  • This family has been reconstructed with letters published in Parrott Talk magazine as the starting point. Enough material was published to make it clear that the family still has missing branches that still need to be added. At one point, the family was characterized as having started from 3 brothers who arrived from London to Rhode Island on board the El Dorado, and then on to Macon, Tennessee, but that appears to not be the case. Overall, information is very incomplete and much more research is needed.

One branch ended up in Indiana, and become prominent through Horace and Burton Parrott's involvement in the baking business. Horace started a baking company after the war, and upon his retirment, he was succeeded by his son, Burton, who together with his business partner, greatly expanded the business in Indianapolis. This enterprise was the Parrott & Taggart baking company became a major supplier of crackers in the midwest. It became the Miller-Parrott bakery in Terre Haute, which made Tip-Top bread, but was also renown for its crackers.(Click on photo at right for link to original)

Burton E. Parrott. One of the most honored names in Indianapolis business circles was that of Burton E. Parrott, who became widely known throughout the Middle West as one of the active heads of a great baking business.

He was a native of Indianapolis, where he was born March 13,1861. He was a son of Horace Parrott, a noted business man of Indianapolis at an early day, a member of the firm of Parrott & Nickum. His son, Burton E. Parrott, attended the public schools and later entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, from which lie graduated. After his graduation he entered the offices of Parrott & Nickum, where he remained until Horace Parrott retired, and also the other member, Mr. Nickum, when the firm of Parrott & Taggart was formed. The bakery products of this firm were widely distributed all over the State of Indiana, and it is one of the best remembered of the older combinations of industry and business affairs at Indianapolis. The firm continued in existence for eighteen years, when the business was taken over by the National Biscuit Company.

ERNEST MILFORD PARROTT Discovered folic acid 50 years ago, 90

Ernest Milford Parrott, who discovered folic acid while studying for his doctorate in biochemistry more than 50 years ago, died March 23 at a San Diego medical office.

Dr. Parrott, who was 90, had suffered from prostate cancer and was living at La Jolla Convalescent Hospital.

A nutrition specialist and teacher whose career revolved around medical research, Dr. Parrott pioneered nutrition programs during his 13 years in the U.S. Army.

His most enduring accomplishment, however, was the discovery of the essential B vitamin folic acid in conjunction with his University of Missouri professor, A.G. Hogan. Dr. Parrott was researching the nutritional requirements of baby chicks when he made the finding. Folic acid prevents brain and spinal cord birth defects, which occur in one of every 1,000 births in the United States. It also has been found to play a role in the prevention of heart disease and certain types of cancer. A deficiency of the vitamin can cause pernicious anemia.

Dr. Parrott was born in Cordova, Tenn. Before earning his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, he received a master's degree in organic chemistry from the University of Massachusetts and a bachelor of science degree from Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

He taught biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts before entering the military in 1942. A lieutenant colonel in the Army, Dr. Parrott became chief of nutrition for the Army's preventive medicine division in 1955.

Later, at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., he was instrumental in forming the Interdepartmental Committee on Nutrition for National Defense, of which he became deputy director. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Ann Archibald, of Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. today at University City United Church. The family suggests donations to the Salvation Army.
