She served as Secretary and member of the Avondale Borough Sewer Authority from 1971to 1984 and was Republican Committee person for over 30 years. Madeline was elected Avondale Borough Tax Collector in 1965 and held the position until 2009. She lived in the same house in the Borough of Avondale for 63 years. She was a member of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church in Avondale. Survivors include her son, Charles Nicotera and his wife Charlotte of West Grove; her daughter, Elaine Donofrio and her husband, Tony of Kennett Square; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Charles and Earl Parrott and her sisters, Florence Gillespie and Helen Downing. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2010 at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church, 8910 Gap Newport Pike (Rt. 41), Avondale, PA 19311. Mrs. Thelma L. (Parrott) McGloin 101 years old, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at the North End Rehabilitation and Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late John P. McGloin.
Born on October 16, 1907, Mrs. McGloin lived in Lynn most of her life and attended Lynn Schools. She was the daughter of the late Ralph and Louise Parrott. She had five siblings and leaves her youngest brother, Stanley W. Parrott of Lynn, MA, whom she dearly cherished.
She was a homemaker and also worked as a bookkeeper at Boston Mirror Company.
Mrs. McGloin's faith was her anchor. All of her life, she was an active member of the Washington Street Baptist Church in Lynn. She was a gifted pianist who loved to play the piano, cook and read.
A young widow raising four children, Mrs. McGloin was a loving and devoted mother to: Attorney John P. McGloin (deceased), Robert S. McGloin (deceased), Janet E. Fichera (deceased) and Kathleen A. McGloin Tedesco of Boston. She leaves a devoted daughter-in-law, Sharon Murphy McGloin of Lynn, sons-in law, Joseph A. Tedesco of Boston and Concetto J. Fichera of Derry NH, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Service Information: Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Washington Street Baptist Church, Lynn.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Friday from 5-8 p.m. in the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt 129) Lynn. Mrs. Moody was a member of the Washington Street Baptist Church while residing in Lynn.
Her favorite pastimes included cooking, oil painting, making all types of clothing and creating arts and craft items.
She leaves a son, Glenn L. Moody and his wife Dolores S. Moody of Attleboro; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Thelma McGloin of Lynn; a brother, Stanley Parrott of Lynn; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Adelbert Parrott and Glennie Wetterberg.

When he was small boy he said he would have railroad and point the cars yelllow-and so he did- hands out advice to young men.
"If I ever get to be head of a railroad I'll paint all the cars yellow," said a small boy in Oxford, Me., years ago.
It seemed to him that it was nothing but a dream. He had all the ladder of life to climb, from the bottom to the top. But Joseph R. Parrott has just succeeded in climbing it. He has just been elected President of the Florida East Coast Railway, and now the cars will be yellow. But it was no easy climb- this road to success, says the World.
This dream took the boy first to college, where he stood high in his studies, besides rowing on the varsity crew. Then his paths led to Jacksonville, Fla., where he set up modest little law office. He got charge of some damage suits against the railroad there and did so well that by 1889 he became general counsel for the consolidated lines. When a receivership was demanded Mr. Parrott became receiver. Then he became vice-president and general counsel for the Florida Southern.
When Henry M. Flager, the Standard Oil magnate, got control of the Florida railway situation, Mr. Parrott became his right hand man. Finally came Mr. Flager's idea of an "ocean-going railroad" -the Key West extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, one of the most difficult undertakings ever attempted in the line of railway construction. But the end is in sight and the completed line will be opened next winter. And Mr. Parrott has achieved his boyhood ambition; he has climbed to the head of a railroad and he can paint the cars any color he pleases. What is more, he now has his officies at No. 26 Broadway, home of the Standard Oil. So he is qualified to speak a word on success.
"It's all well enough to fix your eyes on some distant goal with the determination to reach it," he said.
"That may help some, if one has the grit to stick to it and not be discouraged when the goal seems to get further and further away instead of nearer. Anyhow, it does no harm in a boy. But in a young man who has achieved the serious responsibility of a job it's much more important to do a day's work, or a little more, every day, than to think about some ambition that may be realized years in the future.
"It is the young man who keeps up with the boss, or a little ahead of him, who wins out in the end. The showy qualities of the 'brilliant' young man haven't much chance against the steady plugging of the hard worker under modern conditions of business.
"That's the best general recipe for success that I know - hard work and a steady pace. Next to that I should say that this is the day of the specialist in everyline of business. The man who knows one thing better than any one else is pretty sure to win out in this particular line."
"Isn't that statement inconsistent with the variety of your own interests?" was asked. "You run a railroad, steamships, hotels, land companies and possibly other industries."
"Not at all, not at all," said Parrott. "They are all part of one business- necessary, closely related parts. But that suggests another point The man who administers any large business enterprise today must possess organizing ability. He must be able to attach to him men who will render faithful and efficient service whether anybody is keeping tabs on them or not. This is really the chief factor in distinguishing men who are successful in a large way from others of equal intelligence and industry who never get quite to the top.
"But I don't want to deliver a sermon on the subject of success in life, which has been discussed by many ohter men more ably than I can do it. I simply want to avoid encouraging young men to dream about their future achievements when they ought to be selling goods or adding up columns of figures. It is all right for the boy to dream - after his chores are done. He'll do it, anyway. But when he was grown up and has connected with a job it is time to cut out the dreams and get down to the tacks."

Joseph R. Parrott (1859 - October 13, 1913)
Joseph R. Parrott was born in Oxford, Maine on Oct 30, 1859. His father was a Maine woolen manufacturer. He graduated from Phillips Exeter. He was a graduate of Yale University Law School with and A.B. Degree and an LL.B degree. While his undergraduate record was undistinguished he graduated cum laude from Yale Law school. He was a member of the skull and bones society at Yale.
Parrot wanted to work in Atlanta but chose Jacksonville when Atlanta didn't work out. He started as a lawyer for the Jacksonville, Tampa, Key West System in the law firm of Duncan Fletcher. In 1890 he became involved with Flagler. He was hired as a lawyer for the Flagler system. In 1892 he became vice-president of the short-line railroad and by 1899 he was vice-president and general manager of the Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway. He later became a receiver for the railroad. His wife was Helen L. Mercer from New Haven Connecticut.
He was also president of the Florida East Coast Hotel Company. Three years before Flagler's death he was named vice president of all Flagler corporations.
In 1909 he became the president of the Flagler system after Flagler retired. Flagler urged the company to continue with Parrott in charge of the railway after his (Flagler's) death. Parrott was an active pallbearer at Flagler's funeral and received $100,000 in Flagler's will. He was one of the three trustees to carry out Flagler's will.
Unfortunately, Parrott only lived a five months after Henry Flagler. He died of an illness while at his home in Maine. His early death became a rather difficult problem because of the amount of trust that Flagler had placed in Parrott. He was the executive head of Flagler's vision in Florida after Flagler's death.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA., April 12.- The directors of the Florida East Coast Railway in annual meeting elected J.R. Parrott president to succeed H.M. Flager, who still retains the position of chairman of the board of directors. Mr. Parrott has been first vice-president of the road, and has had general charge and supervision of the sea-going extension. Mr. Parrott will continue as general manager of the road.

Joseph Robinson Parrott, ' 83 and' 85 L., died suddenly from heart trouble in Oxford, Maine, on October 13. The son of George J. and Mary S. (Robinson) Parrott, he was born, October 30, 1858, at Oxford. Maine. He was prepared at Phillips Academy, Andover, and in college was captain of the Class Football Team, on the Class Crew, and was a member of the University Crew for six years. His societies were Delta Kappa, Hé Boulé, Delta Kappa Epsilon, and Skull and Bones. Upon graduation from the College, he entered the Yale Law School, where he was graduated two years later. He commenced his professional work in Jacksonville, Fla., and by 1888 had become counsel for the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railroad. In 1890 he became associated with Mr. Henry M. Flager in the development of Florida resources by the introduction of the railroads, the building of towns and the creation of the largest hotel system in America. He was made vice president of the Florida & East Coast Railway and soon afterward undertook the building of the railroad across the water and the Florida Keys to Key West. On the completion of this immense engineering feat, his health was undermined, but through medical aid both in this country and abroad, his recovery was considered complete. After Mr. Flager's death, he acted as executor and trustee of his fortune, becoming president of the railway in 1909, and also of the Peninsula & Occidental Steamship Company, the Florida East Coast Hotel Company, the Fort Dallas Land Company, and the Model Land Company. He was also a director of two banks and one newspaper, chairman of the trustees of the Carnegie Library at Jacksonville and prominent in many other organizations. He married on October 2, 1886, Helen L. Mercer of New Haven, Conn., who with their daughter, survives him.

OXFORD, Maine, Oct. 13. -- J.R. Parrott, president of the Florida East Coast railroad, died in his summer camp here tonight of angina pectoris. During the day Mr. Parrott was apparently in normal health. He had been closely associated with the late H.M. Flagler in the railroad and hotel business.

Another man on whom Flagler depended heavily in Florida was Joseph R. Parrott. Whereas Andrew Anderson was his closest personal friend, Parrott became perhaps his closest business associate. A native of Oxford,Maine, Parrott became interested in the South through his association with Georgia-born, S. Price Gilbert, one of his classmates at Yale. Parrott entered the Yale law school in 1883, graduating in 1885. He was very popular and won recognition both in scholarship and athletics. He was a member of the varsity crew and though usually a little over weight, he was very athletically inclined. During his years at Yale he heard his Georgia friend, Gilbert, comment most fondly and favorably upon the South, particularly Georgia. Parrott was soon captivated by these stories and before he graduated he made several attempts to find legal connections in Atlanta, but was unsuccessful. Gilbert had made his connections before he entered Yale, and was therefore in no position to extend Parrott an invitation to join him in a law part nership in the Georgia capital.
"Polly" Parrott, as he was affectionately called, did not give up the idea of coming South, and with the help of Gilbert carefully studied the possibilities of the legal profession in several southern towns. Jacksonville was the final selection, mainly because of Duncan U. Fletcher, a young lawyer who lived there, whom Gilbert had known in undergraduate school at Vanderbilt University. After all, Jacksonville sounded as good as Atlanta to Parrott-he was mainly interested in coming South. The young lawyer arrived in Jacksonville in June, 1885, with very little more in his pocket than a letter of introduction which Gilbert had given him to Duncan Fletcher.
Parrott gave early evidence of distinguishing himself in the law profession. His first experience with railroads came after he had practiced law for a short time when he was retained as attorney for the Jacksonville, Tampa, and Key West Railroad. Shortly afterwards the railroad became bankrupt and Parrot was appointed one of
the receivers, doing an exceptionally good job in view of the fact the road was in such bad financial shape. In the early eighteen nineties he attracted Flagler's attention with his keen legal mind, his aggressiveness, and his ability to get things accomplished. Within a short time he was asked to join the Flagler enterprises as a lawyer.
For many years Parrott served as the head of Flagler's legal department. He became one of Flagler's right hand men and as time passed he was given more and more authority. In 1899, he became a sort of executive officer for Flagler with the title of general manager, being given the responsibility of all the developments which were then under way. In this position he proved that he had no match as a master of detail. His executive ability was in a great measure responsible for the success of the East Coast undertakings.
In a few years, Parrott was promoted to the vicepresidency; and then in 1909, when Flagler gave up the presidency of all of his enterprises and became chairman of the board, the presidential mantle fell upon the shoulders of Parrott. It was he, more than anyone else, who pushed the work on the overseas extension to a successful completion. Like Flagler, he knew no such word as failure. When Flagler died in 1913, Parrott remained as president of all the corporations and was at the same time made one of the three trustees of the estate. The Flagler-Parrott combination was a perfect functioning team, working as harmoniously as any two men could. Parrott's death came less than a year after that of his partner.

It is trite saying, that the best products of Maine are her men and women. Certain it is, they are to be found in every state of our Union, to say nothing of lands beyond d the seas, and many of them have won success in various
walks of life. One of these, the subject of this sketch, Joseph Robinson Parrott, has had a prominent part in one of the greatest and most picturesque engineering
feats of the age.
In the western part of the state is an irregular parcel of land given to Alexander Shepard, Jr. of Newton, in early days when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
was rich in land, but poor in purse, for making a map of the then District of Maine.
It was called Shepardsfield Plantation. Mr. Shepard was, perhaps a better cartographer than colonizer, for he died insolvent. After his death quite a portion of the original grant was sold to Andrew Craigie, apothecary general of the Revolutionary War, whose home in Cambridge, the old Vassal house, is well known to tourists, as the headquarters of Washington during the siege of Boston, and later as the home of the poet Longfellow. He was an ambitious man and not only encouraged agriculture in his Maine domain but manufacturing. He dammed the outlet of Lake Thompson, put in grist and lumber mills, and had his dream of making woolen and cotton cloth. It is this connection that the subject of this sketch comes in.
In 1792, Shepardfield Plantation was incorporated as the town of Hebron. In 1829, Hebron was divided, the western part becoming the town of Oxford. It was named in honor of the newly formed county in which it was situated, and which General David Learned, of Livermore, the first sheriff, christened after his old home in Massachusetts. Oxford contains the outlet of Lake
Thompson and the village of Oxford, first known as Craigie's Mill, and where the woolen industry of the town is situated.
Cloth-making began in Oxford as early as 1825, but was not in a prosperous condition continuously. Several of the mills burned and the personality of the firms operating them changed several times. About 1850, Joseph
Robinson, a native of Hunslett, England, and expert dyer, took an interest in the business, and from that day to the present it prospered.
Mr. Robinson had not only followed his trade in England before coming to America, but also in Germany. He had a large family of children, born in the several countries in which he had resided. It was his joke that he had Englishmen, Germans, and Americans in his family, to say nothing of one daughter who nationality he did not know, having been born on the high seas. His oldest daughter, Mary, married George J. Parrott, and overseer in his mills, and their eldest son Joseph, born October 30, 1858, is the subject of this sketch.
Young Parrott's childhood was passed in the environment of a New England manufacturing village of half a century ago. He played about his grandfather's mill, and as a result of early investigation with machinery, carried one finger with the final phalange missing to the grave. He went to the village schools, The educational advantages were those of the "Little red schoolhouse" (It was a brick structure in Oxford). The curriculum consisted mostly of the three R's. Thoroughness was the prevailing note. Pupils could not help being thorough, for each term they began at the preface of their text-books and continued until the close of the term, the amount covered depending largely on the length of the term. There was no choice of subjects. It was the same thing over and over.
Some excellent teachers occupied this little brick schoolhouse, and one of them was, perhaps, of greater assistance to rural schools in Maine, and to young Parrott, than any other man --Sidney Perham, one time governor of the state. The free high school law, whereby every little village can have its high school, was a pet scheme of his.
Oxford was among the first towns to adopt the free high school system, and the first high school was opened in the fall of 1875. Mr. Parrott and the writer were among the students. The fathers and mothers of the town were some time in deciding what studies the new high school would teach. Some thought it was simply and extension of the common school system to which a pupil of any degree of proficiency might attend; and others that it should be devoted entirely to higher studies. Some thought it should be a fitting school for college, and others that its course of study should be wholly English. As there were but few pupils in town fitted to enter a high school of any sort, there was a compromise. Several classes of grammar grade were formed and those who desired to study anything higher were permitted to do so. It was several years before anything like regular courses of study were arranged or the terms of admission agreed upon.
Teachers fitted for high school positions were not as numerous ten as now, and sometimes instructor outside the regular corps of teachers were employed for special studies. Dr. John Dearborn Holt was the first principal, and when the first class in Greek was formed, Rev. George A. Lockwood, pastor the Congregational Church in the village, was instructor. Dr. Holt, then a medical
student, was an enthusiastic teacher, and greatly desired to send a class of boys from his school to college. Rev. Mr. Lockwood, was a scholarly man, a graduate of Yale University, and the influence of these two men inclined young Parrott toward a liberal education.
Things did not run smoothly in the new school, however. Before establishment, it was decided to house it in a more pretentious building; but the choice of the site made trouble. There were several available lots, but each near resident preferred to have the building and its restless occupants somewhere else. The result was that the site finally chosen was seized in disregard to the wishes of the owner, Miss Frances Norton. It resulted in a law suit and
victory for the owner. That broke up the school until the matter of school building could be adjusted.
This interruption caused Parrott to continue his studies at Hebron Academy, at that time the natural school center for Oxford county. Later he went to Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, where he remained until he entered Yale University in 1881.
Parrott attained a fair rank in college and took some part in athletics. He pulled an oar of the boat's crew in their annual regatta with Harvard on the Tames during this third year. Socially he was liked, and was a member of
several college society at the university. It may be of interest to note that during the time he was at Yale, William H. Taft, future president of the United States, was a student, although not a member of Mr. Parrott's class.
On graduating, he took up the study of law, remaining two years more in New Haven in the university law school. On receiving his degree of Bachelor of law, he was admitted to the bar of his native county in 1887, but had but one case at Paris, the shire town of Oxford County.
In the fall following his admission to the bar, he entered the office of the late Honorable Charles F. Libby in Portland; but in a few months time he hung out his shingle in Jacksonville, Florida, where he found his life work.
At the time of Mr. Parrott's settlement in Jacksonville, Florida was just awakening to modern life. A large part of the state was unsettled and given over to pine barrens and scrub palmetto hummocks. Most of the large cities we now know were unborn. Railroads were only penetrating the northern part of the state.
The winter tourist was just invading the region around Jacksonville and St. Augustine, but they were of the kind to advertise the beauteous of climate and situation. Harriet Beecher Stowe had built a cottage among the pines and written a book describing the beauties of a winter near Ponce De Leon's fountain of youth. Those who were old, those who ill, and those whose blood
the northern frosts and snows congealed should go the Florida, and in a short time an innumerable throng began to start each autumn for the land of flowers.
Among the first clients of the law firm Mr. Parrott was connected with was the Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railroad Company, a John the Baptist railroad, their locomotives crying, or rather screeching, in the wilderness. A pioneer railroad, or a pioneer anything, does not have easy time. The penetrate a
land where business is yet in embryo. The Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railroad was no exception and it was soon forced into receivers hands. Mr. Parrott was the receiver. He did his best to put the road on a paying basis, but it was a long time investment and it needed capital furnished by some one who had faith in the future of Florida.
At about this time amid the winter birds of passage was General Henry M. Flagler, a man rich with the profits of Standard Oil but poor in health. He was anxious to exchange the dividends of that Croesus enterprise for health, and the sub-tropic sun and gulf breezes brought it. A land which restored health was worth cultivating. A man would give all he possessed for health, therefore exploitation must be profitable. Such must have been the thoughts which passed through General Flagler's brain, so he was ready to purchase this bankrupt railroad when approached by Mr. Parrott with a proposition to invest and assist in developing one of the best states in the Union.
General Flagler was a host in himself. His bank account alone was sufficient to develop this land of sunshine, and his will was a good as his financial ability. Dreams floated through his brain, not only of railroads, but steamships, palatial hostelries and new cities. He needed a lieutenant, and he chose Mr. Parrott, who had already had some experience in taming the wilderness and making it
blossom like the rose; so he left his Blackstone to grow dusty on the shelvesto take up the more active life of hotel, railroad and steamship manager, colonizer and builder of cities.
The first part of General Flagler's dream was easy of fulfillment, if provided with an ample pocketbook, but there comes an end to the dreams and it looked as if the end of Flagler's had come when the far point of the Florida
Coast, where ocean and gulf clasp hands had been reached. But it did not appear so to General Flagler. His fancy skipped from key to key out into the blue gulf until Key West was reached. How the intervening space of water was filled with concrete archways is a tale that has been many times told, and each time the wonder grows. Tunneling mountains becomes commonplace
beside this giant bridge, the supervision of which was the privilege of Mr. Parrott.
Perhaps a summary of the construction of this road may be permissible here. It extends from Jacksonville to Key West. The entire distance is about 520 miles. The first 394 miles is along the east coast of Florida (hence the name, East Coast Railway), then it leaves the main land to skirt the line of keys extending to the southern terminal, a distance of 126 miles. Of this section, 74 miles is over land, 25 miles is through swamps, and 29 over water. Of the roadbed, 97 miles was grade over land, 23 miles embankment through water, and about six miles of concrete arch and steel span work. The material used was 176,900 cubic yards of crushed rock, 106,100 cubic yards of sand, 286,800 barrels of cement, 5,760 tons of reinforcing steel, and 612,000 lineal feet of piling. The average cost per mile for building this extension was $95,000.
This dream was not the first of General Flagler's visions. It was the climax of a series of dreams. Materializing these visions took decided and untiring energy. So severe was the work that Mr. Parrott lost his health. He was much younger man than Flagler. The work was pushed strenuously that the older man might see the fulfillment of his dreams. He did see the fulfillment--the Promised Land-- but barely, and Mr. Parrott survived him only by a few months.
During his active live, he took few vacations. Each autumn, he spent a few days in his boyhood home; but with failing health he was forced to take more frequent and longer breathing spells. It was a dream of his boyhood to visit the Old World, but the demands of his vocation were so strong, that it was put off until sickness made a change of environment advisable; but the pleasure of the trip was thereby greatly diminished.
Lake Thompson was one of the attractions of his boyhood. He sailed its surface, swam in its depths, and camped on its islands. One of the latter--Megquier Island--he bought in his later years, connected it with neighboring islands and the main land by bridges and erected a beautiful summer home. This island comprising some fifty acres, was named after Edward Megquier, firs owner and also first settler in that part of Poland (in 1790) on a strip of highland adjacent to the lake opposite to the island, and now known as Megquier Hill. Tradition has it that it was cleared of the heavy forest which covered it in 1815, during the three years of famine which Maine suffered from extremely cold weather. It was planted to corn the next year and by reason of the vapor arising from the water, the crop was saved from frost and matured, the only corn to ripen in the vicinity. To this island he came each summer for the last year or two of his life, and it was here that he died, October 13, 1913, at an age of a few days less than 55 years.
His body was carried to Florida for interment. He loved Oxford, but his life had been spent in Florida, and it is there he wished to rest finally. He was greatly missed there. No newspaper was too obscure not to contain an editorial or biographical notice of his passing, and the prominent ones devoted pages to his memory and accomplishments. His name was coupled with Flagler's. They were called the two great Floridians, although neither were a native of the state.
Mr. Parrott married Helen Mercier, of New Haven, who survives him, and he had a daughter, Helen, who married Gordon R. MacDonald of New York.

The sudden death of Joseph R. Parrott will result in many business and political changes in Florida. For years it was his master mind that directed the affairs of the East Coast Railroad - it was his master mind that directed the affairs of the world famed east coast hotels - it was his master mind that operated newspaper plants devoted to the special interest, and his master mind that controlled the peculiar politics of a peculiar political faction in this State.
It was his power to spend enormous sums in campaigns to further the interests of the men whom he could control - to elect men who could be used to serve the special interests. It was Joseph R. Parrott who directed the Times-Union and other Florida newspapers which were owned by the Florida railroads in conjunction or exclusively by the East Coast Railroad.
With the death of Parrot what great changes will be made in the great railway company? What will become of the other papers which received all their orders from Parrott?
If the Southern Railway buys the East Coast Railway then the Southern may not keep the newspaper end. Mr. Parrott loved politics and he loved to reward his personal friends. He believed in the doughbag. He was a Republican, but he rejoiced when he could lead men who proclaimed the Democratic faith. Then, too, J.R. Parrott was a man of strong personality. He had hundreds of warm friends. He was naturally more interested in political success than any man would be who might take his place.
But in holding the reactionary Democrats together there is no man who can take the place of Joseph R. Parrott. He will be missed by that army of would-be-leaders who went to him for the coin to conduct campaigns - who operated under his advice and direcion.
J.R. Parrott was a wonderful man. Flagler had his millions, but his millions were more forceful because there were the brains of Parrott. Flagler knew Parrott and trusted him. Flagler himself always listened to him.
It was Parrott who was more the developer than Flagler. The millionaire gathered his gold from the profits of the Standard Oil Company which he had helped to organize while Parrott blazed the way for development.
Flagler had the millions and Parrott the brains. It was Parrott's brain that pushed the line to Key West - Parrott's brain that has kept up the wonderful organization.
Flagler died a few months agao, and the State knew that Parrott still lived, and nothing would be disturbed.
Now Joseph R. Parrott is dead, and no one lives that can take his place in the running of a railroad - running great hotel resorts- running newspapers and holding a political faction together - doing all these and conducting various other enterprises.
Florida's development will not suffer through Parrott's death, because Parrott has demontrated what can be done in this State along commercial lines.
Florida's politics, through his death, will be purified. The doughbag in future campaigns will be smaller and there will be a break in the rank of the army of men who "got theirs."
Men who obtained office by Parrott's "o.k." are at sea - men who found his generous heart the means of sustenance are in gloom.
Joseph R. Parrott was a great man in many respects. To his opponents he smiled. He planned well and arranged to do the most effective work from the most unexpected sourch. That accomplished much good no one denies - that he was the instrument of much wrong is self-evident.
A republican all his life, he led the reactionary Democratic forces of Florida. Flowers were showered upon his grave by those who loved him best. His home life was beautiful and his name will long live in Florida's history. If his death means the death of the Times-Union or a change in politics, then the inscrutable wisdom of the the Divine Ruler will be followed by the exclaim: "God works in a mysterious way his wonders to perform."

The SS Joseph Parrott-But Who Was He?

WEST PALM BEACH - The Joseph R. Parrott, only ship currently shuttling cargo between this country and Castro's Cuba, bears the name of a Floridian instrumental in pioneering Cuban trade in the early 1900s.
Parrrott, an associate of Florida railroad and hotel magnate Henry M. Flager, directed construction of Flager's monumental Miami to Key West overseas railroad, which opened the latter city as a trade stepping stone to Havana.
An ambitious law student, Parrott joined Flager as legal adviser in 1890.
He was made vice-president of a Flager short line railway in 1892, then elevated to the vice-presidency of the Florida East Coast Railroad seven years later.
When Flager died in 1913, he directed that Parrott - by then president of the vast Flager system - be continued in that capacity.
Parrott died just five months after his colorful boss, however.
The 20 million dollar overseas highway was considered Parrott's toughest assignment.
Flager, eager to open Cuba to Florida trade via the Keys railroad, was forced to turn the imposing engineering assignment to the law-trained Parrott because of a bidding fiasco. He received only one bid on the project, and from a construction firm asking a cost-plus contract.
The job was turned over to Flager's own men, headed by Parrott.
Parrott supervised the 128-mile track laying through muggy summers and hurricanes. A 125 mph 'cane caught laborers aboard floating camps in October, 1906, setting at least one out to sea with 70 men aboard.
But despite such setbacks, Cuba was opened to Florida trade on schedule through Parrott's efforts to please his aging boss.
Although the line never became a paying proposition, Parrott succeeded in creating an engineering monument - and becoming the namesake for the West India Fruit & Steamship Co. railroad car ferry so frequently in the news today.

Adelbert "Del" O. Parrott of Fall River, formerly of Somerset, a retired optometrist, died Dec. 1 at Highlander Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Fall River. He was 96.
Born and raised in Lynn, Dr. Parrott moved to Fall River in 1937 before relocating to Somerset in 1940. He returned to Fall River in 2002.
Dr. Parrott was a 1929 graduate of Lynn Classical High School. He was a fullback on the high school's football team his senior year. In 1934, he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Optometry in Boston, now New England College of Optometry. In 1951, he received an honorary degree from the New England College of Optometry and was made a Distinguished Service Fellow in 1952.
He began his career as an associate in practice with Dr. Walter Fondry in Lynn. In 1938, he set up his private office in Fall River. He remained in practice until his retirement in 1980. Throughout his career, Dr. Parrott pursued his academic studies at Burdett College, where he studied business; Brown University and the University of Rhode Island, where he studied nutrition and psychology; and at Boston University, studying psychology, logic and argument.
Dr. Parrott was a member of the American Optometric Association and was active in the American Optometric Foundation, serving as treasurer, president and trustee for the foundation for 18 years. He was a member and past president of the Massachusetts Society of Optometry. He served as chairman of the Southeastern District of the Massachusetts Society of Optometry and was made a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1958. He was vice chairman of the board of trustees for the New England College of Optometry and was named a trustee emeritus.
Dr. Parrott was the oldest member of the Fall River Rotary Club. He had served as both president and director of the Rotary Club and was made a Paul Harris fellow. He was a board member and director of the Fall River YMCA and the Massasoit Council of Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Somerset Historical Society and had volunteered as a doctor of optometry at the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home.
Dr. Parrott was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Somerset for more than 60 years and was a member of the Washington Street Baptist Church while growing up in Lynn.
He enjoyed amateur photography and sponsoring young people to follow a career in optometry.
Husband of the late Dorothy (Marsh), Dr. Parrott is survived by two daughters, Marcia Parrott Akerholm of Smithfield, R.I., and Jane P. Carter of Somerset; a brother, Stanley of Lynn; two sisters, Thelma McGloin of Lynn and Anstice Moody of Attleboro; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Birchcrest, Swansea.
Burial will be in Gibbs Cemtery, Somerset.

Notes: LYNN = Stanley W. Parrott, age 93 years, of Lynn, died Monday at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a brief illness. He was the husband of Beth E. (Robbins) Parrott, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Ralph M. and Louise (Coates) Parrott. He attended Lynn schools and graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1940. He also attended North Bennet St. Industrial School. Stan enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served aboard the USS Eberle, USS PC 1563, and the USS Constellation during WWII and the Korean War. He was a lieutenant for the Lynn Fire Department on Engine 11 and Ladder 4 for many years until he retired in 1987. Stan was a piano technician, and enjoyed playing the piano. After retiring, he was a school crossing guard in Wyoma Square for 10 years. He was a member of the Fire Fighters Union, and the VFW Post #507. He enjoyed reading and listening to music.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Stephen J. and his wife, Cathy Parrott, of Derry, N.H., three daughters, Joan L. and her husband, Bruce Phillips, of Danvers, Cynthia D and her husband, Neal Salloway, of Peabody, Barbara J. and her husband, Peter Saras, of Lynn, 10 grandchildren, Dr. Jason and his wife, Dr. Betsy Phillips, of Minn., Michael Phillips and his wife, Megan McAra, of Ca., David and his wife, Dawn Phillips of N.H., Caitlin Saras of Nev., Christopher and Gregory Saras of Lynn, Daniel and his wife, Melissa Parrott, Christina, Timothy, and David Parrott all of N.H., nine great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ainsley Phillips of Eden Prairie, Minn., Maya, Walter and Alexander Phillips all of Ca., Wyatt and Tobin Phillips of Hollis, N.H., Logan and Eliott Parrott of Raymond, N.H., and many nieces and nephews.

Born in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late James E. and H. Dorothy (Durkee) Robbins. Beth attended Lynn schools and graduated Lynn English High School, Class of 1944. She also graduated from Burdett Business School.
She was employed at the General Electric for several years. She was a longtime member of the Washington Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, and was also a member of the Beulah McCoy Circle. She was a member of the Rainbow Girls.
She is survived by one son, Stephen J. and his wife Cathy Parrott of Derry, N.H.; three daughters, Joan L. and her husband Bruce Phillips of Danvers, Cynthia D. and her husband Neal Salloway of Peabody, Barbara J. and her husband Peter Saras of Lynn; one sister, Linda Graninger of York, Maine; 10 grandchildren, Dr. Jason and his wife Dr. Betsy Phillips of Minnesota, Michael Phillips and his wife Megan McAra of California, David and his wife Dawn Phillips of New Hampshire, Caitlin Saras of Nevada, Christopher and Gregory Saras of Lynn, Daniel and his wife Melissa Parrott, Christina, and David Parrott, all of New Hampshire, Timothy and his wife Chrissy of Illinois, 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ainsley Phillips of Eden Prairie, Minn., Maya, Walter and Alexander Phillips, all of California, Wyatt and Tobin Phillips of Hollis, N.H., Logan, Eliott, and Wesley Parrott of Raymond, N.H., and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Mary Gokas, James Robbins and David Robbins.

He attended Downingtown High School. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. After serving in the army, he was self-employed as a truck driver.
He was a member of the Coatesville Jaycees and the Brandywine Goddard Lodge #383 F & A.M.
He is survived by two daughters, Rhonda L. Schwarz (Terry) and Rebecca A. Dinius (David); and a son, Ronald E. Parrott, Jr. (Joanne). His daughter, Tamara L. Wilson (Jim) preceded him in death. He has ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Coatesville High School in 1981; majored in pre-engineering at Wesley College from 1981-1982; and graduated from York College of Pennsylvania in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a minor in Management. She married her sweetheart, James (Jim) T. Wilson Jr. on April 23, 1993. They were married for 26 years.
While raising two wonderful children, she also had a full-time career for 32 years with State Farm Insurance Company. Since 2002, she operated her own State Farm Agency in Strasburg, PA. Although her formal training was engineering, her true passion was all about helping people. Tam touched hundreds of people through her work \endash helping families be financially okay when losses occurred. Her community involvement included: board member at Conestoga Valley Community Center; various committees for Conestoga Valley Education Foundation; President of Swim Team Boosters for Conestoga Valley High School; and board member at Lancaster Aquatic Club. She was fun loving, lived for family, and was so proud of her children.
Tam was preceded in death by her mother Barbara Wagner Parrott; father-in-law James T. Wilson Sr.; and brother-in-law Robert Wilson.
Tam is survived by husband James T. Wilson Jr.; daughter Catherine Wilson; son James T. (Todd) Wilson III; father Ronald Parrott; mother-in-law Betty Wilson; brother Ronald and wife Joanne Parrott; sister Rhonda and husband Terry Schwarz; sister Rebecca and husband David Dinius; 8 nieces and nephews; and 4 great nieces and nephews.

A hardworker, Bruce drove Mack Trucks and worked in the garage as a mechanic for Yaculak Construction in Pottstown. He was an avid fisherman, a member of the Royersford VFW and a member of the Teamsters Local 771 for 22 years. Bruce was a former member of the Royersford Fire Department, where he served as past-president.
In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by his children: Amber Parrott, Bruce A. (Marybeth) Parrott III and Gene Parrott; step-daughter: Anissa Strumpf; grandchildren: Dylan (Ivy) Gesullo & Toby Coulbourn; great-grandchildren: Axel, Colt & Emberley; sister: Redemption Cunningham; and companion: Angela Panetti.
