Notes: From Bob Parrott, 3 Oct 2014:
Lived in Edgefield Co SC, Columbia County GA, moved to Conecuh Co/Wilcox Co AL with the relatives of Sarah Travis, and settled at a spot named Travis Ford.
According to my records, William was born in 1811 in Georgia-- he was 49 years old in 1860, in Sabine Parish. His father was Robert Parrott ("old Robert Parrott") who married twice -- (1) Sarah Travis, with whom he had at least 6 children, William, Mary, Lucy, Sarah, Elizabeth, James; Sarah Travis died in 1824, when baby James was a few days or weeks old. (2) Eliza Polk, with whom he had at least 5 children, Eunice, Susan, Robert, John, Eliza. (There was a slave son named George, who died a few years after Old Robert.). Old Robert and William became seriously estranged when Robert married Eliza Polk, who was much only slightly older than William. Father and son were never on good terms again. Old Robert moved to Wilcox / Conecuh County Al ca 1820., and then to Claiborne Parish and finally Sabine Parish In 1839.

When a boy of eight, he moved with his parents to Claiborne parish, La., and about two years afterward to Sabine parish, where he resided about forty years; during which time he was maried to Miss Elizabeth Arthur. His wife and two children, their only issue, survive. Fifteen years ago, Mr. Parrott removed from Sabine to St. Landry parish, where he resided up to the time of his death.
He was well and favorably known in the parishes of Sabine, Rapides and St. Landry. Kind, generous and benevelont, he was ever willing and ready to lend a helping hand to the needy and deserving. He was a noble neighbor and a constant Christian, having been an active membe of the Missionary Baptist church for many years, often serving in various official capacities.
The bereaved family have the heartfelt condolence of the writer, who would remind them that while it is natural for us to mourn his loss to us, we must not forget that our loss has been his gain; that his body only lies as if were in the crysalis state, ere long to burst forth in the beautiful, shining celestial robe, and on golden pinions bright, fit upward and on and on and finally sweeping by the beautiful, pearly gates, into the City of the New Jerusalem, where there is no moe sickness, no more sorrow, no more pain, no more death, but where all is joy, peace and happiness for ever and ever.
The State has lost in John Parrott A son, patriotic, noble and true; A man whose life and character May well be emulated the whole world through.
The church as lost an active member, One ever ready to obey; In doing things to its upbuilding, In rolling the stone away.
We have lost a friend indeed; Not one merely from outward view, But one whose every act and step and word Proved to us that he was true,
His family has lost - O, my God! Language fails to express!! But dear friends, take courage and remember God doeth all things best.

Death of a General
(Additional information with regards to the "Death of a General" -- On 22 July 2000, this message was received with regards to a different account on the death of General Alfred Mouton. The account, unedited, follows: "A note on the death of Gen Alfred Mouton at the battle of Mansfield: to my grandfather (John Robert Parrott), Mouton was a great personal hero. During the battle, my grandfather was stationed at the edge of the ravine, stationed where he could see Mouton's charge across the field, and where he could see him felled by the sniper's bullet. At the same moment, He (JRParrott) was also wounded, in the upper left arm, by another Federal sniper. But he dragged himself over to where Mouton lay dying, on the open field, and he held the general in his arms as he died. In my grandfather's words, "our blood flowed together." When the stretcher bearers came to take Mouton's body away, they found my grandfather still cradling the dead general in his arms. I still have a silk handkerchief my grandfather was carrying inside his uniform (gift of his fiance/wife), which he took out and wiped away Mouton's blood with it.
The blood stains are still there. Holding Mouton as he died was -- in my grandfather's words -- the highest moment of the war." This account is by John Robert Parrott, Pvt., Co. H., A. Crescent/Cons. Crescent Regiment Louisiana Infantry. John Robert Parrott was by occupation: a planter and banker. He was married to Alda Agnes Woods (1846-1927). This marriage produced ten issues, including four sons and six daughters. John Robert survived the war and died in September 1918. He is laid to rest at the Parrott Cemetery (family cemetery), near Zwolle, Louisiana.
Contributer and contact is: Robert E. Parrott, Grandson to the late John Robert Parrott. An application for Pension Benefits from the State of Louisiana is on file for John Robert Parrott and/or his widow.
====== From Links That Bind, p 241: "John R." soldier in the Confederate army and following the war was one of the first school board members in the parish and held that position longer than anyone else. He became a large landowner and was always addressed as Honorable John R. Parrott."
======== From his grandson, 11 Oct 2014: in 1893 my grandfather John Robert Parrott sold the right of way to some property he owned in Sabine Parish to the Kansas City Southern Railroad when the KCS was first building their rail line through the parish. He retained the mineral rights but apparently forgot to tell the family about the transaction About 4 years ago the Comstock Oil & Gas Co began to drill a natural gas well on the property and discovered the minerals rights still belonging to Parrott heirs. I was contacted by an agent who needed to know if there were heirs still living. My brother (88) and I are the only grandchildren of the original 34 still living. I worked with the Comstock Co and provided the names and addresses of 36 living descendants who are now recipients of the well's revenue. The process of finding all of them was an interesting process Some of the people I contacted thought I was a scam trying to get money out of them...

He served as a soldier in the Confederate army, was seriously wounded at the battle of Mansfield, April 8, 1854, after which he was honorably dischared. At the close of the war he married and reared a splendid family, three of his sons being successful physicians. While Mr. Parrott has been largely occupied in farming and stock raising, he has lent aid and encouragement to various enterprises and has been very instrumental in the development of the fine section in which he resides. For many years he was a member of the Parish School Board, and held that public position longer than any official in the history of the parish, and he has always been ready to answer the call of duty. His record as a citizen and official is ample tesitmony of the high esteem in which he is held by his fellow citizens.

=============== Funeral services for Mrs. Roy (Sibyl) Andrus, 81, member of a long prominent Acadia family, and a widely known community and civic leader, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Gossen Funeral Home, with Rev. Doug Foreman, pastor of Centenery United Methodist Church, officiating.
Mrs. Andrus died late Sunday, October 21 in the Gueydan Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She had been a resident of Rayne for 55 years.
For the Tuesday service, Mrs. Frances Lormand as organist and soloist provided "In the Garden" as the first hymn, and other loved selections included "How Great Thou Art," "Amazing Grace," and as the concluding hymn, "Nearer My God To Thee."
Rev. Foreman called on the large assembly of family and friends to join him in celebrating the long and beautiful life of Sibyl Andrus, choosing as his first message a comforting passage from the Book of Psalms.
At the family's request, another significant part of the service included a reading by Charity Guidry, long a "prayer pall" to Mrs. Andrus during her illness. Drawing much consolation from their many times of praying together, theme of Mrs. Guidry's remembrance was "Prayers Change Things - they make a rough road smooth."
Chapter 25 of the Book of Matthew provided the inspiration for a final tribute to Mrs. Andrus, Rev. Foreman reviewing these verses with the appropriate passage: "Even as you did for the leat of these, my brethren, you did it unto me." As he applied Jesus' message of faith and service to others as Mrs. Andrus' way of life, working always to help others as the built her career of service, love and caring as a foundation in directing the welfare program for those in need of these services. Hers was a helping profession, reaching out to others and always ready to serve those who turned to her in their time of need.
"As she stands before her God, she has much to commend her in His sight as her work and devotion even to 'the leat of thee' is her record of reaching out to others- a beautiful record of a beautiful life," Rev. Foreman concluded.
Following the services here, the funeral cortege moved out to Branch where she was laid to rest by others of her family in the Branch Protestant Cemetery. Pallbearers included T.J. Fontenot, Miram Harmon, Buddy Rybband, Conrad LeJeune, Steve Tomeny and Stanley Chavez. Gossen Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Mrs. Andrus was born in Zwolle, La. on July 31, 1903, her father being the late Dr. J.B. Parrott and her mother the late Olive Miller Parrott.
Coming to Rayne 55 years ago she had since been active in many areas of service, contributing greatly to community and parish and combining professional career with her love of famility and home as a lasting and beautiful record of memorable accomplishment.
In the early years of Louisiana's Public Welfare program she was appointed Director of the Acadia Parish Welfare Department and helped greatly in formulating these important programs while she served as a caring and thoughtful administrator. Proof of the love she placed in this work came in Tuesday's funeral services when many of the staff members who were so closely associated with her in those first years came to add special tribute to their sweet memories of "Sibyl."
She was one of the most active members of the Acadia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving the Chapter as a valued Past Regent. in addition, she was a Past Worthy Matron of Charity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Rayne, a member of the Arcaneaux Post No. 77 American Legion Auxilliary, and a member of the New Orleans genealogical Society as part of her special interest in this field.
May friends throughout this area- many whose lives have been touched and who found hope and aid throught Mrs. Andrus' ministrations and concern, join Acadian-Tribune today in expressions of love and sympathy to the bereaved family.

All meals were followed by her famous chocolate Pie or home- made cookies or cakes. Rita's dinner table was a magnet for festive fun gatherings. Friends and "stop bys" were always welcome. Many "Taste Buds" are forever imprinted with her great culinary magic.
One dear granddaughter said about "Ree Ree", "The best thing about being a Parrott has always been having Rita Parrott as my grandmother. "Ree Ree", your "old bones" can rest now. I love you, my little "Ree."
Her Motto was "Education is the Key" -- she was also a big fan of clean living , strict Catholicism and hard work. She was a stellar role model for those she leaves behind.

=============================== History: Last Parrot Reunion, Sabine Parish Source: Sabine Index, Many, La., Apr 21, 1999 Submitted by: Carl Dilbeck carlrad@earthlink.net
**********************************************************
by Robert E. Parrott Knoxville, Tennessee
On a warm, sunny Sunday in June 1939, five of the six remainig sons and daughters of John Robert Parrott and Alda Woods Parrott gathered for a family reunion, at the home of Dr. Reezin L Parrott of Zwolle. Inside the rambling frame house on Obrie Street, then one of the last houses on the highway north toward Mansfield; and in the yard surrounding the house, a crowd of forty or more kinfolk and friends gathered for food, conversation, reminiscing, coffee-drinking, picture taking, and the unique style of story-telling characteristic of the Parrotts. Centerpiece of the crowd, as photographed standing in a row, were Dr. James Crittington (Crit) Parrott (65) of Natchitoches; Elizabeth Anne (Bettie) Parrott Mason (63) of Los Angeles, California; Hattie Texada Parrott Armstrong Stone (72) of Shreveport; Daisy Dean Parrott McComic (58) of Zwolle, and Dr. Reezin Lawrence (Reeze)Parrott (61) of Zwolle. One other sister, Mary Virginia Parrott Greer (59) of Muskogee, Oklahoma, had been prevented from attending because of a broken foot she incurred in Muskogee while waiting for a taxi to arrive to take her to the train depot for the trip to Louisiana.
The brother Doctor Parrotts (known to many as "Dr Crit" and "Dr Reeze") vied with each other in telling and re-telling old Parrott stories, including their father's claim that he once met Jesse James in the Sabine woods, stories of the rigors of practicing medicine in the first years of the century, the story of the resident ghost in the old Parrott house on Bayou San Miguel, and the story of the building of the Methodist Church in Zwolle in 1898, and the story of a wounded Federal soldier found (following the Battle of Pleasant Hill in 1864) and nursed back to health and then hidden for a year in their mother's family homestead at Bayou Scie.
The five gathered siblings knew Zwolle and Sabine Parish well. Dr. Crit Parrott had practiced medicine in Zwolle from 1903-1907, in a joint practice with his brother Dr Joseph Bowers (Joe, or Bud) Parrott, and in Many from 1907-1911. (Dr. Joe Parrott had begun his practice in northern Sabine Parish in 1892, several years before the founding of Zwolle.) In March 1898, at age 21, Bettie Mason had been widowed when her first husband, Marshal Johnnie McComic, was killed in a street duel with Nick Sepulvado. Hattie Stone had also been widowed early, at age 22, when in 1889 her first husband and cousin, Dr Thomas Alexander Armstrong, had died during an epidemic; she was widowed again in 1901, when her second husband, Dr Norburn Cecil Stone, formerly of Zwolle, died in Shreveport. Daisy McComic had lived in the town of Zwolle since 1917, when she and her husband Robert S. McComic moved "into town" with her parents (living across the street from Dr. R. L. Parrott) from the Parrott plantation, three miles north on Old Pleasant Hill Road. Dr. Reeze Parrott had practiced medicine in Zwolle since 1907, when he transferred his practice from East Texas. At the time of this last reunion, four of the original ten Parrott siblings were no longer alive. Dr Joe Parrott of Church Point, Louisiana had died in 1936, and was buried in the Parrott Cemetery, near the site of the old Parrott house, Pennie Loraine Parrott Locke, wife of Ben Locke of Marthaville, had died in 1929, at the age of 57. The oldest sister, Effie had died in 1867 at the age of two years; the youngest brother, John Andrew, had died in 1885, at the age of three months. Their parents, John Robert and Alda Parrott, were known as among the earliest post-Civil War residents along Bayou San Miguel. John Parrott had died in 1918, Alda in 1927. A set of Kodak snapshots was made of the assembled crowd as they mingled in the yard. The oldest family member present, Thomas Andrew ("Uncle Andy") Tyler, age 73, a first cousin of the Parrott siblings was photographed with the youngest family member there, Robert E. (Bobby) Parrott, age 8, the son of Dr. Crit. Also photographed were the oldest and youngest first cousins present (children of these siblings), Joseph B. Parrott of Zwolle and Robert E Parrott, of Natchitoches.
Of particular interest that day was the new 16mm hand-held movie camera, (an innovation in 1939), belonging to Fayette ("Pet") Gay, a close family friend of the Parrott siblings, used by Mr Gay to take "movie film" of the gathering as they moved about under the trees. For years the movie film of the reunion was a family curiosity. Following Fayette Gay's death, it mysteriously disappeared, or was destroyed.
A special reunion tradition and pilgrimage, later in the afternoon, was the trip "out" to the Parrott Cemetery and the site of the old Parrott house, which had been built in 1881, burned in 1915, rebuilt, and finally razed. They walked among the tombs, and pointed to the ring of cedar trees which once surrounded the house. They remembered that their mother had called the house "My Beautiful House."
On that day in 1939 in the course of the family reminiscing, they likely quoted the old adage of the three Parrott doctor brothers, "Life is uncertain and death is sure." But the Parrott siblings probably imagined they would enjoy other family reunions perhaps many others but they did not, for never again did the family gather in such a fashion. Within eleven months (in May 1940), Dr. Crit Parrott and Daisy McComic, and Ethel Toms Parrott (wife of Dr Reeze Parrott) all died within two weeks of each other. Hattie Stone died in Shreveport in 1944. Dr Reeze died in the fall of 1950, after a Zwolle practice of 43 years. Bettie Mason, relocated in Shreveport from California, died in 1964. And Mary Parrott Greer, whose accident had prevented her being present with the others in 1939, died in Shreveport in 1974, at the age of 91, the last of an interesting Sabine Family circle.

================================== Queen Mary + 365 = 61 Meeting while crossing Atlantic Ocean, Autumn Place couple marry in June 1958
February 13, 2020 by Michelle Hollenhead
The Rev. Robert "Bob" Parrott and Donna Parrott have been richly blessed during their lives, perhaps never more so than when they met crossing the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary in 1957.
Though their first meeting wasn't on Valentine's Day, the couple's romance aboard that ocean liner has made every day special since.
From the moment they met, "I knew there was something special about her," Bob said last week when the couple was interviewed in their cozy apartment in Farragut's Autumn Place senior community.
Bob, a Methodist minister from Louisiana, and Donna, a Snyder, Texas, school teacher, each were traveling with friends when they set sail on the deluxe ocean liner in June 1957, ready for a summer abroad.
"We each had been saving money and were on a tight budget," Donna said. The ship was traveling from Newport, Virginia, to Cherbourg, France, and the couple met in the dining room their first night at sea.
"I didn't go on the trip to find someone else, but I was certainly open to it," Bob said in a short but sweet You Tube film, "A Queen Mary Romance" the liner's parent company made about the couple in 2016.
"We were originally supposed to sail on the Queen Elizabeth, but at the last minute we were able to get on the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary had a name and a history ... it was the fulfillment of a dream," he added. "I was astounded by the size and the glamour … and I remember seeing Donna (that first night) and how she fit very well in the magic of the room. I can still see Donna in that lovely black dress.
"This was my dressy outfit, for the ship," Donna said. "It was a special dress for a special occasion \'97 I just didn't realize how special it was going to be." There was sadness on both sides when they parted, even though they had made plans to meet in Paris and Salzburg, Austria, before returning stateside. "But we were confident we were at the beginning of something, not the end," he said.
"It was as though we knew each other immediately," Donna added. "We just spoke the same language, from the very beginning, and had so much to talk about." The couple traveled separately back across the ocean, but made plans to drive to their respective homes together from the East Coast.
"By the time we returned to the states we knew sometime was happening here," Bob recalled. The distance mattered little, and the couple married in Dallas, Texas, on June 19, 1958, exactly one year to the day of that first shipboard meeting. "Counting our wedding day, it was only the 13th time we had seen each other," Donna said.
So began a long and vibrant marriage for the couple, who have been married for 61 years.
They came to Knox County in 1964 for Bob's job, and have been here since. While Bob \'97 who also is an author and genealogist \'97 took the helm at the Wesley Foundation on the University of Tennessee-Knoxville campus, becoming its longest-serving minister, Donna took some time away from teaching to raise the couple's children: son, Robert Crittington, nicknamed "Crit," and daughter, Leslie.
Donna ultimately returned to her career, and was an administrator with Knox County Schools, serving as principal at Rocky Hill, Oakwood, Pleasant Ridge and Sequoyah elementary schools before retiring in 1999. The couple also have four grandchildren. The Parrotts don't really see it as a "secret," the key ingredients of their marriage that have made it such a great and lasting partnership.
"From the very beginning we did not allow the idea to even be considered that marriage was not going to work for us," said Bob, who similarly has counseled many other young couples during his career. "We had rough times, but everybody has rough times. We respect each other, love each other and complement each other.
"It sounds like a fairy tale, but it is all very real," he added. "How they met and their lifelong love is so beautiful in a world where faithfulness and commitment seem to no longer be valued," said Crit, who also noted, "They are perfectly matched."
"Shipboard romances do last," Bob said. "Ours has lasted, and has flourished, since that day." "It has been a life that was truly meant to be," Donna added. "It was a chance encounter, but one that turned into something worthy of a lifetime together."
