This family's earliest known ancestor is from Rockingham county, North Carolina, but there is no paper trail that links them to the Parrott family from there, so the ultimate origin of this family remains unknown. Indirect evidence is provided by an autosomal DNA match between a descendant of this family and a descendant of the James Ishmael Parrott family of Mississippi, which in turn is related to the descendants of a Benjamin Parrott, also of Rockingham county. But, autosomal matches are not definitive. Unless additional documentation is found, a Y-DNA test is the only way to confirm this relationship. This family moved to northern Georgia, and its descendants still live there and in surrounding areas.

    Notes: Junk Becomes Her Treasure
    by Nancy Green

Digging in junk piles has turned out to be a favorite hobby for Mrs. Felix Parrott. Actually, it's not the digging, it's the loot she uncovers.

During the past two years, Mrs. Prrott has taken up to bottle collecting, a relatively new hobby that has swept the nation.

The Parrott home, located in the Texas Eastern village near Kosciusko, has turned into a showcase for Mrs. Parrott's large assortment of bottles.

Her collection is attractively displayed on shelves which completely line one wall of the living room. Then there's more displayed at other places throughout the home. The bottles take on all shapes and forms and some are very cleverly disguised, requiring a second look to determine if it's really a bottle.

One shelf is completely filled with Avon bottles. "Every bottle bearing that label is a collector's item. They are noted for unusual containers for their product," she said.

An area of bottles in the form of old fashioned cars could easily be mistaken for a model car collection.

"Now that I've gotten involved there's no stopping place. One find leads to another and generates more interest and pretty soon you're just hooked on bottles," she said.

"Junk piles at old abandoned house places afford the best places for digging. That's where you usually acquire older bottles. Then too the word spreads that you're interested in bottles and your friends begin to keep an eye open for you. Many of my bottles were given to me by friends who knew that I was interested," she said.

Each bottle in Mrs. Parrott's collection is labeled with the name of the person who made the donation and also where it came from. She has bottles which came from a number of different states and one from Germany. Many of them have sentimental value.

Mrs. Parrott reads various publicaions on bottle collecting and keeps abreast of knowledge made available to collectors. "The wide use of plastic containers will probably make bottle collecting an even more interesting hobby in a few years. Pretty soon almost any glass bottle will be a collector's item," she said. "For the time being I'll just have to dig to find the rare ones," Mrs. Parrott said.

    In remembrance ...
    John L. Parrott
    (1924 \endash 2011)

John Parrott began his career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in 1959 as an Assistant County Agent in Marshall County. He later became radio-television editor and news editor in the ACES Communications Department at Auburn University. In 1969, he was promoted to head of that department and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1984.

During his career in ACES Communications, Mr. Parrott led a staff of editors and writers who regularly earned national awards for its work in mass media and publications. Mr. Parrot was described by former ACES director, Dr. Gaines Smith, as having a passion for excellence and a willingness to go the extra mile to bring timely information to the people of Alabama. He was a quiet but effective leader who didn't have to yell to be heard, said one member of his staff.

Prior to beginning work with Cooperative Extension, Mr. Parrot had served in the Army during World War II and taught vocational agriculture for two years. He received B.S. and Masters' degrees from Auburn University.

Mr. Parrott was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and in various other leadership roles.

Following retirement, Mr. Parrott was active in the Alabama Retired State Employees Association and was elected president of that organization during its period of rapid growth.

Mr. Parrott enjoyed his family and his church and spent many afternoons on the golf course, having received a new set of golf clubs from his colleagues as a retirement gift. He always regarded golf as a reflection of how life was to be lived: play by the rules, never cheat, and go forward knowing there would be some bad days, but always better days ahead. John Parrot lived his life that way without exception.

John Parrott will be remembered as a man devoted to his faith, his family, and to the organization for which he worked. His name will be associated with words like integrity, honesty, and compassion. Epsilon Sigma Phi pays tribute to this wonderful man and his work by adding his name to the dedicatory plaque at the Extension Memorial Chapel.

Parrott: "Tough as pig iron," visionary
    Charles Oliver
Dr. Paul Bradley first met V.D. Parrott Jr. when both were students at Dalton High School more than 70 years ago.

"When I was a freshman in high school, he was a senior. He was a scientist from the start. He was always interested in scientific projects," Bradley said.

Decades later, Bradley would serve some 20 years on the board of Dalton Utilities, where Parrott, who passed away on Thursday, served as general manager. Bradley said he saw firsthand how Parrott's scientific bent and hard-nosed business acumen kept the company on the cutting edge of the industry.

"What other town owns part of a nuclear power generating plant? That was his idea. He was ahead of the game on almost everything," Bradley said.

Parrott returned to Dalton after graduating from Georgia Tech in 1939. He went to work for Dalton Utilities, operating the Mill Creek Water Plant. He was promoted to general manager/president in 1945, only the third person to hold that post. He retired from that position in 1982 but continued to serve as a consultant to the utility until 1996.

During his tenure Dalton Utilities underwent a tremendous expansion, and Parrott pushed the utility into a number of new areas, such as acquiring part ownership of Plant Vogtle, the nuclear power plant in Burke County, as well as acquiring the land along the Conasauga River for the company's land application sewerage treatment facility.

"We still haven't seen all the benefits from what he did," Bradley said. "He had a great interest in this community and wanted to do what is best for it. And he was very forceful in doing what he thought was right for the community. We had to go to court to win the right to buy into nuclear generating plants."

Dalton Utilities' growth was both a cause of and a consequence of the growth of the carpet industry.

Don Cope, the current president and CEO of Dalton Utilities, said Parrott helped create much of the infrastructure that helped the carpet industry, and Dalton, grow.

"There were a lot of people who contributed to making the carpet industry in Dalton what it is today. Mr. Parrott certainly, and his actions with the utility contributed significantly to the success of the carpet industry," Cope said. "He was tough as pig iron. He was very intelligent. He was very methodical. He was a very forward-thinking individual. He could see things out in the future that other people couldn't see, and he took actions to produce positive actions from that vision."

Cope said Parrott never really left Dalton Utilities.

"His love for the utility, his love for the community, his accomplishments as a leader of the utility are unparalleled anywhere I know about in the utility business," Cope said. "His advice and counsel and his view about what we were doing has always been important to everybody associated with Dalton Utilities."

Businessman Ken Boring said he first met Parrott in the late 1950s and quickly became friends with him.

"He was the last person in the world to take credit for anything. He didn't have any ego about him, but he was determined to get the job done," Boring said.

In 2006, Boring and his late brother Jim donated land at the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Thornton Avenue, near where Parrott grew up, to the city of Dalton for a park that was dedicated to Parrott. Boring said they believed it was important to honor Parrott's many contributions to the community.

"I can only accept this on behalf of (those people) who led to Dalton Utilities' success," the then 90-year-old Parrott said during a ceremony in his honor. "I didn't do anything. It's the people that have done the work. This is just a thousand times more than I could have anticipated."

    Parrott honored by namesake park
    By Erik Green
V.D. Parrott Jr. grew up in the early 1900s just a short distance from what would become one of the most traveled intersections in Dalton.

Now some 90 years later, a portion of the land at the southwest corner of Walnut and Thornton avenues will be turned into a public park bearing his name, a tribute to his nearly 42 years as president of Dalton Utilities. But on Monday, Parrott was quick to deflect the kudos choosing to praise the tireless work of utility employees.

"I can only accept this on behalf of (those people) who led to Dalton Utilities' success," the 90-year-old Parrott said during a ceremony in his honor. "I didn't do anything. It's the people that have done the work. This is just a thousand times more than I could have anticipated."

Dozens of family members and friends along with several city officials honored Parrott, the longtime former Dalton Utilities president, on Monday at City Hall during the official unveiling of plans for the 1.4-acre park. It will be built at the southwest corner of Walnut and Thornton avenues in the McCarty Subdivision.

Parrott headed Dalton Utilities for nearly 42 years and was credited by local leaders for his planning ability and fearlessness in business dealings, which they said helped spur the area's carpet industry boom. Earlier this year, he was among the first five inductees in the Northwest Georgia Business Hall of Fame

"In the carpet industry's success, I'm sure no one would dispute the role of V.D. Parrott," said Jim Jolly, chairman and CEO of Dalton-based J&J; Industries.

Dalton residents Ken and Jim Boring donated the park land to the city.

"We decided to donate the land because he (Parrott) had done so much for the community and we've been friends for years," said Ken Boring, who works in real estate with his brother. "We wanted to do something before he left us."

City councilman Charlie Bethel said the city will pay for the park construction, but wasn't sure how much it would cost.

"We have the design so we'll look at that and determine the best way to pay for it," Bethel said.

The park, comprised of three tracts of land, will feature greenspace, trees and will serve two roles: a walking park and a barrier between the area's businesses and homes. Work is expected to be completed within a year.

    ====================
    From Find a Grave:

On August 12, 1967, Capt. Edwin L. Atterberry and Capt. Thomas V. Parrott were sent on a reconnaissance mission over Ha Bac Province, North Vietnam. Two RF-4's were in formation, about 10 miles northeast of the city of Gia Lam. Parrot's aircraft was tracked and hit by a SAM and the crew was forced to eject. Upon landing, Parrot was unconscious for about a week or so.

Both Atterberry and Parrott were captured by the North Vietnamese, and moved to the Hanoi prison system. There they joined other Americans captured before them. They discovered that despite rigorous training, they were not fully prepared for capture by the North Vietnamese.

Thomas V. Parrott was released from Hanoi on March 14, 1973. He served five and one-half years as a POW.

Thomas Parrott resided in Georgia with his wife Millie, until his death on October, 16, 1998. Tom suffered for many years with kidney complications (result of captivity) and underwent a transplant before his death. He was buried at Memorial Gardens cemetery in Georgia.

Local history: Three local Vietnam POWs said to be returning after cease-fire in war 50 years ago
    January 28, 2023 at 12:01 p.m., by Clint Cooper

Fifty years ago this week, on Jan. 28, 1973, the ceasefire effectively ending the war in Vietnam went into effect.

With that announcement in local papers, three Chattanooga area prisoners of war were said to be among a final group of captives on the verge of being returned to the United States.

Maj. Thomas Parrott, a Dalton, Ga., resident, was shot down near Hanoi on Aug. 12, 1967, and would spent five and a half years in captivity. <snip>

Parrott, once back in Georgia, told of punishments that included constant kicks in the ribs, being kept awake for weeks straight and continual beating by a "goon squad" for four days.

Ultimately, he said, he agreed after weeks of torture in 1968 to make antiwar statements before newsmen from Japan, Cuba and Kuwait in order to avoid "some crippling physical damage." <snip>

Parrott's wife and relatives didn't know his fate for the first seven months after he was shot down, but his wife saw him in one of the filmed statements that were made of his "confession" that said Americans couldn't win the war. Back in Tennessee both Grant and Sparks had "days" proclaimed in their honor by then-Gov. Winfield Dunn, and Parrott had thousands turn out for a parade in his honor in Dalton. <snip>

Parrott died in 1998 of kidney complications as a result of his captivity. <snip>

Thomas married Millie Elaine Runyan on 26 Jun 1960 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., Georgia. Millie was born on 15 Jan 1941 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., Georgia and died on 5 Aug 2003 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., Georgia, at age 62.

DeForrest Parrot to run for mayor
    By Charles Oliver
Dalton voters will have at least four choices for mayor in November.

Former Dalton Utilities general manager DeForrest Parrott said Thursday he intends to run for the post. Current city councilman Terry Christie, former city councilman Chip Sellers and Advanced Insurance Strategies founder David Pennington have all announced they are seeking the seat. Current Mayor Ray Elrod, who has held the post for eight years, is not seeking re-election.

Parrott, 71, said the idea of running for mayor may have been planted in his mind back in 1950, when local Boy Scouts were given the opportunity to serve as honorary city officials for a day and he served as mayor.

Parrott said the biggest challenge facing city leaders is bringing in new businesses and new residents.

"I've always been involved in economic development in Dalton back with Dalton Utilities because we were the ones who would be supplying the electricity, the water and the gas," he said.

Parrott says he doesn't believe in giving some companies special incentives.

"If you give somebody something in the way of lower taxes, that means that somebody else will have to pick up this burden," he said.

Parrott said he wants to focus on policies that benefit everyone to entice people to the area.

He points to the city's Insurance Services Office (ISO) fire rating, one of the best in Georgia. He says that high rating translates into lower fire insurance rates for every resident and business in the city. He says working to maintain and improve that rating would make the city a more attractive place.

Parrott says his experience at Dalton Utilities was excellent preparation for him to serve as mayor.

"Dalton Utilities is tied very closely to the city as far as operation and knowing what is needed and how to provide for what is needed," he said.

Parrott served at Dalton Utilities during a period of growth for both the utility and the city.

During the mid-1990s the utility's wastewater treatment was investigated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Parrott said the utility eventually entered into a consent agreement with the EPA to make various changes in the way wastewater was handled.

"Some of those things were already in the mill to be done, so it was easy to agree to them," he said.

Parrott says part of the agreement was that he would have no role in the day-to-day operations of the wastewater system.

Parrott has been a resident of Dalton and Whitfield County for more than 69 years. He was educated in Dalton Public Schools, attended Georgia Tech and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor of science in engineering.

He and his wife Eugenia have two grown children, Jeff Parrott and Suzanne Logan, and three grandchildren. He has been a member of the Dalton First United Methodist Church for 61 years. He has been a member of the Dalton Rotary Club for more than 40 years. He was one of the founders of Leadership Dalton-Whitfield.
