  • This New England family is among the oldest P-rr-tt famillies in the USA. Nevertheless, it has received very little study; not even its original place of origin is known. The family is surely larger than what is presented here, particularly since the early branches are still undefined, and other branches still consist of loose ends. Although they started in the Fairfield county area, where many remain, many others have moved westward and southward throughout the US.

Perhaps the best known family member was Malcom Ethan Parrott (1889-1962), who made headlines throughout the country in 1909 as he progressed along on the first military dispatch ever driven between New York City and San Francisco. According to the Baltimore Sun (16 Aug 1909), "the United States Government is pushing every advantage at its command to solve the air problems and minimize the dangers in utilizing the motorcar in times of peril to the nation. Plans have been perfected at Washington for exhaustive tests in the use of the automobile in dispatch service. On August 18 the first 'transcontinental' organized war car ever intrusted with a military mission embracing practical road work work and official dispatch-bearing features will leave New York bound for San Francisco." Malcolm's account of the journey is recounted in The First Transcontinental Military Dispatch Car.

Another prominent family member was Henry Remer Parrott (1829-1919), who was known for both his political activities and as the president of the Parrott Varnish Company. However, the most interesting family member may well have been Minnie Parrott (1865-1943). She traveled around the country as a young woman, performing in various shows as a roller skater. She was variously described as 'the queen of roller skates,' 'possessor of 18 medals for fancy skating,' 'champion of the world on unclamped roller skates,' and 'New England's most graceful skater.'

The header contains two photos of Minnie Parrott. The one is a cigarette card for Spanish Four cigarettes, made by the W. K. Gresh & Sons cigar factory, which had been founded 1872 in Norristown Pennsylvania. The second is also undated, but it gives the photographer and location, C.A. Stuart, Buffalo, New York. C.A. Stuart was vogue in mid 1880s, as seen from the following account from The Buffalo Times, 12 Sep 1885: "... Today he ranks with the best as dramatic photographer, having made photographs of nearly all the leading members of the theatrical profession. ... Mr. Stuart also conducts a dramatic bureau and his studio is headquarters for theatrical people."

Finally, Frederick James Parrott (1913 - 2007), author of African Arts, was an Associate Professor of Humanities at Florida A&M University and served as Consultant to American Theatre for the Tokyo American Cultural Center

A lot of reconstruction and verification work still needs to be done on this family, so use this information carefully. Living descendants go by Parrott, Parrett, and Parritt.

Minnie Parrott, Fancy Skater, Claims an Estate
    WEDDED, BUT NOT A WIFE
Minnie Holt Claims a Common Law Marriage with Charles Holt

A young woman calling herself Mrs. Minnie Holt appeared in the Probate Court yesterday to establish a common law marriage with Charles Holt, who died April 8, 1892. Holt was a clerk for Francis Doge, a furnishing goods dealer, and the claimant prior to 1886 was an expert roller skater and traveled about the country as such. Her parents reside in Bridgeport, Conn., and her maiden name was Minnie Parrott.

In June, 1886, she said, she first met Holt in Delphi, Ind., where he asked her if she would become his wife. She said she would think the matter over, and meanwhile he came to Chicago. A few months later he wrote to her and she came here. It was then they agreed to live together as man and wife, Holt saying that such an agreement was just as good as a ceremony. Subsequently they went to housekeeping at No. 398 Jackson boulevard.

Mr. Holt left property worth $3,000, and Henry A. Foster, as public administrator, attempted to take charge of it at the instance of Mrs. Taylor, a sister of the deceased. Miss Parrott, or Mrs. Holt, refused to give it up, and she was cited into court to show why she should not turn the estate over to Administrator Foster.

The witness stated that she had traveled over the country without a manager. Sometimes she made $25 a night as an expert skater. At the time of the agreement Holt gave her a ring which she has worn ever since. Dr. C.F. Hard, a dentist, testified that Holt introduced the witness as his wife.

A sister and brother of the dead man claim that there was never any common law marriage formed and they insist they are entitled to the property. Further evidence will be taken this afternoon.

Letters of administration on the estate of Charles A. Holt will be taken out today by Minnie Parrott Holt, she having established herself as the widow of Mr. Holt. Mrs. Arabella Taylor, sister of Mr. Holt, denied that Minnie was the widow of her brothers. However the parties have settled the difficulty and, as a result, Mrs. Holt will receive the bulk of the estate, which consists of real estate on Forty-fourth street and household effects at No. 398 Jackson boulevard, where Mr. and Mrs. Holt lived. It is said that the sister will receive about $500.

    ===================
    Abstracted from:
Minnie Parrott, New England's greatest skatorial artist
Minnie traveled around the country from New York to Kansas, performing in various shows as a roller skater from 1885 to 1898, albeit with a long gap after 1886. Ads describe Minnie as 'the queen of roller skates,' 'possessor of 18 medals for fancy skating,' 'champion of the world on unclamped roller skates,' Champion Lady Roller Skater of the World, and 'New England's most graceful skater.'
Without knowing her age or place of birth, finding her origins is nearly impossible. Then I came across an article from a Chicago newspaper, The Inter Ocean, 28 Jun 1892, with an intriguing headline: "Minnie Parrott, Fancy Skater, Claims an Estate. WEDDED, BUT NOT A WIFE." The gist of the article is that Minnie had entered into a common law marriage with Charles A. Holt, who had died on 8 April 1892, and his family was contesting Minnie's right to inherit his property. More importantly, the article hinted at her age saying she was a "young woman" and went on to say she "was an expert roller skater and traveled about the country as such. Her parents reside in Bridgeport, Conn., and her maiden name was Minnie Parrott."
Guessing that her parents, given the era, would not have let her leave the house prior to her 21st birthday, I guessed her birth year to be 1864, 21 years prior to her first appearance in an ad. A search of Fairfield (county where Bridgeport is located) census records for a Minnie Parrott b 1864 quickly found her parents, Andrew B. and Mary E. Buddington Parrott. This identification was later confirmed when I found her 1st marriage record and her death certificate.
Minnie was born about 1864. Sometime around 1886 or soon thereafter, she entered into a common law marriage with Charles Holt, who died in 1892. She skated again for a while, and then moved to Montana, where she married Elmer Dunlap, a widower, in 1916. By the 1930 census, they were no longer together, and he died in 1936. Minnie apparently returned to Chicago, where she died on 14 Feb 1943.
There is an undated photo of a Minnie Parrott on a cigarette card for Spanish Four cigarettes, made by the W. K. Gresh & Sons cigar factory, which had been founded 1872 in Norristown Pennsylvania. So at least, it was the right part of the country and the right timeframe. However, I cannot find any indication whatsoever that Minnie the skater had ever acted.
I was able to find a second photo of Minnie . It is also undated, but it gives the photographer and location, C.A. Stuart, Buffalo, New York. C.A. Stuart was vogue in mid 1880s, as seen from the following account from The Buffalo Times, 12 Sep 1885: "… Today he ranks with the best as dramatic photographer, having made photographs of nearly all the leading members of the theatrical profession. … Mr. Stuart also conducts a dramatic bureau and his studio is headquarters for theatrical people."
Thus, the Minnie in the photographs was in the same town and in the same time frame as was Minnie the skatorial artist. After finding no other Minnies of the right age and right place, I believe that the classification as actress came from the seller of the card, rather than from any type of record, and that the two Minnies are one and the same.

    132. Marvin Emory Parrott Jr. (Marvin Emory Sr.5, John4, John3, John2, John1) was born on 16 Dec 1871 in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York and died on 4 Feb 1921 in Norristown, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania at age 49.

General Notes: DETECTIVES ARREST MARVIN E. PARROTT AT REVOLVER POINT
    -----------

Former Secretary of Brooklyn League Is Caught in Dime Novel Style in Fashionable Apartments
    ------------
    GRAND LARCENY CHARGED.
    ------------
Lawyer, Who Has Been in Trouble Before, Is Locked Up in Cell at Police Station.

Marvin Emory Parrott, formerly secretary of the Brooklyn League, whose law practice has kept him briskly on the move from one office building to another for some years, is to-day occupying a dimly-lighted little cell at the Jefferson Market police station, earnestly, but up to the the latest resports vainly, endeavoring to secure a $1000 bail bond.

Parrott is accused of grand larceny, the specific allegation against him being that he robbed unfortunates looking for work by means of the old cash bond swindle. Parrott protests his innocence with volubility and eloquence, but he will nevertheless be compelled to appear in court tomorrow and face the persons who say he appropriated their money.

The accused ex-Brooklynite was taken from his handsomely furnished apartments in the fashionable St. Francis Court, One Hundred and Thirty-fifth street and Riverside Drive, Manhattan, this morning, by three detectives, who allege that the sight of their pistols alone prevented Parrott from escaping down five flights of fire escape. At the time, Lawyer Parrott was clad in his pajamas.

The incidents attending Mr. Parrott's arrest caused considerable commotion among the wealthy tenants of the fine apartment house who were awakiend at 3 o'clock in the morning by the noise made by the detectives.

Parrott has not been living in Brooklyn for some time. At one time he had considerable interest in sewer claim cases, one of which involved him in a lot of trouble. It was alleged that he collected the claim and then took a trip to Europe without settling with his client. He arranged that difficulty after some trouble.

It is said that the Brooklyn Bar Association, through its grievance committee made some investigation of Parrott, but the lawyer made earnest explanations and the charges against him were not pressed.

Since removing to Manhattan Parrott has had offices for brief periods in the Pulitzer Building, in the Tribune Buliding (sic), in the Terminal Building and in the Singer Building, at all of which places, since his somewhat unexpected departures, hundreds of people, it is said, have been inquiring for him at various intervals.

Parrott's accusers in the present instance are Edward W. Thomas of 224 West One Hundred and Sixteenth street, and Joseph Cafulleras, a young Spaniard, living at the mission house at Fifty-ninth street and Ninth avenue, conducted by the Rev. Father Joseph W. McSorley.

Each of them say that they became acquainted with Mr. Parrott through an advertisement. Parrott had advertised for help and the two complainants had gone to his office to see about it. The first was to get a job as a collector at $12 a week, and the second was to be installed in a responsible position, at the same weekly wage. Each was induced to put cash security, but when they went to look for their positions they found that Parrott had moved away.

    The Two Complaints Against Parrott.

Thomas' story to the police was as follows:

"Mr. Parrott told me I could have a job of colelctor (sic) in his office, but he said I would have to put up a cash bond of $200. I told him I did not have that much money, and he very kindly said $46, all I could scrape up in the world, would do. I was very glad to get the job. Mr. Parrott had offices then in the Singer Building, and I had no idea but that he was all right. I went home and told my wife the good news when I got the job, but when I went to report the next morning I found the office closed. Mr. Parott was gone and I did not know where to find him."

The story told by the young Spaniard was very similar. He was to put up $100 as security for his position, and young Cafulleras, not having the money himself, borrowed the money of his fellow students.

"Mr. Parrott told me he needed just such a bright boy as I am," the boy told the police, "and he thought I would fill the position nicely. He was a very pleasant man, and I was anxious to get some work. When he told me I would have to have $100 as security, I went back to school, and finally managed to borrow that much. I went back the same day and gave him the $100. But when I returned later to go to work the office was closed up."

The Thomas and Cafulleras incidents were separated by an interval of some weeks. Long before Father McSorley, therefore, came to the conclusion that a police investigation was ncessary, Thomas had already sworn out a warrant for Parrott's arrest and the police would have arrested him some time ago but for the lawyer's peculiar restless inability to stay very long in any one office.

Yesterday, Father McSorley urged Cafulleras to make a complaint but when the boy reached the station house he found that Detectives Hyams and Hughes had already been assigned to the case at the request of Thomas. Detective Howrey was detailed to take the Cafulleras warrant and go on an individual hunt for Parrott. On the way to the St. Francis court the sleuth met his two fellows and the three decided to join forces and descend upon the lawyer in a body.

Story of the Capture of Young Parrott
Anticipating that the former secretary of the Brooklyn League might attempt some trick to get away, Hyams and Hughes went into the rear court while Howrey continued upstairs to the Parrott apartment, which is on the fifth floor.

"Who are you?" demanded the lawyer in answer to the detective's knock.

"I am the janitor," the detective answered. "There is a bad leak in your bathroom and I want to fix it."

The lawyer, not to be caught so easily, investigated the bathroom himself and came back with the statement that there was a mistake.

"Go away from here," he ordered through the locked door.

"Well, then, I am a detective, and if you don't open the door I will break it in," Howrey said, whereupon Parrott told him to wait a minute until he could get some clothes on.

Say Parrott Tried to Flee Fire Escape.
Instead of dressing, the detectives say, Parrott made for the fire escape in his pajamas where he was met by the two waiting plainclothes men.

"You will get back in there if you don't want to get shot," they told him and Parrott made haste to comply. Howrey, in the meanwhile, with the aid of Hyams, who left Hughes to watch the fire escape, forced the door of the Parrott apartment and the lawyer, still in his nightclothes, was placed under arrest.

Parrott's explanation this morning in his cell at the Jefferson Market station, varied somewhat from that of the detectives.

"It is not true that I tried to escape and they had to threaten me with the pistols," he said. "The reason I went to the fire escape was because I thought there were burglars there. There have been many burglaries in the neighborhood of late and when I and my wife were awakened by the knocking, we instantly thought someone was trying to get in.

"I did not try to swindle either Thomas or the Cafulleras boy. I gave the latter a note for his money, with four per cent. interest. I was going to open a place in upper Broadway to-day and he could have had his position then as I promised."

Mr. Parrott said he had sent for a lawyer friend with offices in the Tribune building to furnish bail.

    ==================
Not to be outdone by the foreign Governments in seeking the greatest results from experiments in navigation and the practical adoption of the high-class automobile for purposes of warfare, the United States Government is pushing every advantage at its command to solve the air problems and minimize the dangers in utilizing the motorcar in times of peril to the nation. Plans have been perfected at Washington for exhaustive tests in the use of the automobile in dispatch service. On August 18 the first "transcontinental" organized war car ever intrusted with a military mission embracing practical road work work and official dispatch-bearing features will leave New York bound for San Francisco.

    <...>

M.E. Parrott, of Poughkeepsie, a private in the New York State National Guard, a trained soldier, enthusiastic automobile tourist and a graduate of a military school that made a specialty of training men for large military operations in the field, has been appointed to bear the dispatch from General Wood to General Weston.

The machine selected for the test is the Mitchell Ranger, a four-cylinder Mitchell touring car, the first 1910 model turned out at the Racine factory, under the personal supervision of Designer Bate. The car will have no special mechanical equipment, the motor and all parts of the frame, axles, wheels, springs, etc., being the same as the Mitchell Motorcar Company will supply for all of its 1910 output. In the tonneau, however, will be carried shelter tents and sleeping paraphernalia for Private Parrott, his driver, and the remainder of the khaki-clad detail assigned to the car.
