In addition, there are still several Parrotts from the 1700's that were also in Lynn, but which have yet to find their place on a tree. This group's patriarch is Benjamin, who was the right age to be Bryant's son. Thus the tree presented here is best seen as an incomplete work to get more research going on this family, and not as a definitive source. Unless additional paper records can be found, a Y-DNA test is needed to help undertand how or if this family is related to other Parrott families in New England. James Albert Parrott, a member of this family, was a trader who settled in Fiji in the mid 1800s, and established the Pareti branch of the family there.

Half a century past but few shoes were made in this vicinity except as they were put together, sewed and finished by hand by workmen on the seat, and one who first began to labor in that manner 84 years ago, and still occupies his seat every day now at the age of 93, is George Parrott of Lynn.

George Parrott was born in Lynn, Jan 14, 1802. His family's genealogy is traceable back 170 years in this country.

There is not much of eventful history in it, nor in the career of George himself. At the age of 9 he stopped going to school, and was apprenticed to shoemaking and took his place in his uncle's shop.

From that time on he has continued, with no interruptions to speak of, by reason of travels, wars or disabilities.

A family was raised and some property obtained, but otherwise a commonplace story is the story of Parrott's life, save for what it reveals of the character and pursuits of the old-time members of the shoemaker's craft.

At the corner of Olive and Chestnut sts, Lynn, is the dwelling house owned and occupied by the aged workman. In the yard in the rear is a little shp in which he works. It is a small structure, typical of the industrial establishments that years ago occupied corners in the yards of a majority of Lynn's prominent citizens. In the shop Mr Parrott has worked 79 years.

When he was a boy of 10 he saw the sea fight between the Chesapeake and Shannon from the top of High rock.

When he was a man of over two schore years he saw the departure of Lynn men to the Mexican war.

The union troops marched away to help put down the rebellion when he was near the three-score mark.

Into the little shop where he daily toiled upon the "seat" came news of these and other passing events. But his work went on uninterrupted.

There are three men living at ripe ages who are children of Mr Parrott. One of them, William Nestor Parrott, aged 46, works at shoemaking in the little shop iwth his father, and is of the third generation of shoemakers who have been employed therein. His mother is dead, and his aged aunt keeps house for his father.

While Mr Parrott sits in one corner of the 12 by 16 room, his son, a stalwart, gray-bearded man, is busy in another, a third veteran is making hand-sewed women's slippers at a standup bench, and there is room for one more workman on a vacant seat.

Mr Parrott recalls the old regime of the flint and steel for making fire, the introduction of brimstone matches, which required a coal of fire to them burning.

The social question of the use and sale of liquor had not then the disturbing influence it has now. Every shop in Woodend, says Mr Parrott, sold rum. The drinks of the time were spirits, rum, brandy, gin, aniseseed, snake root, etc. Whiskey was an unknown article.

There were times for grog in the course of the day's work in many of the shops, through Mr Parrott avows that he never took a drop during working hours.

Perhaps the temperance advocates will declare that this is a cause of the longevity of the oldest shoemaker. He himself thinks it is due to the good old stock he came from and his own frugal manner of living.

Dyspepsia does not trouble him; he was eating with relish a piece of mince pie when the The Globe man called upon him.

Though long past the age when a man is presumed to have the ability to preform (sic) such operations as are required in the art of shoemaking, Mr Parrott has not relinquished his craft. He does a little at it, but not much. Jobs of cobbling are his principal forte nowadays.

But a pair of welt shoes made by his was exhibited at the World's fari and a pair of hand turns would be impossible to him now.

Every day from 7 until 6 and sometimes in the evening he is on the "seat," taking a part in the shop work and talks, a respected man whose patriarchal record is something the citizens of his community are proud of.

OLDEST SHOEMAKER DEAD.

LYNN, Sept. 8 - George W. Parrott, Lynn's oldest shoemaker, is dead at his home on Chestnut street, aged 93 years. Up to the time of abandoning work he was probably the oldest shoemaker in the country. He was born Jan. 14, 1808, and early learned shoemaking in the little shops with which Lynn abounded at that time.

John and James Ingalls, David Taylor, Daniel Silsbee, Micajah Burrill and others whose names are history in the development of the shoe industry in Lynn were some of the old-time bosses. The shop where Mr. Parrott worked up to within six months of his death is somewhat over one hundred and fifty years old, 14 by 15 feet, and the bench he occupied was in constant use by him for over eighty years.

Dipre, 211 Ferdinand Street, was wounded in action at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on an undisclosed date marine corps headquarters had advised his next of kin. He suffered a gunshot wound of the arm and was admitted to a hospital in the South Pacific area on March 11. He is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Burton Parrott, Newington, N.H. He has been in the marine corps about seven years and went to the South Pacific about eight months ago. Previously he was on sea duty and was off Rio De Janeiro when the German battleship, Graf Spee, was scuttled. As a member of the 4th Marine Division he participated in the invasion of Roi-Namur, Saipan and Tinian in addition to Iwo Jima.

Dr. John B. "Doc" Parrott, 87, fomerly of Main Street, Avoca, died Friday at Department of Veterans Affairs Nursing Home, Plains Township. Born Nov. 14, 1914, in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of the late Burton and Jennie (Allard) Parrott. During World War II, he was in the U.S. Marine Corps, landed on Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was also a member of the U.S. Army Nationa Guard for more than 14 years.

Before retiring, he operated a chiropractic office on Main Street in Avoca. He was a member of the International Chiropractic Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Betty Gilchrist. Surviving are his son, Dr. Jack B., Avoca.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Langcliffe Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by the Kniffen O'Malley Funeral Home Inc., Avoca.

Lt. Colonel John B. Parrott Ph.D., 69, of Avoca, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, at his home.
He was born in Avoca, July 22, 1954, and was the son of the late Dr. John B. "Doc" Parrott and Elizabeth "Betty" Gilchrist Parrott.

John was a graduate of Pittston Area High School, Class of 1972. He has master's degrees in political science from the University of Pittsburg and Georgetown University and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He taught as an adjunct professor at Oglethorpe University and Kennesaw State College in Georgia, Kutztown University in Pennsylvania and the Scranton campus of the Pennsylvania State University.

Prior to his teaching, he served as an Air Force intelligence officer, where before retiring at the rank of lieutenant colonel he was the chief Persian Gulf analyst at Headquarters Air Force Intelligence in the Pentagon, and saw duty in Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm. John was also the author of three published books and many articles. John is survived by many close friends and colleagues.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea, with the the Rev. Jan Hunt officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time. Interment will be held in Langcliffe Cemetery, Avoca, with military honors provided by the active members of the U.S. Air Force and the AMVETS Honor Guard of Greater Pittston.

LOWELL -- Donald J. Parrott, 88 years old, a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran and lifelong resident of Lowell, died Sunday, March 24 at his residence.

Born in Lowell on August 29, 1924, he was a son of the late Louis J. and Marion A. (Dube) Parrott and was educated in the Lowell schools.

Mr. Parrott served his country during World War II in the United States Coast Guard. For many years Mr. Parrott worked as a hairdresser taking over the business his Mother started, the Ideal Beauty Salon in Lowell. He also was the hairdresser for the former Saunders Funeral Home in Lowell.

He is survived by his devoted partner, Thomas Lippe of Lowell, a brother and sister-in-law, Louis J. Parrott and his wife Patricia of Peabody and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Parrott was also the brother of the late Valmore Parrott, Pricilla Hammer and Ruth Sullivan.

Enky, as he was lovingly known to his family, was born on December 3, 1931 to Marion and George Parrott. He graduated from Saugus High School where he met his wife, the love of his life, Hope Macdonald. Enky was a member of Air National Guard and completed pilot training in the Air Force flying an FF86 fighterjet. After graduation, he returned home to marry Hope on January 23, 1955. Enky was employed by Delta Airlines as Captain, flying many different aircraft. He flew for 32 years, retiring in 1991, flying a Boeing 767. He loved spending time with his family at his home on Sebago Lake, and flying, his second love. There were many years when his Cessna 206 float plane was docked in front of his home on the lake.

He was a wondering and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be deeply missed. Born in Everett, he was the son of the late Valmore Parrott Jr. and the late Helga (Ehret) Haug. He was raised in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, Class of 1978. He later enlisted with the United States Army and served for two years before his honorable discharge.

Freddie was a master mechanic who worked on heavy equipment for various companies on the North Shore. His greatest pleasure was riding his Harley all over the country with his "brothers" of his motorcycle club, Veri Fratelli. Freddie loved riding adventures with his many friends that adored him.

Freddie is survived by his sister Ruth Martinho, his brother Roger Parrott, his son and daughter-in-law Fred and Trisha Parrott, his daughter Olivia Parrott, his grandson Jase Parrott, and his many nieces and nephews.
