William S. Parrott an early settler of the Klickitat country who won worldwide fame as an artist, died June 7, 1915, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Jane G. Golden, widow of John J. Golden, founder of the town of Goldendale. Mr. Parrott was born in Missouri in 1844, and came to Oregon when three years old with his father, Lewis S. Parrott, who settled near Dallas in Polk County. In 1859 the elder Parrott and his son-in-law came to Klickitat Valley to reside. When very young William Parrott developed a natural talent for sketching and painting outdoor scenery, and spent 56 years of his life in the work. With the pioneer spirit he worked more with the idea of exploiting the grandeur of the Northwest scenery to the world than the money he derived from his labor, and as a result the "big money" obtained from the sale of some of his best work went into the hands of others. One painting of Mt. Hood that was taken to New York by an art collector, who purchased it from Parrott for $500.00, selling for $10,000.00 at an auction. Parrott's paintings are to be found in the leading art galleries of Europe. He left Klickitat in 1867 and opened a studio in Portland, where he worked and gave lessons for twenty years. Closing his studio he spent several years in the wilds of Washington, Oregon and California, getting material for his work, finally locating at Oakland, Cal. In 1911 his health began to fail and he came back to Klickitat County, continuing his work here until a few days before his death, when he finished a large painting of Mt. Shasta. Mrs. E. Parrott Pond, of Seattle, who has painted a great deal of Northwest scenery, is his sister and his brother E.D. Parrott and Elgin Parrott are also scenic artists. The following brothers and sisters survive: Elgin Parrott and E.D. Parrott, of Seattle; John F. Parrott, of Portland; Mrs. Ben E. Snipes and Mrs. Elizabeth Pond, of Seattle;, and Mrs. Jane G. Golden, of Goldendale. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Goldendale Baptist church

William Samuel Parrott was my great granduncle. He was born in 1843 in Clay County, Missouri, son of Lewis Smith Parrott and Amy Long. The family came to Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1847 and Lewis took up a donation land claim in Polk County, Oregon. In 1859 his sister Jane Parrott (my great gr-mother) married John Golden and the families moved to Washington State where John founded the town of Goldendale.
William had the urge to paint, creating his own paints, brushes, etc., in the early days. Before he was twenty he had gone into the wilds of Oregon on foot, accompanied by a guide with a pack mule where he spent weeks sketching the scenes which he later put on canvas.(I'm quoting here from a family history written in 1959. At the age of 24 he opened his first studio in Portland, OR and taught there for over 20 years. The painting which brought him into prominence was the scene of the massacre at the Lava beds during the Modoc war in 1874. The painting sold for $400.. Whereabouts of the painting is unknown. His most popular painting was "Sunrise over Mt. Hood" from Lost Lake. One of his largest paintings of this scene sold to a collector in New York for $10,000. Around 1890 he closed his studio and decided to travel. On a trip to Switzerland he sketched and painted a Swiss scene which he sold in England for $10,000. He had a painting hung in the Louvre, I believe. After his return from Europe and a long rest, he opened a studio in Oakland, CA, with his wife, Sue (Hendershott, I believe), also an artist. (He married twice, first to Sadie Morrison - no children either marriage). He could be very temperamental and this prevented his making close friends. His health failed and he moved back to Goldendale where he died in 1915.
A few years ago, the Oregon Historical Society had a retrospective of Oregon (or Northwest) artists and one of his paintings was featured.

My beautiful, bright, funny and talented Mother passed peacefully from this earth on May 12, 2011. The things she loved and shared will live in me forever; the love of music, art, humor... special gifts that I hold close.
Born on Alki in West Seattle in 1913, she and her mother made many trips to Seattle on the streetcar so she could play her violin at amateur hour at the Moore Theatre. Billed as "Deva and her Violin", she played from the time she was five years old and continued to play in her adult life in chamber music groups and with the Oakland Symphony.
While she lived in California for many years and raised her family there, her love for her beloved Alki remained and she returned there with her husband, Heinz, in 1976.
She was happiest biking along the beach wall or painting the beautiful view of the Sound from her home.
I will cherish her beautiful paintings, her violin and ukelele, her handwritten recipes in the funky blue file box... All the things she touched will be dear to me forever!
Though you have gone away... you are in my heart to stay!
I love you, Mom.

A TERRIBLE NIGHT
Jeptha Parrot and Famly are Homeless as a Result of the Flood
There is an inspiration of fearful awe under any circumstances in sight of raging floods but is more terrible in view of those who have property or kindred in danger of the mad waters. The latter was the experiences of Jeptha Parrot during the December rise in the Willamette river this winter. He resided with his wife and children near the lower end of the government jetty at the time and during the night the rushing waters labored unremittingly to undermine his home and sweep the family into eternity. At dawn on the morrow there came a measure of relief in the prospect that the overflow had for a time given up the attack on Mr. Parrot's land and home. The family, however, moved out for the winter as a measure of safety. Subsequent events proved the wisdom of his precaution.
During the last freshet the water renewed its attack on Mr. Parrot's property and on Tuesday night undermined the residence to an extent that it toppled into the flood and was carried away. About two acres of land surrounding the house was washed this winter, and that area is a bed of gravel It was the parcel of land now owned by Mr. Parrot that Philip Phile's house was swept away in the flood of '61-2 That house was subsequently rescued from its lodgement below and now forms a portion of the Beach residence near the ferry.
Mr Parrot's loss is severe in view of his financial situation. Last fall he purchased from Sol. King the land on which his house was located. It comprised 36 acres, and the price agreed upon was $600. He paid an equivalent of $100 down and owes the balance. Much balance sympathy is extended Mr. Parrot in his misfortune, but he is to be congratulated on the fact that his family escaped the terrors of the flood.

Sept. 23, 1926 - June 2, 2010
Jean Parrott of Vancouver, Washington, died surrounded by family, June 2, 2010, from Parkinson's Disease. She was 83.
She was born in Town Creek, Alabama in 1926 and moved to Vancouver in 1941 when her mother got a job in the Kaiser Shipyards. Jean graduated from Vancouver High School in 1945. In August of 1953, she married Enoch C. "Sprig" Parrott. They built their house in Ellsworth area in 1960 to raise their family,
In 1968, she achieved a dream by attending Clark College to earn her nursing degree. She worked for Bess Kaiser Hospital until her retirement in 1986.
She is survived by her two children; daughter, Carole and husband Todd; and son, Craig and his wife Jill and their two daughters, Keely and Sophie. Her husband, Sprig, passed away in 1979.
At her insistence, there will be no service. In hopes of finding a cure for Parkinson's and other diseases, she was an anatomical donor to science through Med-Cure. We are thankful for the wonderful care provided to her at French Road Springs AFH during her final years, as well as Kaiser Home Health Care and Kaiser Hospice.
