  • This is another of the early families of Maine, tracing back to an M. John & Eunice Strout Parrott, both born in the mid 1700's. The known paper records do not provide any information as to whether this family represents a new lineage, or is related to other families in Maine or elswewhere in New England. Despite having been around a long time, this has remained one of the smaller P-rr-tt families. From Maine, one branch moved to Canada East (Lower Canada, probably Halifax), and from there Wisconsin and then Minnesota before the Civil war. Many descendants are still living in Minneapolis and surrounding areas; a small group is still in Maine. Not all family branches have been traced yet, so the tree is undoubtedly larger than what is presented here.

.Notes: .A Window on the Past \endash John L. Parrott, grocer at Town House Corner
By Kathryn Onos DiPhilippo, 7 Oct 2021

One of South Portland's lesser-known neighborhoods is South Portland Heights, and if you've ever been on Parrott Street you probably know how the neighborhood acquired that name. From the Heights, you get a good view of Portland.
    <>
With our town house located on the corner of Ocean and Sawyer, which would bring residents from around Cape Elizabeth to congregate in that area, it's no surprise that there were quite a few stores in existence around it. While a post office was established there in 1889 (the grocer Jabez Marriner served as the first postmaster), we've been looking this week at an earlier grocer who was a prominent man of the neighborhood.

In his earlier years, John L. Parrott worked as a house carpenter. He lived on Ocean Street in the vicinity of where Parrott Street is today, although it wasn't called Parrott Street back then.

He opened his store at Town House Corner around 1870-71. On the 1871 F.W. Beers & Company atlas, we get this great description of the kind of general merchandise that John Parrott offered: "Dealer in West Indies goods, groceries, provisions, meal, flour, corn, grain, hardware, boots, shoes, and general merchandise."

Parrott obviously did very well in the business as he decided to build a much larger store in 1873.

In the Portland Daily Press in May of 1873, we see this announcement, "At Town House Corner two new stores are to be built, one 26×50 with hall overhead by J.L. Parrott; the other by Sumner Libby."

The store went up quickly as he was already in business in the larger store that summer. We see this unfortunate announcement on Aug. 29, 1873, related to a theft that had occurred, however, it does provide some more details of some of the merchandise that Parrott offered: "Marshall Parker and Deputy Bridges yesterday discovered a lot of the property recently stolen from Parrott's store, town house corner, Cape Elizabeth, in a barn in the town of Deering. The property found consisted of cloths [sic], boots, cigars, underclothing and umbrellas."

    ========================================
Norman Parrott, 61, truck driver, happy with his simple life

Norman Parrott lived a pretty simple life and he couldn't have been happier.

He was a truck driver for Hannaford Bros. Co. for 20 years and a devoted husband and father to his two children.

He took pride in his home in South Portland's Willard Square neighborhood and enjoyed walking along the city's Greenbelt Walkway.

''He was happy,'' said his wife, Maureen Parrott of South Portland. ''He just enjoyed being at home ... I'll miss sitting around with him and his quirky sense of humor.''

Mr. Parrott died early Wednesday at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was 61.

Mr. Parrott drove a tractor-trailer for Hannaford, making delivery runs as far away as Millinocket and Dover-Foxcroft, and south to New York City and Philadelphia.

His wife said he liked the independence of being on the road. She said he received many driving safety awards, including the Million Mile Safe Driving Award in 1999.

''He was proud of driving for Hannaford (supermarkets),'' his wife said. ''He had a nice, smooth career with them.''

He retired in 2008 when his health began to decline.

Bob Cyr, a driver supervisor for Hannaford Trucking, said Mr. Parrott was a good guy who often volunteered to take long trips to help other drivers.

''He wanted to make sure the operation ran the way it was supposed to be run,'' Cyr said. ''I'm deeply saddened by his passing. My heart goes out to his family.''

Mr. Parrott was married to Maureen Parrott for 27 years. She remembered him on Wednesday as a loving husband and father who worked hard to give his children a good life. She said he coached his son's soccer teams and often took the family to Sebago Lake, where his mother rented a cottage every summer.

''The kids absolutely loved it,'' his wife said. ''He was a swimmer and he loved being there. It was always like a family reunion.''

In his later years, Mr. Parrott traveled with his wife. The couple visited San Francisco, New York City and Florida several times to visit family. On many of these trips, they visited historical sites. Mr. Parrott had a passion for history and his family genealogy, his wife said.

''I had to shake him a little bit and say let's do something,'' she said. ''He opened my eyes in a way. We enjoyed our little trips. ... We did everything together. We enjoyed each other's company.''

The couple went to Q Street Diner about once a week and he went nearly every morning for breakfast.

He usually ordered two blueberry pancakes - heavy on the butter - or the popular John's breakfast sandwich. He almost always sat at the bar, where he could socialize with the waitpeople and cook.

Virginia Stoltenborg, a waitress at the diner, said Wednesday she was shocked to learn Mr. Parrott had died.

''We were trying to figure out where he had been,'' Stoltenborg said. ''It's so sad. He was hilarious. I feel for his family. He's such a young guy. He was more than a customer; he was family to us.''
