  • There is a group of Parrotts primarily located in Missouri that trace back to Lt. Col. Elias Parrott. Elias' birth date and county of birth identify him almost certainly as a grandson of Joel Parrott of the Richard branch. Based on age and geography, James is the most likely father. However, this file is being kept separately pending more definitive data.

      Lieutenant-Colonel Elias Parrott
      Elias Parrott was born in Campbell County, East Tennessee, November 15, 1805. All the schooling that he received was in that county, and did not aggregate more than six months. His real education was gained in the great university of experience, where he acquired a varied and practical knowledge of men and things. He was brought up a farmer and teamster, in which latter occupation he took great delight. He followed these occupations in Tennessee for nearly twenty-five years.

      In 1824 he married Elizabeth, daughter of John McSpadden, a Tennessee farmer. Three of their children, Sarah, William F., and Susan B., were born in Tennessee; two others. John M., and Herber T. (sic, should be Hester F), were born in Indiana; to which state the family removed in 1830. Leaving Indiana in 1836 they came to Polk county, now Dallas, Missouri, where Margaret G., and Nancy J. were born. All the children are now living except William, who was murdered during the war. At the age of twenty-two Elias Parrott was elected captain of a militia company in Tennessee, and served as such for five years. In 1832, while living in Indiana, he served in the same capacity for four years. During his residence in Polk county, some four years, he served as constable two years, and was sergeant-major of a company of State militia.

      In the fall of 1840 he moved into Ray county; then, January, 1841, into Buchanan county, where his son Elias, was born, who was killed in the Federal service in Missouri, at the age of twenty-one. Here his wife died August 1, 1842. August 10, 1843, he married Louisa, daughter of Stewart McCord, a farmer of Clinton county. Of their four children, three are now living, all in DeKalb county; James K. Polk, Austin A, and Joseph H.

      In March, 1845, he moved to DeKalb county, and settled three miles northwest of Maysville, the county seat, which he assisted in laying out. The same month, March, 1845, he was elected judge of the county court of DeKalb county; was reelected in 1847½, for four years, and served out his full term. He was again elected for the two years term in 1859. From 1851 to 1855 he was deputy sheriff under Simeon Dalton. In October, 1861, he was elected lieutenant-colonel of the 6th Regiment "six month's" State militia, and served out his time. In august, 1862, he was elected captain of the "Enrolled militia," but being elected member of the state legislature, from DeKalb county, November, 1862, he was temporarily relieved from military duty. On the adjournment of the legislature, in the spring of 1863, he resumed command of his company, then stationed at Maysville, Missouri. He was almost immediately promoted to the lieutenant-colonelcy of the 81st Regiment State militia, popularly known as the "Paw-paw" militia. John Scott, of St. Joseph, colonel commanding, and did efficient service with his regiment in quelling the disturbances of that period. His last military service was as inspector-general upon the staff of General Craig, of St. Joseph, with the pay of his original rank as lieutenant-colonel. The war closing, he was permanently relieved from duty. About this time he was attacked with inflammatory rheumatism, from which he has suffered more or less ever since, and which finally caused his death - March 4, 1878.

      Elias Parrott was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with which he united in his youth. On the division of the denomination in 1844 into Methodist Episcopal Church (North), and Methodist Episcopal Church (South), he adhered to the Southern branch, of which he was, at the time of his death, an honored and consistent member. A loyal Democrat, by all the teachings and associations of his youth, he was strongly attached to the party, and was one of its warmest supporters. In 1846 he was initiated, passed and raised in the Masonic lodge at Savannah, Andrew county, the nearest Masonic body at that time; was active in the work of the order, and assisting in the institution of several lodges in different counties in the state, and was a deputy district grand master for several years, holding that office in various districts; exalted in Savannah Chapter Royal Arch Masons in 1847, and was at the time of his death, a member of Cameron Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, in Clinton county. Of late years he has resided in Osborn, though owning one of the finest farms in the county.

      After a two month's illness, Colonel Parrott died, March 4, 1878, of inflammatory rheumatism, at his residence in Osborn. He was buried with Masonic honors and accompanied to his last resting place by an immense concourse of friends and neighbors, in DeKalb county, of which he had been a constant resident for a little over thirty-three years. In all the relations of life, as husband, father, citizen, soldier, judge, in the church, in the state, in business and in social life, as well as in the ancient and honorable fraternity who bore him to his silent rest, in whose memories his virtues are engraven as upon a new white stone, in all, he has proved himself a man, and no more highly respected citizen has ever passed away from DeKalb county than Colonel Elias Parrott.

      9. James K. Polk Parrott (Elias1) was born calculated 15 Mar 1845 in Missouri and died on 28 Sep 1885 in Missouri, about age 40. {FGID: 134271478}

      Notes: The usual quiet of the little town of Osborn, some twenty four miles east of this city, was broken yesterday by the sudden death of one of the prominent citizens of the place, who, it seems, had become disgusted with life and taken a resolution to put an end to his existence, which he most successfully and easily accomplished. The victim of his own act was Judge James K. Parrott, a well-known and influential citizen, who for a number of years has resided at the edge of the city. The particulars, as learned from two well-known citizens of the place who were in the city last night, are subtantially as follows:

      Judge James K. Parrott as rested at that place for a number of years and has always been a promient citizen. For some time past he has been despondent, but still his friends have never anticipated any serious results. During this time he has become addicted to the use of ardent spirits, and this in part may have had a tendency to hurry the end. On June 19 he wrote a letter to Dr. S.T. Blair in which he expressed his determination of putting an end to his existence, but it seems something came between and prevented the consummation.

      On yesterday at about 10 o'clock he went into the barber shop of Sam Hoover, having with him a double-barreled shotgun and a lath with a notch cut in it close to one end. He expected, as is usually the case with a country barber shop, to find it empty, but on this occassion did not find it so. A small boy who was present got possession of the lath and carried it off. The judge then left the shop, first leaving a cartridge on the shelf along with the barber's utensils, and going from there to the carpenter shop, made a new stick with which to press the trigger of his gun. He then went to the law office of P.M. Hatch and walked into the lower office. Finding no one in, he went to one corner of the room, and placing the butt end of the gun in the corner of the room so wild not move, turned over a small box that was standing near and mounting on the top of it placed the muzzle of the gun to his left breast. He then took the stick, and catching the trigger with the notch, pushed the trigger. The gun was discharged, the contents piercing the breast near the center but a little to the left side, and tracing through the lower part of the heart. Without a groan the judge fell to the floor and expired instantly. hatch and several friends were in the office above, and looking down through a stove pipe hole saw the victim of his folly lying protrate on the floor. The ran down and picked him up, but the spark of life was extinct. The body was taken to his home and George Van Camp, a justice of the peace for that county, empanneled a jury and held an inquest returning a verdict that the deceased came to his death by his own hand. The affair created considerable excitement in the place as the deceased was very highly connected and had always stood high in the community. He was related to Cap. E.E. Truex and several other well known citizens of that place. He carried an insurance policy of $5,000 in the Mutual Masonic, of Chicago, and $1,000 in the Mutual Masonic of St Louis. He was a member of the the Methodist Episcopal church south, and also a prominent Mason. He will be buried from his home to-day by by the last named body. The decesased was 41 years of age and leaves a wife and four children. Financial difficulties it is supposed had a great deal to do with his act, as he was considerably in volved and had no present means of getting out. His family affairs had always been the best, his wife being nearly distracted by the sad occurrence. One of his relatives, Capt. E.E. Truex was in he city at the time, but left immediately on the receipt of a telegram announcing the sudden demise of the judge.
