Photo above: Token for the H.M. Parrott & Co. cannery, owned by family member Harvey Madison Parrott Sr (1881-1968), who founded the company with his brother James Thomas. The partnership was dissolved in 1919. The company was sold in 1935, when Harvey defaulted on his mortgage

This family is assumed to belong with the rest of the other Talbot county Parrott families. In the absence of DNA results or a paper trail, the nature of the relationship must remain speculative. Any information that would help verify that this is a branch of the main tree or explain how it connects would be greatly appreciated. There is a possibility that this particular branch is daughtered out.

Information posted on Find a Grave by Judy Glanville, Mar 25, 2008:

Born on the family farm, "Valliant's Delight," near Preston, Maryland, which had been owned by the Valliant Family since at least 1789, my Grandfather, youngest of three sons, was the only one in the family who didn't attend college. His older two brothers both attended Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland, and became Lawyers. My Grandfather was approaching College age when, in the middle of the night, the house burned to the ground, taking all with it, including his College Funds. They were all lucky to have escaped with their lives, for the fire was undetected until a farm-hand, who lived upstairs and had his own entrance to the house, was awakened by the smoke and alerted the sleeping family. They were able to run out of the house clad in only their night clothes.

He met my Grandmother when she came down to the Eastern Shore from Baltimore one summer to visit her cousins. They married in Baltimore November 22, 1905.

They lived on the family farm until the Depression, during which time he owned several tomato canning factories while also farming and raising livestock. He and my Grandmother eventually moved to a 360 acre farm near Federalsburg, Maryland, and lived there until their deaths.

A man of few words, but a man who was highly driven, Grandfather was successful in all his pursuits. His farm was immaculate in all ways. He became locally known as the "Strawberry King" of Maryland, having turned much of his acreage into strawberries for a number of years. My mother recounted that nearby schools would close for the picking of his berries, and I remember large open flat-bed trucks arriving filled with crates to be filled, for which color-coded tickets were given out to the pickers to be redeemed later for money. My brother and I, five and six years of age, would go out with a carton to fill, eat more than we picked, return with a lovely carton of strawberries, receive our ticket, and were promptly finished!

Grandfather was, according to my mother, a "task master." He hated to see people sitting around and always had a job for them to do. Beyond a slightly stern demeanor there existed in him a gentleness, a love for all animals, the appreciation for the beauty of a horse and for a Clipper Ship in full sail, a reverence for the land, and an especial tenderness for a small child.

    ======================

Harvey married Mable Louisa Hooper. Mable was born on 10 Nov 1877 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., Maryland and died on 30 Dec 1959 in Federalsburg, Caroline Co., Maryland, at age 82.

    Children from this marriage were:

21 F    i. Virginia Lorelle Parrott was born on 15 Feb 1911 in Preston, Caroline Co., Maryland and died on 3 Jan 1995 in Berwyn, Chester Co., Pennsylvania, at age 83.

General Notes: Information posted on Find a Grave by Judy Glanville, Mar 25, 2008:

My mother was born on the family farm, 'Valliant's Delight', near Preston, Marlyand, and was the oldest of three children. Her brothers were James Hooper Parrott and Harvey Madison Parrott, Jr. She attended school in the town of Preston, riding her horse there and leaving it for the day in a local stable. She attended Hannah Moore Academy in Baltimore, from ages 16 through 18. She married my father and lived in Philadelphia from age 23 until age 60, when they then moved down to Seaford, Delaware, where they lived until their deaths.

They enjoyed buying old houses, refurbishing them, and eventually reselling; He worked as a general contractor, specializing in electrical work and building fine cabinetry. She was a master of wall-papering, painting, and the ability to see way beyond the picture in front of her. She was a very talented decorator, who could turn the most ordinary into something beautiful.

She and my father enjoyed and spent a lot of time traveling all over the world, eventually visiting every Continent. They drove a 1966 Cheverlot Convertible through every state of the Continental U.S. -- travel and being 'on the go' was a passion for her.

My mother was 'The GENEALOGIST' in the family, becoming interested in Genealogy in depth after her mother died, 30 Dec, 1959. After experiencing a huge sense of loss of 'who she was,' my mother set out to 'find her roots.' It was her mother's death that brought home to her how fragile life is, and how important it is to know your family, which prompted her thorough search.

She had been told many family stories from her mother, Mabel Louisa Hooper, most about her Swiss and English ancestors. My mother traveled the world searching her heritage. She went to the origin of the Tschudi's in Schwanden, Switzerland (Canton Glarus), and viewed the original Family Tree of The Tschudi's going back to the year ____ , copies of which, translated into English from German, are in my possession. She visited England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Switzerland and all over the United States interviewing relatives, doing research in Libraries, Courthouses, Historical Societies, and Cemeteries, writing all of her findings in longhand. She would stay a week or so in each location, spending from morning till night looking up information and transcribing it.

Throughout her life she had a great sense of adventure, a great sense of humor, a bit of the 'devil' in her, and a lively spirit. Life with her was never boring. Always entertaining with her stories about her travels, her friends, her family, her experiences, she was never alone -- people flocked to her. She loved people, animals, travel, new experiences, learning about her heritage, history, antiques, redoing old houses, gardening, and above all, her family.

Forever loved and missed by all who knew her.

Born on the family farm, 'Valliant's Delight', near Preston, Maryland, Harvey Jr. (Uncle Bip) was the youngest of three children. He attended and finished school in Preston, and went on to enlist in World War II, serving in Europe in Germany and France. After arriving home he lived in Seaford, Delaware, and worked at DuPont's until his retirement.

An avid outdoorsman and lover of the earth, he also cared for and farmed his father's 360 acre farm near Federalsburg, Maryland. Weekends, and evenings after DuPont's, would find him plowing, planting, and harvesting corn and soybeans, combining wheat and straw, and overseeing the planting and maintenance of many acres turned into sustainable tree farming. He would often be working on his tractor until ten or eleven many summer nights.

As a child and as a young teenager, I would eagerly assist him at any opportunity, and especially loved when he would let me drive his old Farmall H tractor, dragging and discing under his watchful eye. He enjoyed playing mischievous tricks on me, once having me stand behind the manure spreader to check something out, and then gleefully turning it on. I can still hear his devilish laugh. I miss my 'Uncle Bip' more than I can say.

    Fifth Generation (2nd Great-Grandchildren)

    24. James Hooper Parrott Jr. (James Hooper Sr.4, Harvey Madison Sr.3, James Alexander2, James Madison1) was born on 18 Aug 1950 in Salisbury, Wicomico Co., Maryland and died on 26 Jul 2021 in Quantico, Wicomico Co., Maryland, at age 70.

General Notes: James "Jay" Hooper Parrott Jr., 70 of Quantico, MD passed peacefully at his riverfront home while surrounded by his close family and beloved dog "Bubba" on July 26th, 2021. Born on August 18th, 1950 in Salisbury, MD he was the son of the late James H. Parrott and Shirley Parrott.

Growing up, Jay helped run his father's salvage business where he found his love for cars. His first car was a 1959 Corvette which he kept his entire life, turning it into a racecar for him and his son to race. This sense of adventure ran through Jay's blood, seeking adrenaline through sky diving, flat bottom boat racing, and drag racing. Everyone knew him as the corvette guy, he was an expert in hot rods and used this passion to open his own business, State Line Auto Sales. When he wasn't operating the business, he spent his time racing at US 13 Dragway and viewing national events. One of his most prized possessions was the Wally he won at Cecil County racing his 1965 vette. He enjoyed spending time on his boat and being surrounded by family and friends, sharing stories and talking about cars. Most wouldn't know that Jay battled end stage renal disease the majority of his life. He defied all odds and had the strength and determination one could not fathom. Through this journey and with the support of his family and the care provided by the love of his life Colleen, he fought the battle against kidney disease for 23 years. He never let his illness define him and he continued to live his life to the fullest. His most precious thing in life was his children, who he was extremely proud of.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Colleen Parrott, son James "Jay" Parrott III, daughter Page Kuntze and her husband Eric Kuntze, his grandson Hans Kuntze III, and many close nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wilhite and Dr. Satyal for always providing the most exceptional care for our loved one. A private graveside service is being held for his immediate family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Parrott Residence on Saturday, August 14th at 2pm where all friends and family are welcomed to join and share their fondest memories of Jay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Side Fire Department. Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, PA, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804. Please visit www.hollowayfh.com to express condolences to the family.
