This one family appears to have the greatest number of descendants in the US, where it probably accounts for an estimated 2 out of every 10 current Parrott individuals in the US. A partial list of known descendants over the past 4 centuries has been compiled, though living individuals have been excluded. This family originated in Boston and Potton, in Bedfordshire, and settled in Middlesex county, Virginia, in the mid 1600's.

There is more myth and misinformation around Richard Perrott, the family patriarch, than around any other Parrott. All trees to the contrary, Richard was not the son of John & Prunella Parrott, or of Sir John Perrot, or of James & Dorothy Parrott. He was baptized on 10 Feb 1621/22 in Potton, Bedfordshire, England, to Thomas and Margaret Parratt. Richard was a vestryman of Christ Church, a Commissioner of Lancaster Co. in 1656, elected High Sherriff on 5 June 1657 and Senior Justice of Middlesex County Court from 1673 until his death. He did not bear arms- with 3 pears or otherwise. Many reports to the contrary, Richard was not related to other contemporary Parrotts in Maryland and Virginia (such as Francis, Lawrence, and William). Also contrary to many published reports, the weight of the evidence is that Richard only had one child, Richard Jr., and only married twice.

Descendants of Richard Perrot of Middlesex Co., Virginia

    • 43755. Descended from Richard Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » John (married to Ruth) » James » John Sr » John II b 1859, San Francisco. John Sr. was the US consul in Mazatlán from 30 December 1837 to 9 April 1850, barring an interruption during the Mexican-American war. He moved to California, where his descendants became prominent vinters and bankers.

    • 200428. Descended from Richard Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James » Reuben » Josiah » Jeremiah Sylvester » Reuben Elijah » Barney Robert. The descent of Josiah from Reuben remains somewhat speculative, but circumstance of time and space limits other candidates besides Reuben. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 76504. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Joel » Armstead, b 1766, VA. Current spelling = Parrett.
    • 33601. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Joel » Reuben, b 1787, VA. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 361739. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott »? The paper trail goes back to John Allen in Rutherford Co., NC, born 1755. The paper trail is bolstered by a value of 16 at marker 464c, which is only shared with the only other Reuben descendant who has tested. Current spelling = Allen.
    • 112005. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Joel » Elijah, b ~ 1784, VA. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 62651. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Lewis, b 1755, VA. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • N45879. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Lewis, b 1755, VA. Current spelling = Poole.
    • 911611. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » Thomas, b 1744, VA » John, b 1777 in SC » William J(ohn), b 1849 in GA » William H, b ~1865 » Nathan F » Joseph J ». The family ended up in Quitman, GA, and from there ended up in both Lowndes county GA and Columbia county FL. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 57820. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Curtis Sr. » John. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 524696. Descended from Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Curtis Sr. » Curtis Jr. » John » Jesse » William B. » Wilson Helfin; This family settled in Fayette Co., Georgia. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 44426. Descended from John Parrott, b 1777 in SC. Current thought is that John's line of descent is Richard Perrot Sr. » Richard Jr. » Robert » James Parrott » John. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • 51953. Descended from Parrott/Periot Pringle, b March 1719 in Middlesex Co., Virginia to Ann Pringle. Current speculation is that Parrott's line of descent is Richard Parrott Sr. » Richard Parrott Jr. » Richard Parrott III + Ann Pringle » Parrott H. » Parrott R. » Jonathan » Asa Monroe » John Henry ». Current spelling = Pringle.
    • B176821. Descended from James Nelson Parrott, b ~1856 in Stewart Co., Tennesee. The paper trail still has gaps. Current speculation is that this line is related to the other Parrotts in Stewart and Houston counties in Tennessee. The origins of this latter group remain unknown. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • The following are descended from Nathaniel Parrott, thought to be the grandnephew of Richard Perrott.

    • 182722. Descended from Thorp Parrott b ca 1764, Virginia - d Jan. 1850 in Marshall Co., Alabama » William Louis Parrott b ca 1810 in Smith County, Tenn - d 17 Sept., Marshall Co. Alabama » Rufus Berry Parrott (b 4 Feb. 1833, Red Hill, Marshall County, Alabama)

    • 258360. Descent is not clear. Earliest known ancestor is Amos Parrott (Parrat, Parrett) who was born in Claiborne, County Mississippi, about 1844. Census records list his father as being from Virginia.
    • 22953. Descended from Luke Parrott born about 1776 in VA. It is unknown how this branch fits in with the rest of the family, though the current thinking is explained in the diagram below. Current spelling = Parrott.
    • The following, while related to the family on paper, represent other DNA types that entered the family lines and thus acquired the Parrott surname:

    • N103184. This line traces back to Micajah 'Jack' who was born posthumously, so his origin had always been in question. Based on DNA, his most likely father was a Dixon, particularly since there were Dixons at the time in the Granville/Person counties area.
    • 235144. Earliest known ancestor is Lewis Parrott, who is described as a 'foundling,' born in Halifax, Virginia about 1840. He appears to have taken his name from other Parrotts in the county.

How the tested Parrotts relate to each other

The diagram below illustrates the way the various individuals from this family and that have had their Y-DNA tested are related. Solid lines indicate known relationships; dashed lines indicate probable relationships; orange lines could use documentation. Blue boxes/lines never used the Parr-tt surname, but have Parrott Y-DNA. Gray boxes still use the Parrott surname, but have other Y-DNA.

The origin of Nathaniel Parrott has long been a mystery, as has the origin of Luke Parrott. A "Delivered to Luke Parrott" notation on the left margin (see photo, below) on a deed probated in Pittsylvania county on 16 January 1786, whereby Thorpe Parrott is selling land to his father Nathaniel, suggests Luke is of that family; DNA also shows him related to Richard of Middlesex. The first Nathaniel is not the right age to be a grandson or great-grandson of Richard, making it most likely that Nathaniel is descended from Richard's brother, Robert.

Robert has been a bit of mystery, and there is only one known reference to his existence: On a deed dated 4 January 1672, whereby Richard Perrot of Middlesex County gent., specifies that "... and in case of no issue [my lands] go to my brother Robert Parrott, two eldest sons and their heirs." He also appears in the will of Richard & Robert's brother, John Perrot, merchant of London, dated 1665. John left a similar bequest to Robert's two eldest sons, and appointed him executor.
