGH, July 17. - the fearful tragedy enacted here on the 12th, was the outgrowth of a feud of long standing. Later particulars, as far as can be ascertained, are about as follows:

Charles Parrott, Will Martin, and a man named Childs, were out deer hunting. Parrott was standing near the public road waiting for a shot at the deer, his horse some distance away, when Calvin Huddleston and his brother came upon the horse, and knowing it to be Parrott's, rode up to it before Parrott could mount, and told him that now was a good opportunity to settle their trouble. Parrott told them if they would wait until Childs came up to see fair play, he would fight Calvin. To this Calvin Huddleston replied: "We'll not wait, but are going to give you a d--d good beating."

Parrott told them he would shoot on any attempt to approach. The Huddlestons alighted from their horse and approached Parrott on opposite sides.

When withing four feet of the gun Parrott fired on Calvin Huddeleston, shooting him directly through his heart with eighteen buckshot. He died with a struggle. He then turned and fired the contents of the other barrel into the right breast of Thomas Huddleston, killing him almost instantly.

Parrott then blew his horn for the other members of the party. When they came up he left Childs with the bodies, went to Esquire Oarten and surrendered himself and is now under arrest.

Public opinion justifies Parrott in the killing. It is feared that the vendetta is not yet ended, as all the parties are vindictive and revengeful, and the father of the dead boys has already announced that the trouble is not ended. Both o fthe Huddlestons were unmarried, while Parrott has a considerable family. All are in fair cirucumsances and the prosecution will be bitter.

    Notes: NORMA ELEANOR SCHUH
a native of the Capitol city, went to be with her many friends and family in Heaven on September 8, 2014, just nine days after celebrating her 97th birthday with her family.

Norma was born in Little Rock on August 29, 1917, to the late Fred and Nora Eleanor (Maull) Parrott. She graduated from Little Rock High School (now Central High) in 1935, just one year after her future husband, and attended Little Rock Junior College (now the University of Arkansas at Little Rock) and Draughon's School of Business.

On December 10, 1938, she married Lloyd Everett Schuh, Sr., who was then, a District Circulation Manager for the Arkansas Gazette. Since he was, at that time, working in Shreveport, Louisiana, and his father was a conductor on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, much of their courtship consisted of train rides between the two cities.

In 1948, she joined her husband Lloyd in starting a business of their own, the Art-Lloyd Advertising Company. The 68-year-old local company continues today as LSC Marketing & LSC Promotional Marketing. But her most important and rewarding career was being a great Mother to her three sons and their families over the next 75 years.

Norma was active in local garden clubs, served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Homeroom Mother at her sons' elementary schools. Her love of a good joke was legendary, and even at 97 she still remembered the words and could sing dozens of songs from the Forty's and Fifty's from memory. Her sons are grateful to carry on her great sense of humor via puns, one-liners, and practical jokes.

The couple had three sons, Lloyd Everett Schuh, Jr., (Shirlene Howard) of Houston, Texas, Jacob Hixson Reser, and Charles Scott Schuh (Amy) of Little Rock. She is survived by five loving grandchildren, Douglas R. Schuh, of Little Rock, Todd Alan Schuh (Danette), Christopher Howard Schuh, Andrew Clayton Schuh (Jessica) and Laura Schuh Vick (William); and two great-grandchildren, twins Bryan and Brianna Schuh all of Houston, Texas.

The family would especially like to thank those who have helped to care for her and make her life more enjoyable during the past few years … Lois, Tiffany, Kay, Dee, Deidre, & Tara. We also appreciate the caring members of the Baptist Hospice team. Memorials may be sent to the UALR Alumni Association, 2801 S. University, Little Rock, Ark. 72204.

Beloved, kind & gentle Mother … we will deeply miss you.

There will be a visitation at Ruebel Funeral Home on Saturday, September 13, 2014, from 1 to 2 p.m. with a graveside service immediately following at Roselawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home, www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

A New Variety Of Cotton for Use in Oklahoma
    --------------
"Parrott" Seed Supply May Be Available for Farm Planting in 1957.

Stillwater, OK.- "Parrott" is a new variety of cotton released a few days ago by the Oklahoma A. and M. agricultural experitment station.

It is especially suitable for hand harvest by snapping. it has outyielded other stripper varieties in four Western Oklahoma tests in the last three years.

    Seed Is Limited
College agronomists said that a limited amount of seed for farm planting may be available in the spring of 1956. Most of the 1955 crop will go to certified seed growers. If weather is favorable, an adequate supply of certified seed for farm planting will be available in the spring of 1957.

The new variety is named after the late I.M. "Polly" Parrott, who at the time of his death in 1951 was superintendent of A. and M.'s cotton research station in Chickasha. It was tested under the designation "CR-3."

Parrott in 1940 selected the original plant of CR-3 from a field of Mebane 140 at A. and M.'s Southwest cotton station near Tipton. He continued work with progeny of this plant until 1950. Selection after 1950 was by members of the present A. and M. cotton improvement staff headed by Dr. John M. Green.

In eight stripper-harvested tests in Western Oklahoma during 1952 and 1953, including an irrigated test at Altus, the new variety averaged 477 pounds of line per acre. In the same tests, Lockett No. 1 yielded 448 pounds and Lankart 57 averaged 389 pounds. The respective field losses were 12.4, 11, and 11.3 per cent. Lint percentages were 28.9, 27.1, and 28.3, collectively.

In dryland tests in Western Oklahooa during 1949, 1952 and 1953, CR-3 or Parrott averaged 317 pounds lint per acre, compared with 294 for Lockett No. 1, 269 pounds for Lankart 57, 269 pounds for Northern Star, and 311 pounds for Lockett 140.

    Eastern Oklahoma Trials.
In Eastern Oklahoma veriaty trials in 1952 and 1953, Parrott averaged 547 pounds of link per acre. In the same trials, Stoneville 62 yielded 555 pounds, Deltapine 15 averaged 525 pounds, D. & P L Fox 534 pounds, and Empire 541 pounds.

Lint length is 29/32 of 15/16 inch under most conditions. For spinners, Parrott provides a fiber that is better than other recommended spinner varieties in coarseness. A coarse fiber is wanted by spinners in the staple lengths grown in Oklahoma. The lint has the same length and strength as Lockett No. 1, and the yarn is equally acceptable in strength and appearance.

96 F    i. Sue Ellen Parrott was born on 13 Sep 1940 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas and died on 16 Oct 2020 in Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, at age 80.

Notes: Sue Ellen Parrott, age 80, formerly of Potomac, MD, died peacefully on October 16th, 2020 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Daughter of Fred and Josephine (Deal) Parrott, Sue Ellen was born in Little Rock, AR, on September 13th, 1940. Sue Ellen lived a fortunate and meaningful life defined by her passion for the arts and intellectual pursuits, commitment to service, and limitless love and devotion to friends and family.

Sue Ellen and her younger brother, Fred Parrott Jr., shared many happy times with loving parents and extended family in Arkansas. From an early age, Sue Ellen proved herself to be an exceptional student with a particular interest in the arts. She attended Little Rock Central High and was a senior during the historic integration of the "Little Rock Nine." Bearing witness to the racism and division in her community inspired her to speak out against injustice and celebrate diversity throughout her life. As an outstanding student, she was awarded a Seven Sisters full scholarship to Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA. This prestigious scholarship transformed her life. She flourished in the intellectual community of Wellesley, where she excelled academically and built enduring friendships.

After graduation, she moved to Cambridge, MA, and worked at the Charles Playhouse. It was in Cambridge that she met her former husband, Marcus Sisk, while he was attending Harvard Law School. The couple married in 1964. They lived and worked initially in Washington, DC, and then in American Samoa, where they grew to love the Samoan people. After traveling extensively in the South Pacific, Asia, and Europe, the couple returned to Washington, DC, where Sue Ellen worked for Sargent Shriver at the Office of Economic Opportunity.

The couple later moved to Potomac, MD. Sue Ellen devoted herself fully to raising her two daughters, Mary Jo and Erin. She provided constant love and support, and gave her children the best educational and cultural opportunities available. At the same time, she prioritized giving back to her community. She volunteered in her daughters' schools and in the Washington Wellesley Club. She was active in the Washington Wellesley Club for many years, serving in various roles, including president, and raising scholarship funds for deserving Wellesley students from the DC area.

She enjoyed painting, collecting sea shells, and exploring art museums. In the warmer months, she was often in her yard, tending to flowers, herbs, and vegetables which she loved to share with her neighbors. She adored the family cats, and animals in general. She read the newspaper from cover to cover daily. She took a genuine interest in people from all walks of life.

After her children left for college, Sue Ellen pursued politics professionally, first as the office manager for the League of Women Voters, Montgomery County chapter, then as administrator at the Trilateral Commission. At the commission, she particularly enjoyed working with her intellectually curious colleagues and traveling the globe for conferences. Sue Ellen and Marc divorced, and she fully embraced life on her own terms. She moved into a beautiful new home in Potomac filled with the art she collected from her world travels. She enjoyed frequent visits with her friends and daughters, and volunteered at the National Zoo.

After more than 40 years of living in the Washington area, Sue Ellen spent her retirement in the Boston area to be near her daughters and grandchildren. In her final years of life, she lived at Goddard House in Brookline, MA and Newbridge on the Charles in Dedham, MA. In spite of the challenges of living with Parkinson's disease, she never lost her warm personality or her ability to connect meaningfully with the people around her. She was an inspiration and a source of great joy to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her devoted daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Jo Sisk and David Grossman of Newton; Erin and Jared Hawkins of Westwood; and her beloved grandchildren: Will, Carina, Luke, and Michaela Grossman; Owen and Aria Hawkins. She was a loving sister to her late brother Fred and sister-in-law Norma Parrott, as well as a caring aunt to her niece, Michelle Parrott. She was loved deeply by her family and many friends who will miss her dearly.
