There is a group of Parrotts that traces back to a John Parrott, b 1792 in Tennessee, and who settled in the Soddy Daisy, Hamilton Co., vicinity. The family uses both Parrott and Pairrett as a surname. Although the paper trail ends with John, Y-DNA points to a relationship to other Parrotts/Perritts from South Carolina. The family lore is that the founding members were 4 brothers who came from France to fight in the Revolutionary War. While the descendants from 2 of the brothers are reasonably identified, the fate of the other two remains unknown. However, John's birthdate and DNA profile can be best explained if he was a son of one of the missing brothers. This information is provided to help others in their research on this family. However, somw branches are still missing, and not all of the information has not been verified, so use carefully!

    Parrott Family Settled at Soddy
Saturday, March 04, 2006 - by John Wilson
    Information from Chattanoogan.com

"John and Jane Layman Parrott were among the earliest settlers at Soddy, arriving in time to be included in the 1830 census. Three of their sons marched away to Kentucky to join the Union Army in the Civil War

<deleted an incorrect paragraph saying this family was descended from Francis Parrott of North Carolina. It was not, as proven by DNA>

A John Parrott from North Carolina fought on the Patriot side in the Revolution and was granted 640 acres of land for "84 months of service." John Parrott in December 1785 took up a 640-acre grant in the section of Greene County, Tenn., that became Jefferson County. That was on Clear Creek of the French Broad River. That John Parrott was a justice of the peace in Jefferson County. His neighbors there included the Ganns and Laymans who later moved with the Parrotts to Hamilton County. In the case of State vs. Elizabeth Gann in Jefferson County in 1816, Henry and John Parrott were called as witnesses. John Parrott sold 127 acres of his land to Isham Christian for $500 in 1796 - the year Tennessee became a state.

On Feb. 25, 1862, George, Anderson and Monroe Parrott went to Harrison to enlist with Co. C of the Fifth Tennessee Infantry. They made their way to Barboursville, Ky. All three became ill and George Parrott died. He died June 2 at Barboursville at age 32. The widow, Elizabeth, was left with children William Monroe, Emily, Margaret and Thomas Andrew. Anderson, who was 21 when he went into the war, was reported sick at Nashville on Jan. 17, 1863. He was in a hospital there Feb. 19, then he was discharged with a disability status on July 27. He had "chronic diarrhea and general disability." Monroe in November 1863 was "left sick at Sale Creek." He had been just 16 when he marched away.

Henry Parrott married Marzelia Penney, daughter of Thomas and Malinda Penney, in 1866. Their children included Lewis, James R. and George.

Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth, stayed on in the Soddy area. Their children included John A., Thomas A., Tennessee E., Phoebe J., Dollie A. and Jennie. When Monroe Parrott died in 1929, his three living children were John A., Dollie Nelson and Jennie Carden. Dollie had married John A. Nelson. In his will, Monroe Parrott gave Dollie all his chickens and corn and the feather bed. Jennie received the bed that had belonged to his wife. John was given a large wooden chest. John A. Parrott is said to have fathered 21 children. His last wife was Sarah Penny. John A. died at Soddy in 1949 at the age of 84. His children include Ben, Clecia, Orphie, Mutt, Effie who married Bill Wicks, Millard, Reba who married Gleason Smith, Ruby who married J.F. Walker, John William "Red" who married Ruby Skiles and then Linda Hindman, Imogene who married Floyd Shadwick, Aldine who married Thomas Parrott, James Cecil "Eugar" who married Georgia Skiles, Dorothy who married James Carter and Betty Jo who married Ray Rice.

Elizabeth, widow of the George Parrott who died in the war, took William James McDaniel as her second husband. His first wife, Jemima Liles, had died. Margaret, daughter of the George Parrott who died in the war, married Thomas Miller in 1875. Her brother, William Monroe Parrott, married Amanda Jane Ford. They moved to Milam County, Texas. William Monroe died in Milam County in 1943 and Amanda Jane died in 1907. Their children were Jennie Emerline, Robert W., George W., Margaret Elizabeth, Amos Ervy, Charles Monroe, Eula May and Luther H. This family spells its name Pairett. Thomas Andrew Parrott, another son of the George Parrott who died in the war, remained in Hamilton County. He married Mary C. Alexander, but she died of tuberculosis. He then married Elizabeth Emily Roy. His third wife was Mary Cannon Burns, widow of Washington Burns. Children of Thomas A. Parrott included Molcy who married Ned Thomas, Pearl who married Robert Barnard, and George Lee who married Daisy Belle Scoggins.

George and Maggie Parrott resided at Soddy. This George Parrott died in 1956 at the age of 75. A son, William H., married Lucille Penney and lived at Dayton. Their children were Roy, George, Gene, Mildred and Imogene. Other children of George and Maggie Parrott were Thomas who married Aldine Parrott, Mitch, Bob and Ralph.

Another family of Parrotts at Soddy was that of James and Mary Parrott. Their children included Alice, Addie who married Tom Reece, James Thomas "Tom" who married Beulah Childs, and Fred Monroe "Jack" who married Eva Gooden. Children of Tom and Beulah Parrott include Betty who married Johnny Minnis, Eugene Henderson "Corky," Sidney and Paul Ed, who was an officer of the Pioneer Bank at Soddy. Children of Jack Parrott include Elizabeth who married Paul Manning, Sam, Lillian who married Randolph Smith, Louise who married Clifford Penney and Robbie who married Clifford Smith. Notes: From Tennessee Valley, Family Removal and Population Readjustment Case Files on Ancestry:

"When first moving to this location Mr. Parrott was employed in the local Soddy mines, usually working at the tipple and not the mines. After the mines shut down, Mr. Parrott was unable to locate other work, partly because of his physical condition. After leaving the mines he was partially blind. Whether the condition was brought on by work in and around the mines or from other causes is not known. The landlady, Miss Fannie Wallace, on whose place Mr. Parrott lives is a school teacher in the Hamilton County School System, and since she was away from home most of the time she needed a caretaker for her property. She has for the past four or five years employed Mr. Parrott as caretaker and during the winter as janitor for her residence which is just across the road from the building occupied by Mr. Parrott. By this work with Miss Wallace, Mr. Parrott has kept his rent paid; however he could not meet living expenses. Consequently Mrs. Parrott applied for and was accepted on work relief projects in Hamilton County. She is now employed with the local sewing project in Soddy. This is a WPA project. Robert, 20 year old son living at home, is employed on the NYA project at the Soddy School. This project is primarily for maintenance of the school grounds."

Notes: Gene Parrott flew 104 combat missions in the Korean War
by Josh RoeThursday, May 11th 2017

Mr. Eugene H. Parrott Senior was born in Soddy, Tennessee on June 19th, 1928, but he told me nobody calls him Eugene.

Growing up in Soddy Mr. Parrott had a nickname based on a character in a comic strip. It literally started the moment he was born.

"When the doctor came and delivered me at our house, and held me up and saw that I was a boy he said well good. Here's another Corky," Mr. Parrott said.

Mr. Parrott told me in his living room on Signal Mountain these days most people call him Gene, but growing up In Soddy everybody called him Corky. In the Air Force everybody called him Soddy.

In October of 1948 he joined the US Air Force Aviation Cadet program.

He trained to fly the F-80. Less than two years later he was flying missions in the Korean War. From summer of 1950 to the Spring of 1951 he flew 104 combat missions.

"Well, I never gave it that much thought I don't think because I was just a young 22 year old at the time," Mr. Parrott said.

After he finished his 104th mission the Air Force decided anyone who flew 100 missions would be allowed to leave Korea.

Mr. Parrott spent eight years active duty in the AirForce. and then twelve more years in the Air National Guard.

He loved flying so he continued to work in aviation. He worked for Boeing for a couple of years in Seattle, and then flew for a charter airline in California for many more years.

"I ended up with a total of 18,000 hours of flight time," Mr. Parrott said.

Mr. Parrott retired from flying in 1988, and more than forty years after leaving the state he came back home to Tennessee. Last week he was honored as a marshal at the Chattanooga Armed Forces Day Parade.

    -------------------------------------------
Lt. Col. Eugene H. (Corky) Parrott (USAF-Ret.) of Signal Mountain, passed away quietly on April 5, 2020, at the age of 91. He was born on June 19, 1928, in Soddy, Tennessee, the oldest son of James T. and Beulah Parrott.

Corky graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1946. During his high school days he was active in many clubs and activities. He was an outstanding basketball, baseball and football player. He was co-captain of the 1946 Soddy-Daisy H.S. basketball team that advanced to the state finals (East Tennessee Regional Tournament). In 2018, he was inducted into the Soddy-Daisy Hall of Fame as a three letter athlete for his superior accomplishments representing early Hamilton County Department of Education. In 1948 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was accepted into the Aviation Cadet program. Upon successful completion of flight training he was offered a commission as a second lieutenant.

Subsequently, he went on to advanced fighter pilot training and became one of the first pilots to be trained in jet aircraft. When the Korean War broke out in 1950 he volunteered for combat duty and was sent overseas. He successfully performed 104 combat missions as a F-80C jet fighter pilot and upon completion of his tour of duty he was promoted to first lieutenant and sent to Westover AFB (in Massachusetts) for advanced fighter training. It was while he was stationed at Westover AFB that he met and would later marry Mary Ella Jones, who was very active in local veteran service organizations, in Massachusetts. On December 7, 1953, (having fulfilled his active duty obligation) Lt. Parrott was released from active duty.

Subsequently, he and his new bride removed to Chattanooga where he accepted a position as a senior salesman with the Signal Mountain Portland Cement Company. However, motivated by his passion for flying, soon thereafter, he was accepted as a member of the Georgia Air National Guard (stationed at Dobbins AFB) and continued his service in defense of America.

It should be noted, on Sunday, September 21, 1958, during a training exercise, over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Georgia, his aircraft suffered an in-flight incident that required him to eject form his aircraft. Which, qualified him to become a member of the "Caterpillar Club" (reserved for those active duty military personnel who had to parachute from a disable aircraft). Corky continued his service with the Georgia Air National Guard until 1966 when he accepted a position with the Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle, Washington, as an instructor and production test pilot (for 727 and 737 airplanes). In 1968 (still as an instructor pilot for Boeing) he was offered a Captain's position with Trans-International Airlines (later to become Trans-American Airlines), he accepted, and the family moved to California. He would serve with this airlines for over 20 years and retire in 1988. It should be noted, Corky was qualified (in civilian aircraft) - 707, 727, 737, 747 & DC-10, and various military aircraft. He had over 20,000 hours of flight time and the majority of his pilotage was over-seas (he had been everywhere in the world \endash twice !!). Additionally, all during this time, he continued to serve as a member of the USAF Reserves (at McChord AFB and Hamilton AFB), accumulating over 20 years of service. As a member of the US Air Force, he qualified for (but not limited to) the following awards: Air Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, etc.).Upon retirement, he and his wife retired to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the ancestral home of his wife. She passed away in 2002 and he remained there until 2006, when he returned to Tennessee (his ancestral home). Corky made his home on Signal Mountain (where he had, previously, lived with his family in the 1950s & 1960s) until moving into Morning Pointe Assisted Living in 2019. A very special thanks to the staff at Morning Pointe Assisted Living, Hearth Hospice and Heavenly Home Care of East Tennessee (especially Minnie) for there assistance. Corky was preceded in death by his Father, Mother and wife (Mary Ella). He is survived by three sons, Gary (Lori), Grand Junction, Colorado, Michael (Stephanie) and Eugene (Pete), Jr., Soddy Daisy. Additionally, he is survived by a sister, Betty Minnis, Knoxville, Tennessee and two brothers Paul (Suzanne), Soddy Daisy and Sidney (Vivian), Hixson, Tennessee. And, he is survived by three grandchildren : Lane Mitchell, Lera Leigh and Christopher M.; and several nieces and nephews. Interment will be in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
