Obit from The Wichita Times, 13 Mar 1897: Partially reprinted in PSOC 2011 28(June):34-35 and fully reprinted in Herrman-Reynolds-Liming-McFerron No. 2 Ancestry tree by Gary Herrman:
"Matthew Parrott was born in Chatteras on the Isle of Ely in the county of Cambridges in the Kingdom of England, 10 Oct 1822, and died February 20th 1897, aged 74 years 4 months and 10 days. His boyhood, youth and first few years of married life were spent in the country of his birth. His father died when he was only 10 years old. He served an apprenticeship in the Bonfield bakery but never worked at the business in later life. On 27 Aug 1843 he married Elizabeth Peters, under the rites of the church of England, and for nearly 54 years they journeyed hand in hand sharing alike in sunshine and shadow the joys and sorrows of life. To this union were born eight children, of whom five survive him, Mrs. Jennie Spaulding of Ind., John S., Joseph P., Matthew J. Parrott and Mrs. Libb. A. Edkins, residing in Wichita. In 1847 with his wife and daughter Jennie (still living), he sailed for America and landed at New Orleans, La., after a sea voyage of seven weeks and three days.
"His next move was to Cleveland, Ohio, where he engaged in farming which was his favourite vocation. From there he moved with his family, and four children, to Evansville, Ind., in 1856, when that country was still new, where he remained for nearly 20 years; and engaged in farming excepting from 1861 to 1865. In 1861 when <missing text> for volunteers he enlisted in Co. A, 42nd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and on January 1st 1864 re-enlisted for another three years or the duration of the war.
"He was severely wounded at Resaca, Georgia, in one of the hottest fought battles of the campaign, a large musket ball went crushing through his right arm near the shoulder, tearing away part of the shoulder and shattering the bone in his arm from his shoulder for five inches down his arm. On being examined by the surgeons at the hospital decided that the arm should be amputated at the shoulder joint to save his life, but having such a horror of having it amputated, and being disfigured for life, he decided to take his chances rather than to be disfigured and as a result he died 33 years later with the useless member attached to his body.
"From the day of being wounded for nearly a year he lay in the hospital and on 2 Mar 1865 he was honourably discharged by reason of surgeon's certificate of total disability. Physically unfit to enter or re-enlist even in V. R. corps. In November, 1876, he came to Wichita, Kansas where he lived until his death, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. In 1859 he united with the Methodist Episcopa church and became a communicant of the First M.E. church in this city. In his intercourse with people and in his business relations he was social, honorable and true. A man of decided character and strong personality he met the duties and obligations of life in a brave and manly way. Rather of quiet disposition he was known, only to his intimate friends, as, one of the most genial and interesting of men. He was well informed on all events of the day and his memory was stored with reminiscences both instructive and pleasing. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and valued his connection therewith as one of the chief enjoyments and pride in life. He is with us no more. He has answered the last roll call on earth, and when the last beat sounded he was ready to enter the dark valley - knowing that he was sure of sailing out on the sea of eternity with anchor and ballast to guide him safely through the swelling billows until he landed on the shore where is built the golden city of our hopes. Mathew Parrott our fellow citizen, our neighbor, our comrade is with us no more forever here on earth, but his soul is with the redeemed and his seat at the right hand of Him who is clothed in beauty and reigns King of Glory. Matthew Parrott, is dead, yet he liveth and to his loving wife and children we say you will meet him again where there is no sickness, no wounds, no death but where all is peace, joy and music. Friends! Find consolation in the fact that sweetest memories of husband, of father, will be growing fragrant plants along the stream of grief flooding your pathway along life's journey. Yes, while memory is the only plant your grief can call its own - remember you will again greet him clothed in the robes of immortality, where God and his angels dwell." -end of transcription-
Gary Herrman adds: "The 43nd Indiana was part of the Army of the Cumberland. Based on Regimental History of the 42nd Indiana, Matthew Parrott would have fought in the battles at Fort Perry, Kentucky; Chickamauga, been under siege at Chattanooga, and fought at Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Resaca, Georgia where he was wounded. He is buried in Wichita, Sedgewick County, Kansas."
Matthew married Elizabeth Peters. Elizabeth was born on 25 Aug 1824 in Petersburg, England and died on 15 Feb 1913 in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., Kansas, at age 88.
Marriage Notes: A GOLDEN WEDDING.
Last Sunday there was enacted in this city as pretty a scene as ever fails to the lot of man to witness. On Sunday, August 27, 1843, at Chatteras, Cambridgeshire, England, Mathew Parrott was married to Miss Elizabeth Peters. On Sunday, August 27, 1893, they celebrated their golden wedding - fifty years of married life, with not a jar in all that long period of time; a half a century.
Three years after their marriage they came to America, landing in New Orleans in 1846. In 1849, they located at Cleveland, O., and in 1856 they moved to Evansville, Ind. In 1861 Mr. Parrott heard that mighty tumult that shook this government from center to circumference, and after talking the matter over with his wife they concluded that it was his duty to help defend his adopted country from rampant treason, and on the 12th day of September he enrolled himself a member of company A, Forty-second Indiana Infantry. At the end of his three years to be re-enlisted, and not until his arm was shot and became perfectly useless, as it is today, did he cease his service. This last wound he received with Sherman's army at Resaca. In 1876 he removed to Wichita, where he has since lived, one of her most respected citizens. Mr. Parrott has a beautiful home on Water street, where he is often surrounded by his children and grandchildren, happy and contented as a man would want to be. It was into this beautiful home that Mr. Parrott invited his friends last Sunday to be with him on this golden occasion.
Rev. N.E. Harmon in a very feeling address congratulated the couple on the happy event, and whished them God-speed on their Journey. Mr. and Mrs. Parrott live very serene and happy lives, both being members of the Methodist church. After Mr. Harmon's address the children passed along, the oldest first, and congratulated their father and mother. Then the grandchildren, and last and least the great-grandchildren. It was a sight never to be forgotten to see those grown men and women hugh and kiss their mother and father with such tender and sincere affection. The couple have reason to be proud of their chilren.
Following are the names of those present:
Children in order of age - Mrs. I.B. Conkle, of Evansville, Ind.; John S. Parrott, Joseph P. Parrott, Matt J. Parrott, of Wichita, Kan.; Mrs. L.A. Benjamin, of Pueblo, Col.

Marriage Notes: RECOGNIZES SWEETHEART THOUGH FACE FORGOTTEN Joseph Parrott soon persuades playmate of school days to become wife.
Evansville, Ind. Sept. 12. - At St. James' Methodist Episcopal church, where they attended Suday-school together forty years ago, Joseph Parrott, aged 50 years, of Wichita, Kan., and Mrs. Penelope Riggs, aged 45 years, of this city, were united in marriage to-night in the presence of a large crowd of friends and relatives. The romance of school days reached its culmination after the couple had been separated for years and after each had been married once. As childhood sweethearts the two went to school together. after their school days Mr. Parrott went to Wichita, where he prospered and is now a prominent business man.
A few days ago Mr. Parrott returned to Evansville after an absence of thirty years. He was at the home of his brother-in-law, Robert J. Hyde, at 1615 Main street, and was sitting in th front yard when Mrs. Riggs, for several years a widow, came down the street. Her face was forgotten, but her walk still lingered in Parrott's mind. He accosted her and found that she was his childhood sweetheart, then Miss Woods. He called her at home later and the old courtship was resumed. The first wife of Mr. Parrott died several years ago and the first husband of Mrs. Riggs has been dead a number of years. The wedding ceremony to-night was performed by the Rev. G.L. Conway. Mr. and Mrs. Parrott will leave in a few days for their home in Wichita.
