Notes: Brutally Beaten and Shot by an Infurated Negro. Mr. Joseph Wood, a farmer of the 12th district, living in Patapeco Neck, was brutally assaulted on Thursday night of last week by a negro named John Gothard, who had been in his employ for some time. Mr. Wood had been to the city with his wagon and on returning after dark he was met in the yard by Gothard, who at once entered into a discussion with him about pay for some work. Mr. Wood busied himself about unhitching his team when the negro seized an axe and dealt him a fearful blow on the head, felling him under the wagon. Mr. Wood then called for help and dragging himself from under the wagon staggered towards the house, Gohard in the meantme beating him over the head with a bludgeon which he had picked up. Mr. Wood finally reached the house when he picked up a gun which in a corner but was too weak to use it. Gothard had pushed into th house also and when Mrs. Wood came to the assistance of her husband the negro also assaulted her, striking her several times and smashing a lamp which she had held in her hand. She managed to push the man out of her door and quickly closed and bolted it. Gothard tried to kick it down but failed, and with the gun which he had wrenched from Mrs. Wood's hands he fired through the door the charge lodging in the groin of Mr. Wood, talking her infant in her arms, slipped out of a back door and proceeded to Mr. George Haine's about ¼ of a mile distant, and gave the alarm. Mr. Haines and a colored man named Wm. Dorsey, started for Wood's house, on reaching which they found Mr. W. in the yard, wither he had crawled after the assault. His skull was crushed and he was bleeding profusely from the gun-shot wound in his groin. Mr. Haines took the wounded man to his house and after alarming the neighborhood, started for a doctor. A number of neighbors gathered and started in pursuit of Gothard, whom they captured about two miles off. He was lodged in the Canton station house and on Friday was brought to jail at his place.
Dr. Stein, upon arriving at Mr. Haine's house, found Mr. Wood in an unconscious condition. His skull was very badly fractured, from which the Dr. removed several pieces of bone, and whilst the other wounds were serious they were not necessarily fatal. From the nature of the wound in the head it was at first thought that Mr. Wood could not recover, but he is still alive and the Dr. now thinks he will survive.
Gothard, the man who committed this murderous assault, says he is 51 years old, but looks older. He has a very forbidding countenace which indicates he is a man of a brutish nature. The affair created great excitement in the neighborhood and there were threats made of lynching, but no attempts were made in that direction.
DEATH OF MR. WOOD. The victim of the terrible assault, the particulars of which are given above, died at 9½ o'clock on Wednesday morning. Justice Dorsey, of Canton, was at once notified and proceeded to the home of the deceased and held an inquest. The testimony of several witnesses was taken, among them Mrs. Wood, wife of the deceased, and the jury returned a verdict that "Joseph Wood came to his death at the hands of Sandy Smith, alias John Gardner, or John Gothard, colored, by being struck on the head with some blunt instrument, and the jury believe that said killing was deliberate and premeditated."
The statement of Mrs. Wood before the coroner's inquest was that her husband had been to Baltimore city to sell a load of wood and returned home about 8:30 o'clock at night with his wagon. He came into the dining-room and put down some candies he had bought for their little child, two years old, and asked Gothard, who was in the kitchen, to come come out and assist in unhitching the wagon. Gothard said he did not understand about unhitching horses, but went out after Mr. Wood. In a few minutes she heard groans and the rattling of chains, and thinking that Mr. Wood had been run over, ran to the side door and called on Gothard to go to his assisance. Suddenly she saw her husband come from towards the wagon, followed by Gothard, striking at him with a large club. Mr. Wood got ito he door first and seized the double-barreled gun, which was in the right-hand corner at the side of a small safe, but had not the strenght to use it. She went quickly for a light and returned with a lamp in her hand.--Gothard was struggling with Mr. Wood, who was covered with blood, and wrenched the gun from him. Gothard then struck at her several times with the club, breaking her lamp and cutting her upon the upper part of the forehead. He also struck a blow at her child, but missed it. Catching her child in her arms she went out the back door of he kitchen, and running around the house, screamed "Murder!" Fearing, however, that her cries would bring Gothard on her track, she hushed them, and made her way across the fields to the house of Mr. George H. Haynes, several hundred yards off. She met with much difficulty, as the night was pitch dark and the fields very muddy. At the leading to the house of Mr. Haynes she fell, but recovered herself and got to his house. She awakened Mr. Haynes by her cries and was taken into his house, while he and Wm. Dorsey, a colored man, went to aid her husband. About 2 o'clock a.m. Gothard was brought to the house, and she fully recognized him as the man who committed the assault. While she was cooking supper for her husband Gothard dipped his naked fingers into a pa of sausage on the stove and took out a portion. She reproved him for doing so, saying she would not allow a white man to take such a liberty. The blow of the club which struck Mrs. Wood was partly broken by first striking against the ceiling of the room.
