  • 1. Capt Henry Parrott, son of John Parrott, was born on 15 Nov 1782 in Botetourt Co., Virginia and died on 17 Dec 1851 in Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia, at age 69.

Notes: Information from Parrott Talk 2(3):33 1974, citing Piper family bible. Henry's parents are not identified.

Parrott Talk IX:94, 1991, gives two scenarios. In one, Captn Henry is the s/o of an older Henry also living in Botetourt [descended from Bryant Parrott of New England]. This scenario is likely wrong.

Accordingly, it also describes Henry A. Parrott's confederate pension application: "Dr. Parrott stated his father was William Lusk Parrott; his grandfather was Capt. Henry Parrott and his great-grandfather was John Parrott, a Frenchman who came with the French Army and fought with Washington in the war for Independence from England." So, if the information on the pension application is accurate, Captain Henry Parrott was not related to the other Henry living in Botetourt.

    Notes: Severe Injuries.
Mr. Rufus M. Parrott, of this county, met with a very severe injury on Monday, the 1st inst. He was carrying a heavy log of timber across a branch to load upon his wagon, and in crossing, his foot slipped from a rock upon which he had stepped, and he fell, - the log falling on his left leg, which was pinioned upon the rock. The rock had a jagged poing upward, which was driven entirely thro' the calf of his leg between the two bones. and strange as it may seem, without producing a fracture. Whilst he is suffering very greatly from the injury, it is believed he will not be permanently effected by it.

On Thursday of the same week, a colored boy, working for Mr. Parrott, fell from a hay stack, and in his descent, caught upon teh point of the handle of a hay fork which ran into his abdomen several inches, producing, as was thought at the time, a mortal wound; but we learn there is hope of his recovery. The fork had been carelessly set beside the stack The wonder is that the boy was not killed outright.

Notes: Summers Hardware and Supply Company has had a long convoluted metamorphosis as it migrated through several decades, store locations and individuals into the business that is today located at 400 Buffalo Street.
    <snip>
To further add to the myriad of business titles, after February 1900, H.R. Parrott, who had been traveling with a nearby Bristol firm, arrived in town and bought John Lyle's interest in the operation. Also, Joseph P. Summers who had left the city in 1892 returned and joined the company. The new name was Summers, Barton & Parrott.

After 1910, William Barton decided to organize a retail store and feed business so he sold his portion to James A. Summers. The new partnership became identified as Summers-Parrott Hardware Company and boasted of $50,000 in capitalization. Summers became president of the new firm and sold the retail department to other individuals in the city. The business was now fully wholesale and would remain as such until the present.

When the Buffalo Street operation opened its doors to the pubic in 1911, its business flourished. The company began selling Ford and Buick automobiles in addition to hardware.

A 1915 Chamber of Commerce publication had glowing comments about the firm: "One of the most striking features of the big business interests of Johnson City is stability, as exhibited in the fact that among its representative houses are some that have gained success and prominence by steady development through many years of active and honorable business history, a notable example being Summers-Parrott Hardware Company.

"This is one of the largest concerns of its kind in this section and operates an immense business in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky. The comparatively new building now occupied is an immense four-story structure and basement, 107 by 150 feet in dimensions and erected in the year 1911."

After 1915, industry conditions necessitated the separating of the business. Parrott chose to stay with the automobile portion so he sold his interest to James A. Summers, built a garage next door to his former company and opened his store. Summers-Parrott Hardware was reorganized as Summers Hardware Company and, over the next several years, edged forward in spite of numerous economic downturns.

A pistol with one exploded cartridge lay nearby. He had been in ill health for several years and retired from business last year. No inquest was held.

    JOHNSONCITIAN ENDS OWN LIFE
Harry R. Parrott, Depressed Over Ill Health, Sends Bullet Into Brain.

Johnson City, Tenn., May 11.-- Hary R. Parrott, once a prominent figure in business circles here, was found lying unconscious in his room this morning about 7:45 o'clock, with blood oozing from a hole in his head, the revolver from which the shot had been fired lying beside him. He died within an hour, without having regained consciousness.

The shot was heard by the family, Mrs. Parrott rushing to his side, while other members of the family called in four physicians. A few minutes after being lifted from the floor the victim of a self-inflicted shot had expired. The bullet passed through his head and shattered a mirror in front of which he was standing when the fatal shot was fired.

The act of Mr. Parrott was attributed by the family to illness, Mr. Parrott having been in failing health for months, never having fully recovered from an attack of pneumonia.

Mr. Parrott was for nine years a member of the Summers-Parrott Hardware company as its vice-president, quitting that company a few years ago to enter the automobile business. He recently had retired from active work, leaving the business in the hands of his son, Frank Parrott.

    Notes:
John Parrott Drove Bristol's Streetcar Down State Street
    by James Gordon

When whisky flowed at every saloon and fist fights rocked State Street from one end to the next, John Parrott was quietly working as a conductor on Bristol's long-forgotten streetcar line.

From one end of West State Street to Willie Boom Hill out near what is now Virginia Avenue and Georgia Avenue, he followed the dusty path of the horse and carriage.

In the summer he swealtered and ate the dust and in the winter he shivered with temperatures well below zero as he worked on a job "that was more fun than not working."

John Parrott worked for the streetcar line for nine years until the line was finally disbanded and the tracks torn up and melted to help in the war effort during World War I.

Stopping at State and Ninth Street, he can remember seeing so many as five fights while waiting for just a few minutes to pick up passengers. Picking up drunks who wobbled out of the saloons, he would drop them off at the next street corner when they got rowdy.

He prides himself in having seen Bristol grow from a small town with brick streets to a metropolitan area that it is today. The friends he made during his nine years as a streetcar conductor still remember him, and his days as a conductor have made him a legend to those who are still alive today and remember him.

From 6 o'clock in the morning until 10 o'clock at night he worked for $15 a week and considered his wages as "good money."

"Why, you could buy 25 pounds of flour for a quarter back then," he says. "Making $15 a week was like making $40 or $50 dollars a week today and prices weren't near as high for living."

From the streetcar he went to J.B. Denton Grocery where he spent the next 35 years and finally retired from that business in 1956.

Back during the days of Centennial Celebration in Bristol, he would look at those men passing by who had grown long beards in memory of younger days and think back to himself at how men used to wear beards all the time.

The fathers of many of the bearded men who lived in those golden years, have children who are grown today and grew up under John Parrott's feet at the grocery store and consider themselves fortunate for having known him.

Mr. Parrott now lives on the Blountville Highway behind the Old Kerns Bakery on a plot of land of about 10 acres, and pleases himself by puttering around in his garden and raising potatoes.

Still lively and agile and friendly as ever, his birthdate of June 6, 1886 is hardly credible, he was born into a country spoiled by the Indian raids and cattle rustlers made famous in the saga of Jesse James and the Dalton Gang.

But he lived in a place far removed from those wild scenes and today hardly remembers the times that were the foundation of this great nation. The "rough and hardy" were everywhere but the lawlessness that prevailed did not come East from its Western capitals.

His was a youth of fun and contentment and one based on building a life on the Golden Rule. He has always maintained that if you are nice to people, then they will automaticall be nice to you with friendship as a natural result.

He had that belief instilled in him by the "finest daddy in the world" - the late Dr. Henry Parrott of Blountville.

In 1915 he married the former Florence English and they have one son, Bill Parrott, who lives in Washington.

The world has come a long way since the early days of John Parrott but the man has changed little. A little older maybe and much wiser, he spends his time practicing the rule off "just being nice to people".
